Letting child watch you on the potty

Does anyone let their child watch them on the potty to "inspire" their toddler? We haven't been trying to potty train that long but it's been more than a week with somewhat frequent accidents and her just not wanting to even sit on the toilet. Yesterday, I was at my wits-end and decided that she'd shadow me when I pee to encourage her. Shockingly, we only had one accident which was a poop. So I'm curious, does anyone else do this or am I weird? Also, I've only let her watch me pee, do you think poo-ing in front of her would also be helpful? I have a 5 month old baby as well and I feel bad not doing things the proper way but I need as many short-cuts as I can (as long as I don't inflict any psychological damage!) because I feel so worn-out.

Edgewater - growing, declining or staying stable?

I’m curious on people’s thoughts in Edgewater NJ more specoficaly, the future of the town. A family member is thinking of buying here and I actually live here and I love it but she got me thinking of what the future might be like. On the one hand, I see a ton of construction which signals growth. But, I see several large empty lots that had businesses (golf, movie theatre) or empty store fronts. Also, while It does have some great coffee shops, cafes, and restaurant, I feel like there’s no real “heart” because it’s not too walkable and also feels like a lot of the people are only here for a couple of years and it’s more of a transitional place.

How to find a good contractor

My husband and I are moving to Norther NJ (Bloomfield to be specific). We'll need to fix a sewage problem in the basement and would like to add a bathroom in the basement right after we fix the sewage problem. Does anyone have a contractor they've worked with that they recommend? Also, in general, what are some red flags that we should look out for in contractors. It's our first home and I don't know what to look out for.

We'll also need to do some more general tasks, painting, updating cabinet hardware, switching out sink faucets, if anyone knows of a general handyman that can take on these tasks, or should we just check thumbtack?

Survey Findings

While under contract, we had a survey done which mentions,

"DWELLING

ENCROACHES ON 25' FRONT BUILDING

SETBACK LINE PER F.M..

POSSIBLE EASEMENT BASED ON FIELD

OBSERVATION BASED ON DRAIN."

We've reached out to find out exactly what that means (so we'll probably get an answer on Monday) but curious if anyone has ever had this mentioned in a survey and what it means...

Sewage issues flagged by inspection but not by sellers plumber

We had a home inspection that occurred a day after a big rainstorm. A summary of our inspectors findings is below, "When opening the side sewer cap, "cake" was observed within a pipe that should only have air. This is a sign of backups having occurred. (see photo below) The sewer line has a low spot between 12 and 51 feet within the video, this is where the pipe transitions from cast iron to clay. Clay pipes have shifted and moved likely cause by the leaking of pipes undermining pipes resulting in a shift. Roots and misalignments were observed in joints past this low spot and a live worm also was seen. It is recommended to have the pipe re-pitches within the low spots and either replace or re-lined to prevent leaking and root intrusion. Consult with a sewer repair company for correction."

Also including the link to the camera scope: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPbv5UaIkJc

However, when the sellers did their own inspection with a plumber, they found no substantial issues. Their remarks are below:

Services

Check water line from the house to see if it is lead or copper

  • Looked over 3/4 line in basement
  • Water line coming from street to house
  • Confirmed to be copper

Camera Sewer Line

  • Camera Sewer line in basement
  • Cast iron to clay transition
  • No breaks
  • No roots
  • Sitting water at approximately 5 ft til 15 ft
  • Ran water to check flow of water
  • Sewer is flowing and functional

We're asking to get a third inspection (via a plumber we're contracting) but I'd appreciate hearing other people's perspective on whether our inspectors findings are actual red flags or nothing to be concerned about. We also have a video if that would help!

Potentially buying, sewage issues flagged by inspection but not by sellers plumber

We had a home inspection that occurred a day after a big rainstorm. A summary of our inspectors findings are in the images I've attached.

However, when the sellers did their own inspection with a plumber, they found no substantial issues. Having said that, their plumber did the inspection while it was very dry and hadn't rained in the past week which I'm thinking could have resulted in issues being not so visible.

We're asking to get a third inspection (via a plumber we're contracting) but I'd appreciate hearing other people's perspective on whether our inspectors findings are actual red flags or nothing to be concerned about. We also have a video if that would help!

