New facial interface question

I bought the dream air slam from Microcenter.

The stock interface is incredibly uncomfortable and I can't effectively wear the headset more than 20-30 minutes without a giant red mark on my forehead and then pain.

I asked Pimax support if I can get the new facial interface once it starts shipping if I provide my proof of purchase.

Support said it's not possible and only available for customers that ordered through the website?

Sounds like I would need to return it and wait until my store has new stock in but there is no way of knowing when that will happen.

Can anyone verify this information?

DA SLAM blackouts

So the mOLED I briefly had was experiencing blackouts before its final disconnect loop and I exchanged it for a DA SLAM which has had blackouts as well but with interesting behavior. I *had* been able to restore the screens if I shook my head immediately, but if I waited just a few seconds I would have to press the screen power button to restore the screens. Now last night and today, without any software changes, I have had two instances where I had to press the button and the DA came back in passthrough mode. My game was still in progress - the monitor was mirroring the display and head tracking was still working but absolutely no video was being passed to the headset. I turned off all the USB power management stuff and all my ports are one controller.

On a side note, holy hell this thing hurts after about 45 minutes. Got a Studioform on the way but Globular Cluster needs to make a DA strap, their Vision Pro set works awesome.

Suggestion for Pimax EVO: Adjustable Binocular Overlap

I have a suggestion for Pimax EVO (or even the sboy3 driver) that I think quite a few people might appreciate, especially Micro OLED headset users.

It would be great to have the option to freely reduce the binocular overlap to save performance. Right now, we don't have a driver-level solution for this, which means we can't do it in some games. For OpenXR titles, we can currently achieve it with various OpenXR Toolkit mods.

Personally, I don't notice a 20% reduction in binocular overlap on the left and right at all. The FOV stays the same, but in every game I've tested, it gives me an extra 14–20 FPS. Thanks to this, Assetto Corsa EVO and Project Motor Racing have become playable for me at relatively high settings. Without cropping any fov or butchering any other settings...

Since you already plan to add vertical FOV cropping, maybe you could include this feature as well. In my opinion, the Dream Air and Super OLED have unnecessarily high binocular overlap, especially for sim racing. As I said, I don't even notice a 20% reduction on the left and right....but I notice the performance improvement immediately. Maybe anyone else with intrest in this?

Looking at doing this same mod on my DA when it arrives, however instead of using the top USBc port for the audio connection as I need it for other accessories, can I use one of the ones on a side stem instead and just modify the plastic adapter clip to make room for it?

Do we know if it is the left or right stem that handles the audio?

After some requests I made a video to try to explain my project - a surreal VR explorer - kinda...

I hope you VR gamers like it and since it's in development it would be great to read what u think is cool and what to add, etc. Also if you play these kind of games. What is it that you seek when you play VR?

DFR on AMD cards

Can you run dynamic foviated rendering in ganes like iracing or le man's ultimate with an AMD 9070xt?

Im currently using a PSVR2 and it doesnt work because the Pimaxmagic4all only works with NVIDIA cards but does the native software and a pimax headset bypass that and work with AMD cards or still no?

Current lead time if ordered a Dream Air Slam today and how much better visuals than my Quest 3?

I have a sim racing system with a pretty high end computer setup:

- CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D
- RAM: Corsair Vengeance Pro RGB 64GB (2x32GB) 6000MHz CL30
- Motherboard: Gigabyte X870 WIFI & Bluetooth
- Graphics Card: GIgabyte Windforce OC RTX 5090 32GB

I recently tried VR and now really enjoy racing in VR 90% of the time and have only experienced my Meta Quest 3. I have been watching a lot of YouTube reviews and reading lots of posts on here and originally I planned on waiting 6 months before I placed my order, hoping most of the bugs get worked out before I ordered my Dream Air Slam edition. It seems Pimax has possibly stepped up their customer service and it appears there are more people that are extremely happy with their purchase with not as many defective units being shipped and received as of late? Hoping this means Pimax’s quality control has also made the effort to test each unit more thoroughly before they ship them out. I hope the DA also does not have issues after a year or two of use, but I guess time will tell as there is no way to determine this. They do offer a 12 and 24 month warranty, but I feel a 12 month warranty should automatically be included with how expensive this VR headset is.

