Stuck between Tier-2 CSE and ECE. Need honest advice on placements, workload, and future scope.

Hey everyone,

I’m currently at a crossroads regarding my B.Tech stream selection and could really use some perspective from seniors and industry professionals here.

I am getting options for both Computer Science Engineering (CSE) and Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) at a Tier-2 college.

While I am trying to keep an open mind, I'm finding it hard to weigh the trade-offs between the two branches specifically within a Tier-2 ecosystem. Here is where my head is at:

  • My Current Tech Interest: I have a basic understanding of programming (familiar with Java/OOPs/basic logic) and I don't dislike coding, but I haven't deeply explored hardware/electronics yet.
  • The Dilemma: I know CSE is generally the "safer" bet for immediate IT/software placements. However, I’ve heard that ECE provides a lot of flexibility if I want to pivot to core electronics, VLSI, or embedded systems down the line—while still keeping software options open.

I would love to get your insights on a few specific questions:

  1. Workload & CGPA: How brutal is the ECE curriculum compared to CSE? Is it significantly tougher to maintain a high GPA in ECE while simultaneously prepping for coding interviews?
  2. Tier-2 Campus Placements: Do core electronics companies (like Texas Instruments, Intel, Qualcomm) actually visit Tier-2 campuses, or are ECE students there mostly reliant on IT companies anyway?
  3. The "Open to All" Reality: Do top-tier tech companies visiting a Tier-2 campus allow ECE students to sit for software roles, or is there a strict branch barrier?
  4. Long-term Outlook: Given the current tech market and advancements in AI/hardware, which branch do you feel offers better resilience and growth over the next 5–10 years?

If anyone who chose ECE at a Tier-2 college (and either stayed in core or moved to IT) could share their experience, that would be incredibly helpful.

Thanks in advance for the help!
