Why has Sri Lanka been unable to eradicate dengue despite having previously eliminated malaria?

Sri Lanka successfully eradicated malaria decades ago and was once considered a global public health success story. Yet dengue continues to affect tens of thousands of people every year.

Why has Sri Lanka been unable to eradicate dengue despite having previously eliminated malaria? Is it mainly due to public behaviour, weak enforcement, or limitations in vector-control strategies?

Also, what concrete actions has the current government taken to reduce dengue cases? Are these measures working, and what additional policies should be considered?

Interested in hearing perspectives from public health professionals, researchers, and anyone with experience in dengue control.

Is it worth relocating to Sri Lanka for good for a university lecturer position?

I have seen/shared smilar posts on this topic. However I need your insights please.

I left Sri Lanka about 15 years ago for my studies and have been living overseas since then. Due to family circumstances, I may need to seriously consider returning and settling back in Sri Lanka.

I am a molecular biology research scientist in a western country. Although job in my field is contract basis projects and sometimes stressful, I purely enjoy What I am doing as a researcher and working with this advanced technology.

My family back home sent a job application to a government university in Colombo district for a senior lecture position. And they expect me to get this opportunity and come back to Sri Lanka for good.

This university has no research facility. Position is mostly about teaching. Basic Salary is about Rs.130,000 p.m. + Academic allowance 189% of the monthly salary. Then it's subjected to APIT. First 3 years are on probationary period?

This department has some Professors without PhDs, and some have completed both their BSc and PhD in the same Sri Lankan university/same department. Most of them have no research profiles and looks like have not done anything significant despite the teaching undergraduates.

I left the country 15 years ago. My only experience in Sri Lankan universities are that outdated. Back then I know how politicalized and hypocritic university system was for both students and new staff. I do not know if that has changed now? So I am concern about academic bullying, backstabbing during promotions.

We are not well off both in Sri Lanka and overseas. However I live a decent life overseas and love the freedom I have. Job is uncertain and mostly fixed term contracts.

So my family in Sri Lanka's argument is this local university job is permanent, have a pension, and freedom. And living with/close to family.

For those currently living in Sri Lanka, do you think this is a good time to come back and settle permanently?

I would appreciate your views on:

  • The economic outlook over the next 1–5 years
  • Cost of living trends
  • Quality of education
  • Infrastructure, utilities (internet, electricity, water), and public services
  • Safety and general quality of life
  • Any major challenges that returnees should be aware of
  • What would be a realistic monthly rent for a decent 2-bedroom house or apartment in Ragama/Kadawatha?

Also, for those who have returned after many years abroad, what were the biggest surprises, challenges, or positive experiences when resettling in Sri Lanka? I would value honest opinions—both positive and negative—as this is a major life decision for my family.

Thank you.

Am I the only one who finds loud phone conversations on buses exhausting?

I regularly take the 425 bus around 5:00 pm-5:30 pm / 5:58 pm- 6:24 pm (Drop-off), and there is a regular specific passenger who talks very loudly on the phone for almost the entire journey. Happens always. It doesn't matter what language they speaks, the issue is really the loud and duration in a crowded public space. I can see people moving seats, putting on headphones, or looking visibly uncomfortable.

Some people are trying to read, listen to music, or just unwind after work. A long, loud phone conversation can make that difficult for everyone else.

I am not very comfortable confronting strangers, so I usually just sit there and bear it. It made me wonder: what is the polite way to ask someone on a bus to lower their voice or end the call? Or is this just one of those things we all silently tolerate?

What is a wave? How it looks like?

I am neither physics nor mathematics major. My background is in biochemistry. I have been interested in various physics topics time to time.

Could you explain me what is a wave and how it actually looks like? is it a spiral or just something with Peak and Trough?

Also, how fourier transform was invented? I mean how on earth even a genius discovered each wave of a messy wave.

Thanks in advance for your support.

Best way to sell a car with a fair price

Mates, I am on the verge of needing a plan B. My job contract ends in 2 months and there are no research grant funding available for an extension (unless miracle happens in coming weeks).

So I better get prepared for the worst to pack my things and go abroad. All my assets in Brisbane is my car (2018, Toyota YARIS, 20, 823 Km odometer. serviced regularly. This car very lightly used, mostly go to university or supermarkets. Never been out of BCC. Lol.