Hoping for some feedback. Will I be blown away with how much better the Dream Air Slam performs over my current Meta Quest 3 when sim racing with iRacing, AMS2, and ACC EVO? I have really enjoyed AMS2 as my go to VR sim racing game when just practicing tracks and different cars and not racing online as of late. I am hoping the DA slam it is night and day difference over my current Quest 3, since my 5090 system should have no problem running it smoothly.

My Pimax shopping cart with 24 months warranty and discount code I found that provided me $46 discount is showing $2,658.92 with tax and shipping to CA, USA 🇺🇸. It’s a lot of money, but hope if I do place the order, I don’t have to wait a long time and receive a working unit and do not have to deal with hours of trouble shooting with Pimax, if I end up being one of the unlucky people that receives a defective unit.

Does anyone know the current lead time to receive a Dream Air Slam if an order is placed today? Also, any feedback on how much better the graphics are compared to the Quest 3 would be greatly appreciated.

Dream Air LH review from a Sim/VR enthusiast

I wanted to share my initial impressions of the Dream Air from the perspective of a longtime VR and flight/racing sim enthusiast.

I’ve owned a bunch of headsets over the years, including the original Oculus DK1, Oculus CV1, Valve Index, a Pimax 5k I quickly returned, Quest 3, and now the Dream Air. I held onto my Index for a long, long time because I was huffing copium that Valve would eventually release a worthy successor for enthusiasts, but the Steam Frame does not look like a compelling upgrade from my Quest 3.

What I wanted was pretty specific: OLED panels, higher resolution, a wired connection for uncompressed visuals, and, as annoying as base stations can be, the ability to use my Knuckles controllers and Vive trackers again. I am absolutely babying those things.

Overall, I’m pretty happy with my purchase, though I’m still evaluating whether it’s worth the price I paid. I found the Dream Air at an online retailer, only had to wait a couple of days for it to arrive, and have a 30-day return window, so I’d recommend shopping around before ordering directly from Pimax.

I’ll get the negatives out of the way first, because they are real.

The negatives

1. Price and value

This is hard to quantify broadly. I’ve invested heavily in this hobby over many years, and the value proposition changes dramatically depending on your own circumstances. Still, out of the box, this really does not feel like a $2,000 product to me.

I’d have a hard time recommending it to someone who is not already very sure that they want this exact kind of headset, especially if they need the more expensive SLAM version. This is an enthusiast product with enthusiast compromises, not a polished mass-market device.

2. Build quality and comfort

The quality of the internal hardware seems solid, but the facial interface, speakers, and head strap feel like complete afterthoughts.

I don’t really understand why Pimax even needed to include the little onboard speakers if space and weight savings were such a priority. They sound tinny, and I would much rather have had a standard 3.5mm audio jack or a proper DMAS head strap, which I believe is supposed to be available soon?

The stock facial interface is pretty uncomfortable for me, although I am finding ways to deal with it. I have a StudioForm gasket coming in the mail, and to be fair, it’s not like the Quest’s default strap and facial interface are much better, so I won’t ding Pimax too hard there.

Where I absolutely will ding them is the split cable design and the placement of the junction box. I had a miserable time during the first day or two trying to figure out how to route the cable comfortably. Eventually I found a decent solution: I used the Velcro strips to attach the cables to the higher rear strap so they come up and fall off the back of my head more like a ponytail instead of getting caught on my neck and shoulders. That made the headset a lot more usable.

My ears also make contact with the sharp metal connection point for the head strap, which is pretty annoying. I’ll probably wrap that area with some light foam padding eventually.

Also, why is the USB port inaccessible with the stock gasket? I use headphones, and not being able to plug them directly into the headset with a short cable is annoying. The StudioForm gasket will fix this too, but it feels silly that I need an aftermarket solution for something so basic.

Seriously, Pimax: lose the tinny onboard sound and give us a proper audio solution or a normal headphone jack. I'd be shocked to know people who buy something like this are sticking with the default audio.