Home Inspection Credit

Hello, we just got our inspection report and a number of issues were flagged. When I initially spoke to the inspector, the biggest items he seemed to be concerned about were the sewage and water heater. With regards to the foundation, he said the garage foundation requires an expert but the foundation on the home looks fine, however I noticed this does not come across in the report. In general, I'm not quite sure what is realistic to ask for and what's not. Anyone have any idea on what's fair? I'll ask my agent but I would like to form my own stance before I speak with him, so insight would be helpful!

1 Sewage - Marginal - Issue in the sewer line + whole house trap
2 Water Heater - Poor - The water heater supplies are missing a ground bonding cable / The water heater is rusted and actively leaking at the bottom, failure imminent
3 Lead issues on the back door
4 Chimney - Marginal - Missing/loose mortar in the brick joints at the chimney / water intrusion
5 Kitchen Plumbing / Faucet(s) - Marginal - sink leak
6 Kitchen Doors / Windows - Marginal - Rear storm slams such, closing mechanism not functioning
7 Kitchen Electrical - Marginal - GCFI / Reverse polarity (Safety Hazard) / No outlet in the right of the sink to avoid draping cords across the sink / Ceiling light did not operate
8 Kitchen Appliances - Marginal - No tip guard or not aligned properly for oven / No exhaust fan or heat shield above the cooktop
9 Bathroom - Sinks - Marginal - Slow drain / sink drain is leaking
10 Living room - Doors - Marginal - Front storm door has difficulty latching / anti-gust chain and spring
11 Bedroom 1 - Doors - Marginal - Entrance door doesn't latch because frame is broken along with latch plate missing / side facing Windows right counterweight is not connected
12 Low Drainage in sink / tub - bathroom
13 Electricity setup in kitchen (Hazard)
14 Stair, Steps, Hallways - Marginal - The handrail from the first of the second floor is lower than today's standards, when coming down the stairs reaching could be a trip hazard / The handle at the top of the stairs is also lower than today's standard from a possible fall over hazard. This handrail is also not child safe
15 Exterior Foundation Wall - Marginal - There are cracks in the foundation. All cracks have a potential for leaking and for future potential movement.
16 Garage - Overhead Door(s) - Marginal - The garage overhead door is difficult to operate. Door does not appear to close fully / signs of structural shifting with the framing of this door.
17 Cooling - Marginal - AC past its expected life + Air conditioner temperature differential was lower than normal operating standards.
18 Cooling / Heating Distribution - Marginal - Ductwork in need of insulation
19 Electric / Main Panel - Marginal - Service size of 100A is lower than the current needs.
20 Bathroom - Cealing / Walls / Floor - Marginal - Tiles at the entrance loose / Ceiling and wall transition show signs of lack on insulation.
21 Bathroom - Shower - Marignal - Caulking / Grouting in the shower / tub area to help prevent damage + Shower stall had a slow drain
22 Living room - Windows - Marginal - Front facing window has a broken left counterweight
23 Bedrooms - Walls / Ceiling - Marginal - The ceiling where the wall and ceiling are angled and under the roof line shows flaking and cracking paint. This is typically indicative of ice damming.
24 Roof - structure - Marginal / Collar ties
25 Roof - insulation - Marginal / upgrade (Ice damping)
26 Roof - ventilation - Marginal / upgrade (Ice damping)
27 Drainage System - Marginal / Proper grading around the home + gutters extended away from the home at least 6'
28 Basement - Electrical - Marginal / GCFI
29 Siding - Marginal - above garage is missing / Siding at the reaf of the home is damaged and loose
30 Caulking - Marginal - Dried / Cracked

NOTE: We are getting quotes but our agent asked for an initial list of the things we think we'll want a credit for.

Inspection Inquiry

We're under contract for a home that is tenant occupied. The inspection will be June 7th because the tenant does not have availability this weekend and the inspection report is due June 9th. I'm concerned that if the inspectors determine specialists are needed, we won't have enough time to get them (because we only have 2 days). I mentioned this to our agent and he said "typically" owners will allow specialists in after that period but he also said that we cannot put that in writing because he knows the sellers won't agree to it on paper. Does anyone have any experience with this and/or any thoughts on what we should do? Technically, we could probably move the inspection in but that'd mean taking a day off work and we have a strong preference not to do that.

Home Inspection Recommendations

Hello! I'll be buying a home in Northern NJ and am looking for a great Home Inspector. Does anyone have any recommendations? The house is pretty old and we're worried about potential inspectors not catching issues.
