Popped a string almost immediately. What did I do wrong?

Beginner here, just had my first lesson with my first instrument. My teacher tuned the violin and when I went to practice it sounded a little off (probably just me…) so I downloaded a tuning app and one of my strings was a little off. The app said tune higher so I turned it tight (my mistake?) and the string broke. I swear I put the smallest amount of pressure on it, I could not have turned the nut more than 5 degrees. My previous experience tuning instruments is on guitar.

Thank you for your inputs.

Appalachian but moved to Puerto Rico, just started violin lessons. Any tips?

I have just started taking violin lessons (just had lesson 1, going to buy an instrument this weekend) because I want to learn fiddle and that seems like the best way to start giving where I live.

Does anyone have any advice?

Seasoned rice vinegar will make all of your rice + protein meals better

I throw my rice in a rice cooker without salt and once it’s done I toss it with seasoned rice vinegar. Delicious.

Just wanted to do a little PSA because I don’t see people using it much.

Also quick pickled cucumbers with the rice vinegar makes a nice accoutrement to the rice + protein.

Quick Pickled Cucumbers: To a medium bowl, combine ⅓ cup rice vinegar, ⅓ cup warm water, 1-2 teaspoons cane sugar, and ½ teaspoon fine salt. Stir well to dissolve the sugar and salt. Slice 1 small (or ½ of a large) English cucumber into very very thin slices (a mandolin works well for this). Add the sliced cucumber to the vinegar mixture and set aside to marinate for 15 minutes. These can also be made up to 2 days ahead and marinated in the refrigerator. Drain well before serving. (Source: https://therealfooddietitians.com/air-fryer-salmon-bites/#tasty-recipes-67905)

Severe water issues in my area- 48 hour rationing in place for foreseeable future

For the foreseeable future, the metro area of San Juan, Puerto Rico will be split into two zones. Each zone will have two days of water and two days without water on a rotating schedule for the foreseeable future. The calendar they put out details the next month. This has been an ongoing issue, I have friends who haven’t had water a majority of the time since Feb/March. That was mostly an infrastructure issue, but now the reservoir is low due to a drought, caused by the El Niño.

I live close by but my water is fed by a different source. We don’t have the same infrastructure/water leakage issues( as far as I know) that San Juan has but it could be coming for us as well. I have a 400 gallon cistern but it’s not hooked up to my house and it’s in a place that’s easily accessible to the street (we do live in a gated neighborhood though). There’s one place I might could move it to that would make it less accessible, it’s just in the dog fence which isn’t ideal.

What would you be doing to prepare that maybe I haven’t thought about?

New to video games, very sad and looking for something to distract me

Hi all,

My family is in chaos and I spent all last night crying. My partner is gone for several weeks and I just need something, even just for today, to get my mind off of things. I recently acquired a Nintendo Switch and played The Last Campfire, and I liked the simple but puzzle based game play and narrative. I have been playing animal crossing, but the lack of a narrative at this point in the game is not distracting or holding my attention enough. The only other proper video game I have ever played was Super Paper Mario on the Wii when I was a kid probably 18+ years ago, which I really liked. Outside of video games, I like puzzles. I like board games too but I don’t think I want anything competitive right now. I don’t want to win anything.

Do you have any recommendations for me? Just having a really tough time.

Thank you

19-29 years old salary progression, LCOL areas

I definitely had some underreported income in 2016-2019 with cash tips, but not enough to meaningfully change this too much. Graduated college in 2019 and had my lodging covered through loans until 2018. All other expenses paid by me.

Approaching 30 with 40k in retirement, 25k in emergency fund, and I bought a house last year with my partner. Very little financial family support throughout these years. Hoping for a promotion this year, I work in a nonprofit.

Assumed straight at a pride function by an “ally” and irrationally upset about it

Steak and potatoes.

I went to this professional pride event during a conference so there were a ton of people in my industry there. I started chatting with this man and told him I was getting married in a few weeks and he asked me a question about my “soon to be husband”.

I’m surprised about how upset I am about it. People assume I’m straight every day, all day. I correct them about half the time, the other half of the time I just roll with it. At big conferences like these, you’re talking to strangers all day long and sharing small tidbits about your life. I just thought that at an event specifically for queer people I would get to relax a bit and not come out for the 100th time that day.

I’m sure I’m only upset about this because there are like 500 other things I should actually be upset about, the conference went terrible, my job is in absolute fucking chaos. For some reason I’m kind of relaxed about those things but I can’t get this man assuming I’m straight while we are both sitting at an event for the queer community out of my head. Is it that hard to use the word partner? Why did he even come?

I did correct him nicely, but I’m absolutely sure he didn’t go home and think about how he was corrected. God, I’m making a mountain out of a molehill. Idk why I can’t let it go. Probably because if I don’t focus on this, l’ll be upset about things that actually matter and I can’t afford to be anything other than absolutely relaxed about the chaos around me.

Happy pride yall.

Edit: wow, upvote ratio of 59%. Shoutout to the mods, I’m sorry I created more work for you with this comment section. I know not everyone loves gay people but I didn’t think sharing my feelings would cause this much discord, especially since I have never, ever, treated anyone unkindly for assuming I’m straight even when I have a rainbow flag in my drink. All I’m asking for is for people not to assume I’m straight when I’m at a queer event, I don’t think that’s a lot to ask. If this triggered you and you think that you don’t have a problem with gay people, I ask you to interrogate that within yourself a bit more.
