Searching for poppy starts

Does anyone know where I can find poppy starts? I’m already growing red poppies and bought a white poppy start from Portland Nursery on Stark. Bonus question: Is it too late to plant poppy seeds?

Best material for leveling a bumpy clay lawn in Portland (Zone 8b)

I’m in Portland Zone 8b and trying to level a very uneven/bumpy lawn (~2500 sqft).

So far I’ve:

  • Removed weeds and roots
  • Aerated the lawn

Now I’m trying to figure out the best material to use for leveling.

Options I’m considering:

  • Premium garden blend (manure/compost/sand mix)
  • 3-way blend (mostly compost + sand - 3:2)
  • 3-way blend and more sand 50/50
  • Screened topsoil + mason sand (50/50)

I’ve read mixed opinions online. Some people say compost-heavy mixes are great for clay, but others say screened topsoil + sand levels smoother and is easier to work with.

My main goal is a very smooth/level lawn long term.

For people in Portland or similar clay soil areas:

  • What mix worked best for you?
  • Did you use compost, topsoil, sand, or a mix?
  • Any local places you recommend for bulk material?

Would appreciate any advice before I order a few yards of material.

Rose Checkermallow

Sidalcea asprella ssp. virgata aka rose checkermallow, native wildflower that I planted last fall is in bloom and I’m soooo in love. It’s a wonderful native substitute for foxgloves and non native hollyhocks. A host plant for the endangered Willamette Valley ‘Fendler’s Blue’ butterfly. Plant purchased from Symbiop garden center in SE Portland.

Other plants nearby, Spanish lavender, Mexican fleabane, Sphaeralcea ‘Newleaze Coral’.

Beets not growing. Peas doing well on same soil.

My beets after 74 days. Should I wait? Or mulch into ground and plant warm weather crops.

Due to a pretty big injury, I didn't really water and sometimes did some hydrolyzed fish. Raised bed dirt might have also been too compact (hard to dig in with hands).

How to use tiny garlic bulbs

Planted garlic for the first time last fall and I evidently planted it too late and/or didn’t water them enough. I harvested them today to make room for tomatoes and other summer plants, but the bulbs are very small. Any ideas on how to use them? Thanks!!

Seeking: Recs for ground cover on a steep slope.

Recently cleared dense blackberry and worried about soil integrity. It's a steep slope (40 degrees), and at the bottom is a 10 foot boulder retaining wall that borders the neighbors (very flat and manicured) lawn.

Seeking something fast growing, and not invasive obvs. Just put in a ton of work planting aroumd the house and would rather not cultivate something that will spit annoyance all over the newly worked gardens.

Plant/Weed ID?

Each time I do a Google search or a plant ID app it comes up with different answers, so throwing it out to real people! This plant has spread almost across my entire yard and a very short time span. Not sure if it’s a plant or considered a weed!

Tree growing IN my rose bush??

So, I didn’t really touch any of the landscaping when we moved in late fall. And I didn’t tend to the roses in time so I figured I would cut them back next time. But spring has sprung, and it appears a tree has also sprung right in the middle of this rosebush. Can anyone tell me what they think it might be? I’m not sure if I should cut the roses or cut the tree.

East Portland Plant Buying Club updates

Hey! It has been fun meeting folks from this group who have come by for the East Portland Plant Buying Club's open garden/popup plant sales this spring. I'm hosting another on Saturday, May 30, from 11 am to 2 pm. Location and further details here.

At noon, I will do a walk-and-talk around the yard, focusing on the rain gardens, carnivorous plant bog, and newly installed frog pond, as well as the various vertical gardening setups in the food gardens. I have been gardening here since 2001, and on this almost half-acre lot, there's a mature food forest in the front yard, native-filled woods, meadow, and rain gardens. There's a lot to see!

I sent my irregular newsletter out today. The big news: saffron bulbs are now open for pre-orders. Did you know you can grow this amazing spice in a pot?!? Subscribe here for updates on pop-up sales, open gardens, skill shares, and ever-changing seasonal plant and bulb sales.

Planting later in season suggestions

This is our 4th year planting our garden, but due to some unforseen life and medical circumstances, we're getting to planting a bit later than usual. Any suggestions for vegetables that are good to be started in June? This is at least a month later than we usually start planting, so figured I'd ask to see what people find grows well here with a later start time and maybe try something new. Thanks in advance!

Why does my rhubarb look like this?

Does anyone know why the rhubarb stems are horizontal and not supporting the leaves? My parents have had this rhubarb plant for a year or two outside and never harvested it.

Seeking: Tomatoe Supports. Bent, Mangled, Rusted Ok. Will pick up!

Just like the title says 😊 My friend got a bit enthusiastic with his planting this year, and also trying to avoid additional expense.

If there are spare cages hanging out on the side of your house, I'd be delighted to give them a loving home!!
