Author Talk: Devin Allen at Gaithersburg Library, Wednesday, June 24: 6:30pm

REGISTER: https://mcpl.events/devin-allen

Join us for an author talk and book signing with local author and photographer Devin Allen at the Gaithersburg Library.

Baltimore native Devin Allen is a self-taught artist who achieved national recognition when his photograph of the Baltimore Uprising was featured on the cover of Time magazine in May 2015, rendering him only the third amateur photographer to have his work published by the magazine. Following the tragic deaths of George Floyd, Tony McDade, and Breonna Taylor, his photograph from a Black Trans Lives Matter protest appeared on the cover of Time in June 2020.

Allen became the inaugural fellow of the Gordon Parks Foundation in 2017 and continues to serve as a dedicated ambassador. He is also a 2024-2025 Baldwin For The Arts Fellow.

His photographs have appeared in publications such as New York Magazine, The New York Times, The Washington Post, i-D magazine, and Aperture, and have been exhibited at the Jack Shainman Gallery, the Baltimore Museum of Art, and The Banneker-Douglass-Tubman Museum. They are also part of the permanent collections at the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C.; the Reginald F. Lewis Museum; the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art at Auburn University; and the Studio Museum in Harlem.

An accomplished author, Allen released his first book, A Beautiful Ghetto (Haymarket Books, 2017), which garnered an NAACP Image Award nomination. He later published No Justice, No Peace: From the Civil Rights Movement to Black Lives Matter (Hachette Book Group, 2022), winning a Nautilus Book Award.

Allen is a recipient of the Gordon Parks Foundation/Steidl Book Prize, culminating in the publication of Devin Allen: Baltimore (Steidl, 2025), which features previously unpublished work accompanied by texts from notable writers.

In 2021, he launched From Baltimore. For Baltimore, an apparel and footwear line in partnership with Under Armour, which sold out within hours. The collaborative team, Under Armour x DVNLLN, reunited in 2025 to introduce their Rose Collection. He curated the Scout Art Fair, a juried exhibition in its second year as part of Artscape, the largest free arts festival in the United States.

Allen founded Through Their Eyes, a youth photography education program, and the Maryland Commission on African American History and Culture’s award for dynamic leadership in Arts and Activism.

Preparing to Breastfeed: Learn the basics of breastfeeding VIRTUALLY with MoCo Lactation 5/28 noon & 6pm

Join MoCo Lactation's founder Stephanie Weinberg, IBCLC as she walks us through the path of successfully breastfeeding your baby.

By the end of this virtual program, parents will understand how to stimulate a full milk supply, how to latch and ensure your baby is drinking enough from your breast, and how to find professional lactation support.

*While this program refers to “breastfeeding” and “mothers”, it is intended to be inclusive to all families and parents, including those who identify as the birthing parent and prefer to use the term chestfeeding to describe feeding their baby from their breasts/chest.

Did you know: The World Health Organization (WHO), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of an infant’s life. While 82% of families are exclusively breastfeeding when they leave the hospital following birth, only 23.7% of families are exclusively breastfeeding at 6 months of life.
-Breastfeeding Report Card United States, 2020

About the presenter: Stephanie Weiberg is an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant, the highest
credential available to lactation. Stephanie left her 15 year career in technology in 2019 to pursue a career in lactation and launched her private practice MoCo Lactation in 2024.

A Zoom Link will be sent to all registered attendees, approximately 24-hours before the program begins.

You will need to be signed into Zoom to attend this program via the web.

To sign in, you must first create a free account: https://zoom.us/signup

May 10

Connie Morella Library

11am - 4pm

REGISTRATION REQUIRED: https://mcpl.events/american-girl

In honor of American Girl’s 40th anniversary, Blake Changnon and The Changnon Family Museum of Toys and Collectibles invite you to explore a special pop-up exhibit inspired by the beloved Happy Birthday books of the Historical Characters.

This mini museum brings to life the first seven Historical Characters’ birthday stories. Through rare and original artifacts from the museum’s collection, visitors will discover how birthdays were celebrated across different times and places in American history, and how these moments welcomed readers into each girl’s world.

Just as American Girl has spent 40 years inviting children into the past through story, this exhibit celebrates the birthday books that first introduced readers to each girl—and the worlds they have been returning to ever since.

This exhibit is hands-off to protect these fragile, one-of-a-kind items from the museum’s collection. Visitors of all ages are welcome, as long as museum etiquette is observed; however, we recommend this experience for ages nine and up.

Come celebrate history, storytelling, and the magic of first introductions—American Girl style.

Attendees are invited to join us for a picnic on our back lawn featuring light refreshments after they see the collection. Please bring your own picnic blanket.

This exhibit is independently curated and is not affiliated with or endorsed by American Girl or Mattel.

Registration is required for this event. Registrants will have the opportunity to view the collection and walk through the exhibit. Groups will be contacted prior to the event with an assigned fifteen minute time slot to walk through the collection. Requests as to timeslots will be honored when possible, but are not guaranteed. As part of County Government, MCPL does not collect personal information other than for the purpose of providing programs or services.
