Dream Air + SBoy: VR video player pauses when my head doesn't move

I'm trying to watch a movie using Skybox VR video player but the video pauses after about 10 seconds of my head not moving.

It resumes as soon as I move my head.

Is there a way to stop this so I can watch a movie all the way through?

I've checked the sboy settings and stationary dimming is disabled. In steam VR "Pause VR when headset is idle" is off.

Resident Evil 9 VR performance issues

I'm struggling to get smooth performance in Resident Evil 9 VR on the Dream Air. I appear to be getting unexplained spikes despite my CPU or GPU being maxed out. I have a 4090 and a 13700k.

I'm fairly certain I should be able to run this smoothly. Resolution is at 80%, although even bringing it down to 40% I still get the spikes and stutter.

Same problem with sboy and Pimax native.

I have asked around and have yet to find someone suffering from the same problem so I thought I'd ask here to see if the problem is specific to Pimax headsets.

I've disabled eye tracking. I'm using the latest RE Framework AFW nightly and VR mod, the latest nvidia driver.

It's end of July - still no sign of the new face gasket and strap for the Dream Air?

I'm patiently waiting for the final face gasket and strap for the Dream Air - putting up with the discomfort of this headset.

We were told it would likely ship end of July but that ship's about to sail.

Can we get an update on this please Pimax. Some of us don't want to fork out hundreds of dollars more on comfort kits while we still haven't received the final headset we were promised.

Really hope it will be shipping soon 🙏

H shifter bug still not fixed??

I just booted up the game for the first time in months.

Last time I played, I couldn't use the H shifter because there was a bug that caused the shifter to stay stuck in neutral.

This was quite a few versions ago, so I was really surprised when I booted up the game and found that the problem still hasn't been fixed?

I would have thought getting an H shifter to switch gears normally would be an easy fix.

Are people really still not able to use H shifters in this game?

EDIT: based on the comments, it sounds like the question should have been: Are they planning to add support for H shifters without a clutch?

Luke Ross mods crash during startup when using sboy driver

I've tried a number of Luke Ross mods on my Dream Air using the sboy driver and they all crash on startup.

No issues using the Pimax runtime though.

Does anyone know what the issue might be?

EDIT: As suggested by Sboy below, the solution was to set PreferredAPI2=2 and RenderMode2=2 in the RealVR.ini config.

Sboy with Pimax Evo - looking for clarity on how things work

I was away on holiday for a few weeks, so I've only just started messing with the new EVO software and have a couple of questions.

First, to get Sboy working, is the process:

- Open Pimax EVO

- Make sure Steam is selected as the runtime

- Enable Open Port

- Load the Sboy driver

- Click Launch

- Start SteamVR

I couldn't see any indication of whether Sboy or EVO was actually being used. If the above is correct, hopefully it can be streamlined in the future to a single click after setting it up for the first time.

Also, when using Sboy, do the SteamVR settings still do anything, or should we only be tweaking settings in EVO? Or is it the other way around?

EDIT: Thanks for the replies. I have one more question - is it possible to enable eye tracking with sboy and if so, how?

Eye tracking calibration not working

I tried calibrating the eye tracking today on my Dream Air multiple times.

It didn't matter how many times I did it, it just doesn't register where I'm looking. The dots light up inaccurately when I look around.

Anyone else have this issue ?

Forza 6 VR mod - need help setting this up

I've been trying out the VR mod for Forza 6 and I'm not getting very good results.

First of all, in-game, everything is very dark in the headset to the point that I can barely see where I'm going. It's as if some of the shaders aren't loading in VR or something. Also the menu Sat Nav etc. seem to be out of view.

Could someone give setup advice on what the best settings are? both for the mod and the in-game settings. I read you shouldn't use DLSS - why? it seems to work and setting it to anything above DLSS Ultra Perfomance causes judder

My current Mod settings (ticked):
AFR, fxaa, force minimize game, reprojection: mid, sync FPS

3372 x 2828 resolution
Pimax Dream Air. 90hz. RTX 4090.

Dream Air - max volume is too low?

I haven't heard anyone discuss this and I'm quite surprised. I wonder if it's just my unit.

The audio on this headset sounds surprisingly good to me - it honestly sound on par with the G2. Maybe it doesn't have quite as much bass - I haven't really noticed to be honest, but the spatial sound is really good - even better than on the G2.

That said, the volume is really low, even with my computer's volume maxed out. With a fan on next to me I can barely hear anything and it breaks the immersion because you never feel like you are quite fully in the game.

