Fixing up my high school yeti. Need advice on drivetrain.

Hi,

I've got my old yeti cross country hardtail from high school that I want to put back on the road as a gravel cruiser, cross country, light mountain bike with the family.

The chain is skipping which I'm assuming is a good indication that my drive train needs some replacement. Its never been replaced as long as I've owned the bike (that I remember).

Right now its a 3x7, and I wanted to get some recommendations/advice on what I should replace.

From what I can tell is:

Option 1, replace with a new 3x7 system

Option 2, replace with a 1x9, 1x10, 1,x11, 1x12 system.

Once I figure that out, then I need to get parts.

My initial thought is to keep it simple and stick with the 3x7,

If I go that route, what I think I need(Prices in CAD):

  • Front chain rings I think its a black spire, which is now defunked (it is bolted so maybe I can replace the old rings, although I'm guessing its not worth it.) and crankset. - replace
    • FC-M361 $80
    • or FC-M311 $50
  • Front derailleur looks pretty beat up - replace
    • Shimano FD-M310 $25
  • Chain - replace -
    • Shimano CN-HG71? $40
  • Cassette - replace -
    • Shimano CS-HG200-7 (12-32T) $30 CAD
  • New cables - replace
  • I think the rear derailleur is newish - reuse
  • Thumb shifters are still ok as far as I know - reuse

Total cost - $175

These part picks are basically me chat GTPing and googling, I'm totally open to suggestions.

$175 bucks seems very reasonable to me, so if there are suggestions on slightly more $ options I'm open.

Thanks

Stuck on install - First linux bare metal install in a very long time.

Hi All,

Trying to install Ubuntu on a 4th Gen intel machine.
I've got a USB with Ventoy and ubuntu-26.04 iso image.

I can get to the install screen where it asks if I want to try/install Ubuntu, but after that I just get a screen with 4 dots that continually blinks.

Similar to the attached.

I'm not a Linux person, and wasn't sure where to start.

What kind of details can I add?

Thanks ,

Cleaning up old bike. How to best clean chrome

I've heard aluminum foil works? But I'm assuming there is a bit more of a professional approach.

I know this isn't the typical stuff you all work on but I thought this group would know best.

Thanks

Skateboard for 3 year old

My 3 year old tried skateboarding the other day and loved it.

Is getting a cheap board ( sports check ripzone or something ) gonna make it difficult to ride? Or just break sooner?

I want to make it easy to learn, but if she hates it in 3 months I'd rather not drop a bunch of money.

I don't skateboard, so I'm not educated on what's good or bad or needed.

Thanks

QNAP vs Synology for Hyper-V auto backup

I believe the only two (or maybe just the two most popular), NAS companies that offer built in/free software for backing up Hyper-V VM's are QNAP and Synology.

Just wanted to see if there was any reason to pick one or the other....See if this tracks:

QNAP Synology Do I care
Hardware price Winner (Bit cheaper) Don't think I need anything "fast" so doesn't make much of a difference. I'm just doing backups and no one will regularly be hitting this NAS hard
Software easy of use Winner Yup, I don't want to be mucking around if I don't have to. Time is money
Software flexibility Winner (more custom settings) Probably not...I think what I'm trying to do is pretty easy
Software/hardware reliability ? ? I don't care if lasts 7 years vs 8, but I need it work properly until that day.
Security QNAP has had some bad issues a few years ago, maybe that is resolved. Maybe it made them try harder? Winner? Yup. However network security will be good, and I'll have other backups
Hard drives Winner (Use )anyones They want you to use their brand Nice to have options, but if I have to pay a bit more for a good experience so be it.
Support Winner (Real people on the phone) Chat on the website If I need help, I want to talk to someone on the phone that knows their stuff.

I'm 50/50, sort of leaning towards Synology because I've heard nothing but good things about the software (stability, security, and easy of use)

Any thoughts?
Thanks

Is Synology the only brand with built in hyper-v backup?

I've been poking around today looking at NAS brands.

Is Synology the only brand that has BUILT IN backup for Hyper-V (with their active back up for business?)

Seems like everyone else relies on 3rd party software like veeam.

Thanks

Help setting up Mirrored volumes in windows 11.

New build (Not for gaming).

This has 4x NVME drives, 2x 1TB, 2x2TB

Installed windows and mirrored the 2xTB drives no problem

However, I can only Mirror the partition on my OS drive, so it ends up looking like this:

Disk 1 - 200MB EFI system partition, 930GB C:, 802MB Recovery Partition
Disk2 - C: 930GB, 1005MB unallocated

How it stands it looks like the computer is going to boot off of Disk 1, windows will Mirror the data on the C drive.
However if Disk 1 fails I won't be able to boot.

Should I mirror from the MB bios or use a 3rd party? Or is there a way to accomplish a disk mirror with windows Disk Management I don't know about?