3. Sweet spot and FOV

This one is subjective because everyone’s face is different, but I’m struggling a bit with reading text that is not directly in front of me.

Once the headset is positioned perfectly, it’s okay, but I notice halation and blur falling off pretty quickly when I glance from side to side. Coming from the Quest 3, this was jarring. The Quest has true edge-to-edge sharpness in a way that makes glancing down at dials and instruments much easier.

The FOV is not as bad as I initially feared. Horizontally, it feels a little bit wider than the Quest 3 to me, but it is also noticeably shorter vertically. I think the new gasket may help a little, but I can already see the edges of the panels where it sits currently, so maybe not. At times, coming from the Quest 3, it almost feels like looking through a letterbox because the vertical FOV is reduced enough that I can see the top and bottom edges of the screens. It is not constantly distracting, but it is definitely noticeable.

I am also seeing some weirdness with binocular overlap. For instance, if I glance fully to the left, my right eye’s vision almost completely disappears. I have a large head and a fairly wide IPD of 69mm, so it may just be that this headset is a little too small for my face. Your mileage may vary.

The positives

1. Panels and resolution

I am so thrilled to use an OLED panel again.

Playing Half-Life: Alyx on this thing is legitimately terrifying. The image is remarkably sharp, and there is virtually no screen-door effect at all. It really is a beautiful picture.

In most games, I’ve already started learning to ignore the slightly out-of-focus areas of the lenses because I get so pulled into the immersion. My main flatscreen monitor is an LG OLED TV, so I’m pretty accustomed to OLED, but the colors in the Dream Air still pop wonderfully.

I really, really hate LCD panels for gaming. Every time I jumped into a space game like Elite Dangerous on an LCD headset, the thought of "I sure wish space was actually black” lived rent-free in my head. On the Dream Air, space is finally black again.

That said, 4K per eye takes a hell of a GPU to run. I have an RTX 4090 and an i9-13900K, and I am still feeling the struggle a bit. I suspect foveated rendering is going to help a lot, but I have not fully figured that out yet. I would really like to not have to buy a 5090, but that may end up being the next big-ticket item after my wallet recovers.

2. Weight

I have a crappy neck, so the weight was a big selling point for me.

I would not say I forget I’m wearing a headset, but it feels much more like wearing swimming goggles than wearing a helmet. Quickly moving my head results in basically zero sway, which is a huge plus for immersion. The light weight is one of the Dream Air’s biggest strengths.

3. Tracking and the lighthouse ecosystem

My cockpit is on a 4DOF motion rig, and I absolutely hate relying on a glitchy little Witmotion IMU for motion compensation. Base stations and Vive trackers work much better for that use case, although I am still dealing with some vibration issues that I’m working on through software filtering and physical damping.

Managing base stations without a Valve headset is annoying because they do not automatically turn off when you close SteamVR, but I’m fixing that by plugging them into smart plugs I can control with my voice or phone.

I know the industry has largely moved away from base stations, and I think the SLAM version is probably going to make more sense for most people. But I still have a soft spot for room-scale VR with laser-accurate tracking. I also really missed using the Knuckles controllers.

There is a lot more friction here than there is with the Quest 3. I miss passthrough. I miss how easy the Quest is to just throw on and use. But for my specific setup, I think the tradeoff may be worth it.

Conclusion

I briefly owned a Pimax 5K headset years ago and returned it because it was so annoying to operate. I am happy to say that this experience is much, much better. The Dream Air has a lot less friction, and things generally work much more smoothly.

If you are buying this headset, you are buying it for two reasons: the visuals and the form factor. I think it does a great job at both, but not out of the box.

The OLED panels, high resolution, low weight, wired DisplayPort connection, and lighthouse compatibility are exactly what I wanted. In the right game, the Dream Air can look stunning. But the stock comfort, audio, cable routing, vertical FOV, and lens sweet spot make it hard to call this a polished $2,000 product.

