Making my own Pike & Shot wargame with communication delay

Hi there!

I’ve had a long-time dream of building my own strategy game, like for 20 years now, so come what may, about a month ago I just started taking action.

A friend of mine, whom I was trying to invite as a programmer, showed me how to use Cursor and then disappeared, so I have to do everything by myself :)

I’m a professional game designer, and I've been making games for almost 20 years (best known for farm games 😆). But at the very beginning, I was setting up the balance for the “Fire and Sword” mod for RTW, and later participated in what became Mount & Blade: With Fire & Sword as a Rebalancer.

===
Key pillars:
- Communication delay (orders take time to arrive)
- Incomplete information (hidden unit stats and unreliable reports)
- Operational level
- Full symmetry (same rules for everyone)
- Personality-based AI
- Pike and shot setting

In the pictures, I just want to show my progress. I spent three days learning how to create maps from images (and recognizing them as a graph - the key step), and another 3 days on the pathfinding algorithm (HPA* / Flood fill, as seen in the picture 3).

Today, I'm going to fix signal propagation and synchronization, and then dig into the movement rules.

Happy to answer your questions!
Does anyone still care about this direction nowadays? What features would you want to see here?

Are there Wargames with successive stages?

For example, (Maybe similar to Star Wars Armada) a space battle where you have an attacker trying to punch holes in the defense around a planet and escort some drop ships down to the surface with infantry and support. Then depending on that phases success or failure you proceed to the ground battle with large armies (or small hero type wargaming, bolt action, etc) where you battle with numbers and support depending on the previous stage. Maybe other phase/stages with small skirmishes and various objectives in the campaign (Operation Deadstick esque before D-day) that affects the battles.

TLDR - campaign wargames that blend/swap between mediums and rulesets

How many skirmish/tabletop wargames are out there? I started counting (249 so far) and built a whole website around it

Hello everyone. I've been building a wargaming catalogue in my spare time and wanted to share it: https://www.wargamesdb.com/

Over the past year I kept noticing new skirmish and tabletop games every month, and I started wondering how many were actually out there. For something I used to think of as niche, there's a lot more than meets the eye 😅

There are currently 249 games in the catalogue (432 if you include editions and expansions). Scope is still evolving. Right now it covers solo skirmish through large-scale battles. I'm debating whether dungeon crawlers belong. Curious what you think?

I didn't want it to be just a 'simple' games catalogue. I structured it as Universe → Games → Factions → Warbands, so related games sit together and faction-level detail has a home. With better data, better features can be built. For example, reviews and personal game lists can tag the factions/warbands you actually play, not just the game itself.

This is a hobby side project and it's in Beta. New games keep appearing, so the plan has always been community contributions: you can suggest or edit entries, and everything goes through a human review before it's published. I've learned a lot digging into the hobby's history along the way. The obvious reason for the 'Beta' is that i fully acknowledge there are big data gaps, inconsistencies and even likely some errors. Also expect a bug or two :D I do however aim to keep working on this, it's been quite a lot of fun and a great learning experience.

I'd love feedback (sushi style cold & raw!): especially games missing, bad categorisation, feature request etc.. If you're interested in the project, please drop by Discord!

Thanks. Hope some of you find it useful.

US versus Soviets 1000 point game

We tried a surrounded style of scenario. 22 soviet and 16 US order dice.
US placed 8 units within 12’ of the centre with two spotters elsewhere on the map. The soviet player got a pre-bombardment and took out a spotter and pinned everything else. Then the soviet player picked a long table edge ,
. The 8 US units dice in the middle and half the soviet dice [11] were put in a bag and we started a meeting engagement , the remaining dice [11 for soviets and 8 for US were held in reserve from turn two]
The crafty US player had deployed recce transports and M8 greyhound in the centre which all eventually scurried off to hide but the poor I&R squad remained in some ruins to create an irritating speed bump .
The US player had to bring on units carefully as the soviet firepower and ability to do massive pins was scary.

The game started to escalate during turn three when a soviet armoured car raced forward and fired and triggered the M8 greyhound Recce. An antitank rifle that had failed getting on earlier decided to arrive hitting the M8 on the side then penetrated and took it out.

