Gilt yields at 6% now. What are they, what's the risk and how do i buy

so apparently 30 year gilts are now as high as 1998. What does that mean? Should i be getting one on top of S&S ISA / Cash ISA? Cash ISAs are like 5% ish now.

I have no idea what they are, where you can buy them and what the positive / negative risks are?

If its such a big deal why are people buying them up for so much money?

Very stupid when it comes to this, i have looked online for answers and it confuses me more so apologies.

I probably need the explain like im five version.

Thanks.

When is the best time to buy an EV around 10-12k?

Ive been looking at prices all summer but decent quality evs that used to be around 10k have shot up to 13 and 15k. These are like 2020-2022 models.

Im sure with the oil crisis and general uptake of evs on the up, this might force prices up but if there is genuinely a good time to buy I'll wait for that as I have no rush. 10k mark on some evs is basically ex uber/taxis and don't see the point getting them.

Thanks.

Charging tariffs, 3p per mile 2028, and balancing this out with no home charging to beat ICE maintenance and fuel costs, how do you do it?

Mods - my post is directed at EV charging and impacts of future tax rises for EVs. Hopefully right sub-reddit for this.

Looking to get either tesla model 3 or Eniro (2021 era is cheapest right now).

  • EV rates in my area using co charger is approx 35p kwh
  • Eniro - 39p kwh using a tesla super charger (with the annual tesla membership charge)
  • Tesla - approx 21-29p kwh

So as we know, from 2028 the 3p per mile comes in on top of whatever the VED rate will be, i think its like £200 now.

How do people without home chargers keep costs low and beat ICE? Is there a technique, a subscription model or reliance on co chargers?

I want to get my first EV, undecided as i have no home charger what is cheaper/easier to charge - TESLA or E-niro and trying to future proof for long term to avoid having to go back to ICE (which i dont want to ever do if possible).

Thanks.

Is there some website or mathematical calculation to compare ICE MPG vs equivalent EV MPG?

Of course this will also be dependent on the price of fuel/charge kwh.

Hoping there is a website out there that you can put your current ICE/current electricity price and then you desired EV and price of electricity both public/private in your area and apply mpg/kwh ratio to it based on the cars.

If there isnt such thing, maybe a gap in the market???

Top 5 sandiest/finest beaches in England and Wales

What are the sandiest beaches in these parts of the UK? What i mean is like finest grain white sand, not pebbly, muddy/brown wet mess! I wanted to rank them by most sandiest to least sandiest.

I tried a few AI tools/online web searches but its very randomized and highly subjective.

Hoping someone who has been to a lot of beaches could do a ranking i.e top 5.

A bonus would be to ensure that these beaches have good water quality for swimming!

I'm planning to go to the best upvoted group before the weather changes, then the others upvoted ones later - maybe next summer!

I have already been to:

  • camber sands
  • west wittering
  • weymouth
  • holkham

Of course if you think they are part of the top 5 then please include them, i'll just go back (hehe)!

Avoiding Scotland (i have seen some stunners) but the weather/temperatures are just unpredictable and its far!!

Thanks.

Lidl Gold Teabags - downgrade or placebo?

Must have been at least 6 months since i last bought gold teabags. I noticed that they've changed the bags from rounded (covered in gold/silver foil) to double square.

It feels like each bag also contains a lot less tea - the type of bags used for more premium specialist teas are being used now e.g. their deluxe range style. I have to put two bags in to get about 1/4 more strength of an original rounded bag.

Anyone feel the same like its changed or is it just me?

As photographers, what is your workflow for shoot and store?

Since i started photography, i was taught that every time i go out on a shoot at the end of the day (or whenever practicable) was to take the SD card out and load-up lightroom, use lightroom to put it straight onto a storage device save it as a catalog, then back it up and finally afterwards format the SD card in-camera and go out again.

From the start of this year, i dont know what it is - likely laziness, i am just going on multi trips, maybe spread out a few days over a month or every other day and im using the one SD card and then after a month or three, then stopping to transfer photos to storage. My current setup is 3 External HDD's of equal size > backup to them by plugging them in manually > safely remove > repeat for each HDD.

  • Is this a habit i should break out of?
  • Has it worked for you like this? e.g no corrupted SD card issue for long shoots over a long period of time without reformatting? N.B - I use the same camera.
  • What is your own workflow from shooting to store? e.g. like my setup, using a NAS? Storing to SSDs?

Q930F - owners question on volume levels?

Are there any Q930F or Q990f owners out there that can help? This is my first surround soundbar at this level.

I am a bit lost when it comes to finding out correct audio levels.

For most playback e.g. Stereo PCM, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Atmos, DTS HD (havent seen other formats appear) the min audio level i need to set is 40 to feel like its working correctly.

  • 16-20 feels like regular tv volume
  • 30 = tv volume cranked up like 50%
  • 40-59 surround level
  • 60+ too loud

I have posted on forums and elsewhere but people keep telling me that about 18 is crazy high and anymore than that and its crazy loud, but i am not experiencing that despite different playback formats.

Stereo PCM/Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby Atmos gives the loudest volume, Dolby Atmos seems to give a better range between quiet and loud. DTS HD feels weak and quiet in comparison, there i need to push over 40 to hear between dialogue and loud explosions and range in-between.

To explain my setup - i am using a Nvidia ShieldTV Pro and passthrough streaming via Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and have a handful of remux discs i have copied over and saved into my HDD and running via Plex. My lounge is about 40-50 sqm.

I have checked firmware is all up to date and i am running surround speaker mode with audio balance set to 0. Shifting them doesn't seem to do much, except for boosting the subwoofer levels up.

Thanks.

Tips on using Pro mode?

Hi All,

I've been to places where i dont pack my mirrorless kit. I tried using pro mode but i keep having problems with the touch screen interface.

I want to quickly change lenses/zoom but the lens options get muddled with the sliders. Ditto sliders dont appear straight away. Sometimes the sliders keep moving on the screen so its slowing me down to adjust shutter speed.

I am having a real challenge in quickly adjusting things.

Ideally i would like to have a button press to change the lens and maybe something else that i can adjust shutter speed. I can keep iso auto but a hot switch button btwn iso and shutter would be good.

Really need some tips please. I have lost some good shots because i was spending too much time faffing and i dont really like the standard camera settings, prefer to have raw.

Thanks.

Discussion - Total War + Anno + Mount and Blade + Europa Universalis = Video Game Heaven?

If any devs are reading the subreddit. I know AAA gaming has been struggling recently. My grand plan... if money was no object...

A video game that includes the mechanics of all those games combined (plus a few e.g. KCD, Blade & Sourcery for VR. You can pick timeline throughout history and just enjoy yourself and get immersed. I keep dreaming but i hope one day....

Only comparable that comes to my head are non related, such as ARMA (game persistence), Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 (world is your oyster) and those old Novalogic titles based off Delta Force Black Hawk Down / Joint Operations Typhoon Rising. Or a persistent world such as No Mans Sky (map never ends/procedural generation).

That kind of massive open world, where you can play things at the high level, rts level, micro level, all the way down to RPG level where you can stick your face into the ground and see every fine grain of mud/sand/water with path tracing like cyberpunk etc.

AI may give an opportunity to ease burdens on devs so this can be achievable.

The question is, is it achievable? In my lifetime? I think and hope so, yes.
