Is this normal for manure management?
So I’ll get it out of the way and admit that I’m a new horse owner and when I chose a spot to board, I didn’t know what kinds of things to look at or ask - I was only grateful to have something close to home.
Over a few weeks of boarding I was quickly recognizing some things that I wasn’t too sure about, and the most frustrating has been the lack of manure management.
My horse was put into a paddock after quarantine with two others and I found that there was probably 5 inches of manure just sitting in the dirt paddock at difference stages of composting. It was smelly, had flies, and once I dug in, I found maggots. Photos in comments of before and after I cleaned it up.
PNow I have no problem maintaining a paddock, but now that I’ve cleaned it all, I’m the only owner there regularly to pick it out. The other owners rarely come to visit, and I suspect they either didn’t know the state of the paddock or just genuinely don’t care?
Regardless, I try not to come off as “the new horse owner that is being high maintenance”, but this cannot be sanitary living conditions? Is this normal to leave manure in a paddock to just compost where it is?