The brave US I&R unit which had been an annoying pain sitting in ruins and down all game finally got taken out with overwhelming firepower.

US m8 scott got sniped by an AT rifle but shook it off and returned the favour by wiping them out wit HMG and light howitzer combined.

The same US M8 scott tank moved to point blank of the remaining Soviet armoured car and took it out.

Amazingly late game the zis-30 had a fubar and lost the opportunity to nail the Satan tank.

Towards the end a US infantry squad took out another AT rifle and another infantry squad removed a platoon leader with some opportunity fire.

We called it a draw in the end as the Satan tank set fire to the church trying to weed out some ruskies.. that was naughty..

Looking for a wargame that can be played on typical, gas station style, atlas road maps.

Ive been looking for a wargame or ruleset that can be played using regular maps of real world locations. Like states, cities or even topographical maps of national forests. Ive found a few that seem interesting, but im wondering what else might be out there.

I found one called Ranger that seems promising but im having a hard time finding out much about it on the internet. Theres only a handful of resources ive been able to find on it, but it does seem like it could be played on other maps. That is if I could find a copy.

Im not too picky about genre. Whether its 1700's, 1800's, WW1 or 2, Vietnam, Modern, Fantasy, Sci-fi or whatever else it might be. Ive just always thought it would be cool to be able to play a wargame on a map of a real location.

Focus on 15s: Legion of the Shadow King

The Legions of the Shadow King rise from Noxian underworlds, silent but for the clatter of rusted iron and ancient bone.

They are fell-hearted undead, filled with the mana of night; every atom of their bodies transformed by darkness.

At his command they march, at his command they fight, a shambling host of bone and spirit that knows neither fear or travail, disease or disorder.

Revenants awed and ancient, the Legions of the Shadow King have known ten thousand years of victory!

any GOOD narrative wargames with Lovecraftian Elements/Factions?

Hey there! BIG warhammer and warhammer fantasy fan who has been in a very big lovecraftian binge recently. Im running Delta Green for some friends and just generally love lovecraftian tropes and themes. Coming from warhammer though- theres surprisingly little in the field of Lovecraft that fit into 40k. The best is the Genestealer Cults, but those embody more HR Giger than Lovecraft in alot of ways- while the basis of the cults themselves are somewhat similar to Innsmouth and the Deep Ones cult, it fails to hit some of the vibes im looking for. anyone got anything?

The Big Thing for me is active narrative and worldbuilding. its what makes 40k and WHF so appealing to me.

Wurfare: A Medieval Strategy PBBG with deep Vassalage mechanics. Looking for 100 Beta testers!

Hey everyone! 👋

I’m a huge fan of browser-based strategy games, and I’ve recently developed my own PBBG called Wurfare.

🚨 Right now, the game is in a Limited Beta phase and I am capping it at exactly 100 players. I want to keep the community small and focused initially so I can closely monitor the mechanics, balance the economy, and gather direct feedback before opening the floodgates.

The game is heavily focused on battles, diplomacy, and most importantly, politics. I wanted to create a game where player interaction drives the world, rather than just fighting NPCs.

Here are the core features of the game:

👑 Advanced Vassalage System: This is the feature I’m most proud of. You can conquer and vassalize other players, forcing them to pay you tribute. However, it’s not just a flat tax — vassals can secretly build up their forces and rebel against you. Even better, your vassals can have their own vassals, creating a complex, multi-layered hierarchy of power!

⚔️ Deep Politics & Alliances: You can’t survive alone. You’ll need to form strong alliances, negotiate with rivals, manage your subjects, or plot betrayals to reach the top.

🏰 6 Asymmetrical Medieval Races: You can choose from 6 different factions to build your empire. Each race has its own unique special unit and distinct economic bonuses, allowing for different playstyles (whether you want to focus on a booming economy or an aggressive military).

The game is completely browser-based and free to play. If you want to grab one of the 100 spots and help shape the future of the game, you can join here: www.wurfare.com

Since I'm an indie dev, community feedback means everything to me. I would absolutely love it if you guys could give it a try, let me know what you think of the vassal system, and what features you'd like to see next.

Let me know if you have any questions, I’ll be hanging around in the comments. Thanks for reading!
