I Wanted an Ecologically Responsible Garden. It Was Harder Than I Thought.

I Wanted an Ecologically Responsible Garden. It Was Harder Than I Thought.

> In the summer of 2020, my husband, Ryan, and I bought a house in Portland, Ore., with a sizable backyard containing little more than a decrepit lawn. For many prospective homeowners, a crisped rectangle of grass on the verge of death would probably not be a selling point. We found it irresistible: an ideal canvas for our dream garden. That fall, we hired a contractor to rip out what remained of the lawn and got to work.

New Service for Portland Gardeners

Hello everyone!

My partner and I have been working on a platform for gardeners in Portland and the surrounding area to share their excess homegrown produce with the community. We call it The More You grow. Our goal is to create a service that improves food resiliency without relying on federal funding or donations. We officially launched last month and already have a couple hundred sign ups! You don't have to be a gardener to join, you just have to be fan of locally grown food. Check it out and let us know what you think!

Plant identification

Does anyone have any recommendations for good apps for plant identification? have a book that I love using for hikes but I need more. I have a large yard and I cannot tell the difference between invasive weeds and normal plants (not from PNW). I want accurate information.

Free Japanese Maple, Tigard

Just dug it up. We have a beautiful red one in the front, and that's well enough for us.

A gardening adjacent question

This mud nest appeared on my house a few days ago. It’s larger today and could fit in the palm of my hand. I’ve watched to see if anything comes or goes, so far I haven’t seen anything. However, there is a hole for that purpose.

Grape vines

A few months ago, someone was asking for cut grape vines for baskets, I think?? Anyway, I'm going to be trimming back my grapes, so please let me know if anybody is interested. They will go out with the yard debris on Tuesday.

This plant is truly the devil.

This is SOME of the root structure of a tiny Tree of Heaven sprout in my garden bed. That green sprout was all that was above ground. I didn’t even get to the “mother” rhizome. I was already 8 inches deep and disturbing the roots of surrounding plants so I gave up. I truly truly hate this thing. PLEASE if you have any establish ToH in your yard, as my neighbors do, treat them appropriately with herbicide.

Who's eating my beets?

I set rat traps pretty aggressively and two nights, no hits. 5 or 6 beets gone every night :(

No signs of vole tunnels. Could this be a cat or something else? Or is it just the most intelligent rat who has made it their life mission to damage me emotionally.

Any recs for Oregon native plants that do well in large pots outside ?

I have a large pot with no use for it. I would say it’s about 2x2 feet and 4 feet tall. I want to add in a perennial and/or evergreen native but don’t want to put anything in there that wouldn’t be happy. Thoughts? TIA!

Where are the bees?

There are so few this year. Is it the cooler weather? I have more flowers this year and decidedly less bees than the previous two seasons? Anyone else?

Cabbage worms, squash bugs, and aphids- what do I do?

2nd year of my garden and holy pests! I have BT for the cabbage worms, but have read that won’t do anything for aphids and squash bugs. Does jet streaming the aphids off really work? I’ve seen one lady beetle out there fighting the good fight.

My current plan of attack is wash the kale and brussel sprouts, then spray with BT. I’ve also got neem oil, but have since read it can harm bees. What else do you recommend doing? (Aphids and worms are on kale brussel sprouts, squash bugs are on squash)

Last year I had slugs and earwigs go after my tomatoes later in the season, so I assume that will happen again. Ah! Help

What’s happening to my azalea?

I’m assuming it’s a fungal infection? I sprayed once with a sulfur spray I have for my fruit trees but didn’t seem to do much

What’s up with Portland Nursery?

Barely 50% inventory at each location. Large sections of bare rock, lots of mostly bare tables. Asked if they had any more than the 2 homely little shrubs I was looking for and they said no, and they aren’t planning on ordering any further inventory.

Eggplant question

Did I plant these onions too close? I have plenty of blossoms but no fruit on both of these eggplants.

Are your zinnias blooming and Dahlias up yet?

I transplanted some zinnia starts, and put a few dahlia tubers in the ground in late may... And nothing has come up yet, zinnias still not blooming, and seem top heavy. I thought the seed pack said 35 days to bloom, so it seems off..

Anyone have horsetail they’d be willing to give me?

I use horsetail as sandpaper and I am almost out of my dried stock of it. I’d love to grow my own if there’s anyone that’s willing to divide some of theirs. I also have a prolific garden and could offer up a plant in return. Or perhaps to repair some broken pottery for you. Anyways, here’s hoping!