I cross-shopped it with the Bigscreen Beyond 2, but coming from a Quest 3, I wanted the best chance at edge-to-edge clarity possible, and that seemed like one of the biggest concerns with Bigscreen. The Crystal Super was on my radar too, but for my use case, I could not justify the larger form factor and tradeoffs just for the ability to swap optical engines.

VR never really took off as an industry in the way many of us hoped, so I do appreciate that Pimax is still trying to build high-end enthusiast hardware. For that reason, I am inclined to recommend the Dream Air- but only with a very large caveat.

This is not the right headset for the vast majority of people. If you are not already heavily invested in enthusiast-level VR hardware, I would have a hard time recommending it. If you mostly want ease of use, passthrough, wireless freedom, and excellent edge-to-edge clarity, the Quest 3 is still incredibly hard to beat.

But if you specifically want OLED blacks, very high resolution, a wired uncompressed image, a lightweight form factor, and you are willing to tinker a bit to make the comfort and cable situation work, then there is not much else out there that can really compete with the Dream Air.

If Pimax could improve the comfort, fix the audio situation, clean up the cable design, and somehow squeeze in a wider FOV with a bigger sweet spot, this thing would be worth its weight in gold. As it stands, it feels like an incredible set of panels in a headset that still needs a little help becoming the product it should have been out of the box.

Smart Smoothing works as it should in Pimax Play v2.02

Yup. Been testing Smart Smoothing in Pimax Play v2.02. It works now like Meta ASW or Steam Reprojection. The old version would only smooth the frame rates but it won't try to sustain at your refresh rate. The new version, once it is enabled, it will lock at half of the frame rates of your refresh rate. It looks good too. Not blurry at all. I do see some minor artifacts.

Anyone know of a studioform alternative?

Due to the sudden change in EU Duty Laws. Shipping to my country (Dennmark) is currently unavailable. I'm soon to get my dream air, and really want a proper i interface and face pad from the start. Does anyone know of a good alternative?

I found a gasket from Zeeflyboy that I want to print, but are there any good alternatives for the face pads and spacers?

Dream air slam sboys3 stramvr home either floating or in floor

I recently got the dream air slam and haven’t had much opportunity to really play with it yet. That being said when using the sboys3 driver and I go into steamvr home I am either floating or sunk down in the ground. I set up the play area in the regular pimax play before using the driver. is there something I need to do? EDIT-You just have to do room setup in steamvr, don’t need to have the headset on because the instructions are on your monitor.

Pimax Crystal Light - Positive Review from Longtime VR Sim Racer & General Gamer

I have been using VR headsets for sim racing since the Oculus Rift CV1 was released in 2016 and since then have owned and used many headsets, including the CV1, Rift S, Quest, Quest 2, Quest 3 (most recent), PSVR, PSVR 2, Reverb G2, Valve Index, Samsung Odyssey and the Lenovo Explorer. Most recently I used the Quest 3 with Virtual Desktop and PSVR2 with the PC adapter for PCVR, mostly sim racing in iRacing. I watched and read a lot of reviews and decided to take the plunge and get a dedicated PCVR headset and settled on the Pimax Crystal Light.

I received the Crystal Light, DMAS speakers and Studioform comfort kit and got everything set up and adjusted. I have now done about a dozen iRacing official races using the Crystal Light plus I have used it for some non-sim racing including Resident Evil PC mods. In summary, the headset is everything I was hoping for and more, its a nice upgrade over the PSVR2 and Quest 3 for PCVR, at a more than fair price of $800. Harkening back to my list of factors pre-purchase, here are my thoughts based on the original factors I identified that drove this upgrade for me, plus a few more that I have identified while enjoying the headset.

