[OC] US chess ratings and membership by state

This visualizes rated tournament chess participation in the United States using data from the US Chess Federation. USCF is the main national organization for over-the-board rated chess tournaments in the U.S.

I looked at active USCF members, regular chess ratings, median rating by state, rating distributions, and participation adjusted for population.

A few notes:

  • Data is updated monthly
  • The U.S. has 102,927 active USCF members in this snapshot.
  • 83,290 players have regular ratings.
  • The national median regular rating is 838.
  • Texas has the most active USCF members, followed by California and New York.
  • Massachusetts has the highest median regular rating among states in this snapshot.

Population adjustment: based on 2025 estimated resident population.

Interactive version: https://chess67.com/uscf/stats/all

I made this because I was curious how organized tournament chess participation differs across states, both in raw member count and relative to population.

Feedback welcome!

I analyzed USCF data and made some visualizations of ratings, active players, and state-by-state participation

I analyzed USCF data and made some visualizations around active members, ratings, state-by-state participation, rating distributions, and population-adjusted chess activity.

A few things I found interesting:

  • Texas has the most active USCF members, ahead of California and New York.
  • Some states have much higher USCF participation relative to population than I expected.
  • Median regular rating varies a lot by state.

I mostly made this because I was curious what the USCF landscape looks like outside of individual tournaments and rating lists.

Here’s the page: https://chess67.com/uscf/stats/all

You can also search for a player name and see how their rank within the state changes over time.

Feedback appreciated!