Is it low for everyone? is there a way to make it louder?

Dream Air review

I got my Dream Air yesterday and have now tested it in about a dozen games, so I thought I’d share some thoughts.

Initially I spent hours troubleshooting because I couldn’t get the basestation to sync with the headset. I only have one basestation for now. I made a thread about it yesterday but it’s since been deleted.

This actually wasn’t Pimax’s fault. I’d tried multiple basestation positions and moving around the room - nothing worked until SBoy commented saying that with v1 basestations you need to stand at least 3 metres away and wave the headset around. My office is tiny so I had to stand out in the corridor. Surprisingly, that immediately fixed it.

Pimax support were pretty helpful despite not figuring out what the issue was - they tried. They responded immediately in chat and spent about an hour troubleshooting with me before getting me to open a ticket. I was told the current wait time is one to two days. It would probably help if support notes mentioned that with v1 basestations users need to stand further away and wave the headset around to get initial sync working. Only having one basestation probably made things worse though.

My first impressions of the headset were really bad because all I had was an unusable headset sitting in front of me, which gave me plenty of time to inspect it properly. The build quality and design are just bad. There’s no sugar coating it.

It looks and feels like a $100-$200 device. The plastic feels cheap and the design is really poorly thought out. The lack of a hinge where the strap connects to the headset is baffling. The headset sits at a rigid 90-degree angle with no flex, so the top digs into your forehead instead of adapting to your head shape. It’s really uncomfortable.

It’s also uncomfortable when resting it on top of your head between games because the plastic optical stack housing digs straight into your forehead. Whether you’re wearing it properly or just balancing it on top of your head while setting up the next game, it’s always uncomfortable and makes you want to take it off entirely.

More worrying is how flimsy it feels. Without a hinge it feels inevitable that something will eventually crack or snap, and we’re already seeing reports of related issues. Then there’s the double cable setup, which gets in the way when putting the headset on or taking it off. The junction box sitting on your neck also gets a bit warm. That hasn’t bothered me as much as I expected.

The facial interface is awful. The material is hard and inflexible, there’s light leakage everywhere, and all the pressure sits on your forehead. Combined with the lack of hinge movement it kills immersion because you’re always aware that you’re wearing an uncomfortable headset that doesn’t fit or sit properly. It defeats the whole point of the small form factor. I have a very average / normal face shape that usually fits all VR headsets comfortably.

I know a new facial mask will be shipping out soon, but I'm not filled with confidence that it will be a big improvement as it has kept the hard leather which is bound to not adapt to many face shapes and cause uncomfortable pressure points. Again, every reviewer has mentioned they are not a fan of the hard leather. None of the most comfortable headsets have this, so why stick with it?

Honestly, how these issues made it through to production is beyond me. This doesn’t feel like a finished consumer product. It feels like a pre-production alpha headset. It feels like Pimax spent 99% of their effort on the optics, realised they were massively behind schedule, and shoved the headset out the door unfinished.

Which is a huge shame because visually this thing is incredible.

Back in 2016 when I first got the Rift, I remember thinking “this is amazing, but I can’t wait until VR looks as good as my monitor”. This is finally that headset - actually it looks better than my monitor.

I’ve used the G2 since launch and loved it, but even then there were always compromises: screen door effect, tiny sweet spot, LCD blacks, washed out colours. The Dream Air is the first headset where I genuinely feel like there are no more visual compromises.

The image quality is perfect. No visible screen door, edge-to-edge clarity, vivid natural colours, deep blacks. It just looks beautiful.

The horizontal FOV is also slightly wider than the G2, which is a nice surprise because I expected it to be the same.

I did notice glare in some scenes, but honestly 90% of it was caused by the terrible facial interface letting light in. The actual lens glare was minimal. I also saw the orange edge tint people mentioned, but only in one scene when deliberately looking into the far edges of the lenses unnaturally. In normal use I never noticed it, even when I went looking for it.

At this point those complaints feel like tiny nitpicks anyway. They are irrelevant. This looks better than my 3440x1440 Mini LED monitor. For the first time, I’d genuinely be happy with this level of VR visual quality for the rest of my life.

The audio was also a pleasant surprise. It sounded much fuller than I expected and positional audio was decent. The only issue is that max volume feels too low, which hurts immersion a bit. Maybe there’s a way to boost it.