  1. Clarity of Image - Wow, what a difference. This is probably the biggest upgrade over the Quest 3 and PSVR 2. I do not know if its just the higher resolution, or the DisplayPort connection, or the lenses, or something else, or a combination of all factors, but the difference in undeniable. The image clarity is superb. And I can clearly see so much farther in the distance. The YouTube videos don't lie on this point.
  2. Saturated Colors, Darker Blacks - Nice upgrade here as well, the QLED panels on the Crystal Light produce rich, saturated colors and inky blacks that are very comparable to what the PSVR2 does on its OLED panels, albeit with less brightness. The Quest 3 LCD panels just cannot compete, the colors are much more dull.
  3. No Battery - The Crystal Light cable is big and cumbersome and I have learned to live with it but I don't like it. I wish there was more length for the power adapter, its too short. This is the biggest downside of the move to the Crystal Light. But its nice to not worry about a battery.
  4. Sound Quality - The SMAS speakers that ship with the Crystal Light are too quiet and lack sufficient volume. The sound quality is OK I guess, I just could not hear them. That being said, The DMAS speakers produce rich, full sound with ample volume. They are every bit as good if not better than the off ear speakers of the Index and G2. The DMAS speakers are also a huge improvement over the stock sound options that come with the Quest 3 and PSVR2. I appreciate Pimax including them for free as part of the sale promotion but in my view they should be included with all Crystal Light and Super headsets.
  5. Comfort - The stock front cushion is too thin and gave me headaches during longer races. The Studioform front cushion is thicker and much more comfortable. The Studioform Apache comfort strap also helps distribute some of the weight to the forehead. I am wearing glasses for now while I wait for my Reloptix lens inserts and that definitely adversely affects comfort of this headset. Overall, it is more comfortable out of the box than the Quest 3 and about the same as the PSVR2. But with the Studioform mods its much more comfortable and useable for long sessions. Glasses are not advised.
  6. Proven Product - Clearly this is a mature, refined product, nothing suggests its in beta. It just works.
  7. Price - $800 including shipping, controllers and DMAS speakers is great, that is only $200 more than the Quest 3.
  8. Controllers - They are surprisingly good, they remind me of the Quest 2 controllers which are very good. They are comfortable to hold and work fine. No issues.
  9. Tracking - The inside out tracking just works, no issues. I have not lost tracking at all. Occasionally I get a screen flash for the boundary and so I went in and re-did the room set up.
  10. Pimax Play Software - It works fine, set up was straightforward, as were the firmware updates. The interface reminds me of Steam VR, I would say its on par with that but not as good as Virtual Desktop, the industry leader.

Dream Air review from Super OLED

Having now a couple days with the Dream Air SLAM, as well as using with Sboys3 driver, I feel in a good place to provide an honest review.

The TLDR is: I will probably look into selling my Super 50 and OLED.

The mechanics: The weight alone is enough to make this my primary set. I feel at times that some try to justify the “modability” of the Super in terms of being able to balance easier, or the Studioform straps, etc. But the reality is, it is a heavy headset. Even with the OLED, which does reduce the weight, its heavy. This invariably leads to the headset swinging with head turns due to momentum, most pronounced in racing sim. This does not exist for me with the Dream Air.

The face gasket sucks, for sure. But being able to place it on a halo strap (I am using a Bobo) lets me seat it on my face perfectly, with minimal added weight. I am looking into finding someone (any takers?) to print the Zeeflyboy face gasket and AVP strap adapters to trial them, but am waiting on the Studioform face gasket as well.

Setup and software: No issues, connects right without a problem. Did not delete anything or do a clean install with using my Super. It was simply plug and play. And given that each headset uses its own drivers on installation as well, there should be no issues that forces a clean install. The Pimax EVO has been working without a problem, which leads me to my next source of compliments

Sboys3 Driver: Simply put, this is incredible. In MSFS 2024, of which I already run with a 5090, it essentially has eliminated any stutters and is silky smooth. I turn off motion smoothing in SteamVR if flying prop planes since the motion interpolation creates a lot of artifact, but the increase in FOV and smoothness is astounding. This is full 90hz, no frame cap. Mostly high settings, some ultra, foveated render set to 30 for MSFS. Iracing performs similar.

Audio: I use DMAS on the Super. Surprisingly, the Dream air audio is very acceptable, and though I do not have it directly in ear and the depth I get from DMAS, it is not anywhere near a reduction enough for me to miss the DMAS, at least as of yet. The pros of the headset are too much to cry about losing the DMAS. Really hoping that the DMAS halo strap comes out soon.