If the worst happens and I need to sell it relatively quickly, what's the best process in Brisbane to get a fair price without too much hassle? And process of selling a car.

Thanks!

Is there a reliable ai for converting jpg/png illustration into svg?

I have a scientific illustration created using Gemini (png format). I want to edit it using Inkscape.

Are there any online tool to do this?

I tried around 10 online websites, even before its capability / testing they are asking to either subscription or payment.

Few paid versions still gives low resolution svgs.

So I'm afraid to subscribe to more.
Does anyone know any reliable tool.

How to safely turn right into this kind of crazy junction when road is busy with cyclists & other vehicles (no traffic light)?

I was in Red 🔴 line waiting until all the bicycles and vehicles passed and wated fair low traffic to right to get in to the road. When i was crossed bicycle lane, in the middle of left way of the road to get into right side, another driver 🔵 put his car to the road.

Who has to give way in this kind of crazy junction?

🟥 line vehicle has to wait until no traffic from right hand, to cross two lanes safely to get into the road when turning right.

Recommend few books to start falling love with reading.

I always wanted to read. But it's hard as i forget the relationships of the characters and some unknown words. I passed school literature exams just by hearing the stories (not audiobooks, just when teacher was teaching ).

I used to read posts on Quora. It has become garbage site.

Now I'm in my 40s. Fed up of reading social media posts.

Suggests some books easy to read and falling in love with reading

Why in SL you have to pay to bank for online money transaction, debit card payment, and also annual fees?

Title says pretty much.

It makes me wonder whether the system is designed to support customers or just continuously extract fees from them. For an average person, especially with rising living costs, these small charges add up quickly and become a real burden.

Is there any clear justification for this structure, or is it just how the banking sector operates here?

Aren't government doing nothing for these daylight robbery!

How comfortably can you live with 200 K monthly salary?

Due to personal circumstances, I have to relocate. The job offers approximately Rs. 200,000 per month.

The nearby suburbs are: Peliyagoda, Kiribathgoda, Kelaniya (Never lived in this part of the country, and not lived in SL in recent past either).

I would need to rent a 3-bedroom house with a bathroom for 3 adults.

How realistic is this salary for living comfortably in those areas nowadays?

Mates, Got an oil stain on my suit jacket from food while travelling. It’s my only suit, so I’m afraid to experiment.

What’s the safest way to remove oil stains from a suit jacket? Any specific products available in Coles or Woolies that worked for you without damaging the material?

I’m in a bit of a difficult spot and wondering if anyone here has gone through something similar.

I’m 40, and my entire family is in Sri Lanka. I moved overseas for postgraduate studies about 10 years ago and now live in Australia as a permanent resident. I work as a molecular biology research scientist at a well-established research institute. I genuinely enjoy what I do, and professionally it’s been a very fulfilling path.

That said, the reality here in Auz is quite different from Sri Lanka in terms of job stability. Most research roles are contract-based, so every year or two there’s uncertainty — renewing contracts, reapplying, and never really having a long-term guarantee. It’s a bit stressful, but I’ve learned to live with it because I value the work itself.

The bigger issue is the pressure from back home. My parents are getting older, and along with relatives, there’s a constant expectation that I should return to Sri Lanka and “settle down” there.

But when I think about it realistically, I struggle to see where I fit. The only obvious path is trying for a government university lecturer position, which is highly competitive and uncertain. Outside of that, there aren’t many research institutes I can join at this stage unless I had entered the system much earlier. I’ve also been quite hesitant about private universities after seeing their questionable degree programs.

Financially, we’re a middle-class family. Not rich at all. The comfortable life we have in Sri Lanka is largely supported by the savings I’ve built working overseas. If I move back, most decent job opportunities are in Colombo — and we don’t have a house there. Renting and managing the cost of living in Colombo would be quite challenging.

So I feel stuck between two worlds — a career I love but with instability abroad, and a sense of responsibility pulling me back to a place where I’m not sure I have a viable path.

Has anyone here faced something similar? How did you navigate it? I really wish there were more opportunities in Sri Lanka for people in my field at this stage of their careers.