Most of my testing was with UEVR since my controllers haven’t arrived yet. I’ve been running everything at full resolution, 72Hz, motion smoothing enabled using the SBoy driver. Surprisingly, motion smoothing is actually usable here. On the G2 I found it unbearable, but on this headset it’s playable. There’s still some shimmer but it’s nowhere near as distracting. I still need to test 90Hz. For reference, I’m running a 4090 and a 13700K.

None of the Luke Ross games worked for me though. They all crashed even after reinstalling with OpenVR. Star Wars Squadrons was also strange because it caused major eye strain whenever looking outside the cockpit, almost like the IPD was completely wrong. Not sure what’s happening there. (EDIT: a comment below helped me resolve this)

So overall: amazing visuals trapped inside a horrible shell. I love it and hate it simultaneously.

This headset should have shipped with the hard strap included by default. At this price point the build quality and comfort are frankly unacceptable and us pre-alpha testers really should not have to fork out full-price to get the standard hard strap.

I genuinely cannot stress enough how uncomfortable this headset is in its current form and how poorly thought out the design is. It should not have released like this. I also shouldn’t have to dish out more cash just to make an already expensive headset comfortable enough to use.

I might add more thoughts about it as they come.

Edit / further thoughts:

- I notice slight motion smudge/blur when turning my head in 75hz mode without motion smoothing. I still haven't tried 90hz so this might be improved at a higher refresh rate. Not a problem though - I'm trying to nit-pick here.

- If you leave the headset plugged in, even if the computer is off, it stays warm. I suppose this means it doesn't switch off unless you unplug it? That's not great

- I can't seem to run eye calibration without VR controllers. It expects you to press A to start the calibration process and pressing A an X-Box controller does nothing. Running eye calibration should not require a VR controller. Hopefully they can fix this

- Cutting the plastic stems on the top of the face gasket, as someone suggested in the comments, does help relieve the worst of the pressure from the forehead. Still not comfortable though.

- Moving the steam render resolution slider down from 150% (default) to 80% still looks surprisingly good. That's around the G2 resolution and it looks way better.

Received my Dream Air - yep, it doesn't work

I've had the Reverb G2 since launch and it's been a super reliable headset.
This is my first Pimax headset. Pretty much every time Pimax announced a new headset I nearly pulled the trigger. I even pre-ordered one once, then cancelled at the last moment because of the disastrous quality control, Pimax being Pimax, and the way they handled things.

On paper, the Dream Air is everything I want from a VR headset. I told myself I had to at least give it a shot and that the odds of getting a bad device were probably lower than they looked online.

I've now spent 4 hours trying to get this thing working and I've decided to give up for today. Pimax Play doesn't recognise the Base Station properly - it just flashes in the interface with a "Not tracking" message.

I tried the SBoy driver and, with that at least, SteamVR recognises the Base Station. But the headset just says "Put on your headset to wake VR" and nothing I do actually wakes it up.

Pimax support helped for about an hour before telling me to open a support ticket. They said it'll take one or two days for someone to get back to me - presumably because they're inundated with issues from the latest wave of Dream Air shipments.

The build quality of this thing is shocking. I'm quite worried about how long it'll last. From the outside it looks and feels like a $100-$200 device. The decision to have no hinge at all where the strap connects to the headset, the awful face gasket, and the double-cable layout has me shaking my head in disbelief. I know a new backstrap is being sent out, but that's the least of my concerns.

The biggest issue with the cable design for me is how much of an inconvenience it is when taking the headset on and off. The whole thing feels like a pre-production testing unit rather than a finished consumer product.

I'll give a full review once I've actually managed to get the thing working - or not. Hopefully these negative first impressions will improve.

How do you transfer a sim to esim from IPhone 5 to IPhone 16e?

A client of mine wants me to help transfer her physical iPhone 5 SIM to her new iPhone 16e. I'm not really an Apple guy, but she seems to think the iPhone 5 doesn't support the eSIM transfer feature due to being on iOS 15.8.7.

I haven't gone over there yet to sort it out, but I wanted to make sure I understand the solution before I do. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Any Plans to Change the Dream Air’s Two-Cable Splitter Box to a Single Cable?

Are all the Dream Airs still shipping with the two cables and the splitter box at the back?

I haven’t heard Pimax say anything about this, but pretty much every single person who’s tested the Dream Air so far has had the same reaction which boils down to: “WTF Pimax!”

I’m quite concerned about having a heated splitter box sitting against the back of my neck. It seems absurd that anyone thought this was a good idea. But I digress - my question is whether they’re planning on doing anything about it?

On a positive note, I imagine it works well with those pully systems.