Regarding the ordering, it came in 2 days. Pimax, if you are seeing this, I see a lot of conflicting info on Reddit and your own site regarding discounts and DMAS headstrap bundles and discount. I received no offer or notification for either, but if there is a way to still offer or honor the 50% DMAS strap credit please let me know, and hopefully release it soon.

The FOV loss compared to the Super 50 ppd is noticeable, but not egregiously so, and certainly not enough for me to give up the color and clarity fidelity I get from the OLED.

In summary, so far so good, far exceeding expectations. Hoping to get the DMAS from Pimax soon, and will likely look into selling the 50 PPD and OLED super modules.

Floor calibration with Sboys3 Driver

Hello,

I have a Pimax DA SLAM and I can't get a good calibration for the height of the floor.

Everytime I boot the headset the floor is at a different level.

Sometimes I'm way up in the sky and other times the floor is at my chest.

How do you manage to have a good calibration that stick ?

Side question : has anybody manage to make Into the Radius 2 work in this headset ?

despair….

As some of you know, I received my package yesterday after a long 13-hour wait; I was finally able to put the headset on and play... for an hour and a half. The face foam is a total nightmare, and the Pimax software isn't much better... For starters, the FOV is really small for a headset at this price point... Light leaks in through the face foam, and it also prevents me from getting my eyes close enough to the lenses to get a better field of view... I have to tighten the straps so much that I couldn't play for more than 90 minutes—my forehead was hurting... I could see my computer screen on the left and the distant kitchen light on the right, even though it was nighttime... So, here is the temporary solution I came up with. The face foam on my HTC Vive Pro 2—despite the headset's weight—never caused me such intense facial discomfort... Yes, it looks ridiculous... lol... but I’ll have to make do with this until the "Studioform" one arrives... As it stands, I can't enjoy the headset at all, so I found this stopgap measure just to enjoy the magnificent visuals I saw for that hour and a half last night... I didn't actually play; I just tested it, but it was too painful and uncomfortable to continue. So, I ended up watching YouTube... Anyway, that's my desperate solution... Thanks, Pimax—thanks for delivering a headset I paid over $2,300 for, equipped with face foam and a strap that look like they came from AliExpress... 🙄

This DA SLAM rocks!

I've tried replacing my 8 YO Samsung O+ serval times over the last several years. I've tried the top rated LCD panel headset, but they just can't compare to OLED panels. I also wanted inside out tracking because my gaming space is not conducive to LH tracking. Thought I had a winner with the Samsung XR, but the dark range in PCVR gaming was subpar.

I had tried a Pimax not long after they first entered the market. What a clustery mess that thing was. From hardware to software and everything in between. So I was very skeptical about this purchase. But this thing is, hands down, the best VR headset I've ever tried and I've had 6 different ones on my face. The blacks, the colors, the clarity, the FOV, the overlap are all stunning. The fit and finish of the hardware itself is very well done. The Pimax 2.1 software is a simple yet powerful program that just works. The foveate rendering increased my FPS substantially, and I can't even tell it's there in-game.

I had previously gotten in line for the DA-SE model but switched it to the DA via email. The response to my email was next day, and the unit shipped 2 weeks later. They followed up twice to make sure everything went well. That's customer service right there.

Does the face plate fit my face. Nope. But i have a big head, and to gig someone for something so subjective is just stupid and "Karen like" it's not funny. Bunch of whiney children if you ask me.

It does sound like some people may have issues. But my experience with this whole process make me question the validity of some of those posts.

This is arguably the best VR headset on the market, and with Pimax's dedication to making it better I think it will only get better as the software and firmware matures.

How to get SBOY3 driver to work on DA SLAM

I got my DA SLAM yesterday, download Pimax Play, and tried DCS. It worked fine, but I wanted more.

I downloaded the Pimax Evo, the SBOY3 1.31 beta, installed the drive, enabled open port in Pimax Evo, started steam VR.

Then I couldn't find the start dream air button on SBOY3 driver! I restarted my PC and all apps, still no button to start SBOY3.

What am I doinh wrong?
