The Scientist Who Revolutionized Sea Navigation

Matthew Fontaine Maury was born in 1806 in Virginia, USA, and joined the U.S. Navy as a young officer. A leg injury ended his career at sea, but it led him to devote his life to studying the oceans.

Maury collected and analyzed thousands of ships' logbooks, identifying patterns in ocean currents, winds, and weather. Using this data, he created the world's first scientific wind and current charts, allowing ships to choose faster and safer routes across the oceans.

His discoveries significantly reduced travel times, saving both time and money for sailors and merchants. In 1855, he published The Physical Geography of the Sea, widely regarded as the first modern textbook on oceanography.

Known as the "Pathfinder of the Seas," Maury helped transform navigation from guesswork into a science. His pioneering research laid the foundation for modern oceanography and influenced maritime navigation around the world for generations.

ISO old-fashioned rough-textured bath towels

Hard to find: cotton, not thick or soft, not waffle weave or linen. Surface loops are distinct, visible. Drying off with them feels like scrubbing, exfoliating, vigorous. I have some inherited from an ancestor; I think they were standard or at least more common back in the day.
Edit: is there a specific name for this type? Can anyone suggest a source?

Recommend a lawyer for will?

Please suggest a local lawyer to write a very simple will for me. I have an out-of-state will that could be revised for Washington law, or used as a model. Minimal assets, so hoping for reasonable cost.

Employee (or other) experiences at Natural Bridge Safari Park?

I recently graduated from college and am looking for jobs in the animal field (zoos, wildlife rehab, etc.) in Virginia. I noticed the Natural Bridge Safari Park is hiring for a lot of positions. However, I was kind of thrown off some things and am wondering if anyone has any experience working here. I was also was wondering how good the conditions the animals here are kept in. I appreciate any information!

Quote needed for this wisdom

I read somewhere that in every dysfunctional family, look to the person with no symptoms to find the source of the problems. Can any of the therapists out there boost its credibility with a citation? I’ve found it to be very accurate in my own family.

WTW for a not-athletic person?

What’s the opposite of “athlete”? Not critical or condescending; not physically impaired or fragile; just someone who doesn’t enjoy exercising or sports, and is not good at it.

Edit: Most of these are derogatory, so disqualified.
This normal person could be fine outdoors.

River tubing, Virginia/WV suggestions/options/personal favorite summer vacation. do tell

I want to take my boys (two 8 year olds) on a fun summer adventure/vacation. Originally we wanted to do KOA or Jellystone parks but we’ve waited too last minute & they are all booked up. I’ve decided to look into getting a small cabin or hotel with a pool. And going to caverns, river tubing, sight seeing etc. what are you favorite river tubing options & why? I’m also up for other suggestions, just a trying mom on a budget ✌🏼I’m in Hampton roads, looking to drive no more than 4.5 hours

WTW for “exercise in frustration”? Not “Hobson’s choice” but just a waste of time on what was once a valid pursuit or engagement?
