Sunset – SR-ST-1 – Prologue

We’re introduced to Giada, a Liberi funeral director & Giullo, a Sankta funeral party designer. They are currently in a Laterano funerary hall picking out a coffin for their latest client when Yuki Makoto suddenly bursts out from one of the coffins, surprising the two of them.

Makoto is shocked to find out he is suddenly in another world where people have feathers and halos, and he has no idea how he got there from Tartarus, but he is worried about his friends from SEES and explains to Giada & Giullo that he is looking for his lost companions without revealing too much. Giada & Giullo take him in as a lost kid for the time being and bring him to the Notary Hall, where Insider personally approves Makoto’s temporary permit and reminds Giada & Giullo that they should enroll Makoto in school since he is just a kid. Makoto is fascinated by the sounds of explosions and gunfire regularly coming from the streets as the three of them make their way to the academy, where the class monitor Amiya greets Makoto as a fellow student.

Appearing Moon – SR-1 – Before Operation

Amiya leads Makoto to class, where the Doctor introduces themselves to him as the homeroom teacher. The Doctor tells Makoto that today is the last day for students to submit their career choice forms for the upcoming job experience internships, and Makoto realizes it is a good opportunity to go out and look for his friends. The three options Makoto writes down are funeral director, funeral party designer, and desserts hall assistant (the Doctor can tell what Makoto is thinking and suggested a job that wouldn’t raise any suspicions). Makoto thanks Giada & Giullo for their help, but when the two of them ask him why not report to the Notary Hall to find his missing companions, Makoto thinks to himself that he cannot raise any suspicions since this is clearly a different world and he can tell Laterano has very strict laws. At that moment, Koromaru and Amada Ken appear from the street and are extremely relieved to reunite with Makoto. After seeing off the 3 SEES members at the student dorms, Giada confronts Giullo and asks if he trusts Makoto a little too much, to which he tells her that he will do his best for every customer, whether it is Makoto or his recently deceased aunt whose funeral they are currently planning, and reminds Giada that Makoto was the one who helped her pick the best coffin. Meanwhile at the dorms, the 3 SEES members go through what they know: Yuki Makoto, Amada Ken, Aigis, Yamagishi Fuuka, Takeba Yukari and Koromaru were conducting a routine investigation at Tartarus when a strange door appeared, and they suddenly found themselves in Laterano. Amada Ken & Koromaru spawned inside a confessional car which greeted them warmly, and then Koromaru located Makoto through smell. They decide that their next move is to find the 3 missing girls and the door, and just then Ken notices that it is almost midnight and wonders if the Dark Hour will also happen in Laterano. As the clock strikes 12, Koromaru barks in anger, and the 3 SEES members head outside to find out that certain parts of the city are seemingly under the influence of the Dark Hour, while certain parts are completely normal with time flowing as usual, confusing the 3 of them. Koromaru spots Yukari fighting Shadows in the distance.

Flooding Moon – SR-2 – Before Operation

As the 4 SEES members fight off the Shadows, they see an utterly bizarre scene: a drunk Sankta on the street walks directly into a mass of Shadows but comes out completely unharmed, and the Shadows only closely monitor the Sankta without attacking him. Fuuka joins the battle halfway through and as they take care of the final Shadow, the Dark Hour-looking phenomenon dissipates and the streets return to normal. The group is relieved to be reunited, then they quickly note that their Personas are weaker than usual with some sort of interference blocking their links, which is why Fuuka wasn’t able to locate the team immediately with Juno. Ken and Makoto explain to the 2 girls that they are in another world, and Makoto calls the Doctor to arrange for 2 more transfer students to enroll. The next day, the 2 girls quickly befriend Amiya as the Doctor arranges for them and Ken to be in the same job experience paths as Makoto, and the Doctor hints to Makoto that he should go out and understand this world a bit more. Meanwhile, Giada & Giullo comes into conflict over their job, and Giada admonishes Giullo over being too nosy and that she can do her job even without the Sankta’s empathy, to which Giada apologizes. Ken is fascinated to learn about the history of Terra in class, and notes that historical facts such as the Dracos of Tara and the Pegasii Kuranta almost seem like fairytales to him. After class, the SEES members discuss what they know: Aigis is still missing, but since each member appeared In Laterano at a different time, it is likely that Aigis hasn’t arrived at Terra yet, and their best chance of returning to their world is finding that strange door again. They also reflect on last night’s battle, with Yukari noting that although the drunk Sankta was unharmed, the light on his halo was noticeably dimmer, and is worried whether this is a sign of Apathy Syndrome or not. There was no Dark Hour, but there were Shadows on the street, which leads Fuuka to theorize that the Shadows most likely came to Terra through that door as well, so their best chance of finding it is by following the Shadows’ movements. Worried that Laterano will also be drawn into SEES’ fight, they decide to seek the help of someone from this world, and Makoto gives the Doctor a call.

In the dorms, the SEES members tell the Doctor everything about them, including the Dark Hour, Personas, Apathy Syndrome and Shadows. The Doctor informs the team that they will check on last nights’ victims to look for signs of Apathy Syndrome, and also decides to follow SEES on their next investigation to observe their fighting style and check whether or not they can see the Shadows like the SEES members.

Stunned Moon – SR-3 -Before Operation

The next day in class, the SEES members are fighting off fatigue because time flowed as usual during their investigation, and the Doctor forced them to attend school anyway. Today is firearms classes, and Makoto notes that their Evokers don’t stand out because every Sankta in Laterano carries a patron firearm. Amiya explains to them that during firearms classes, Sankta students handle actual guns, whereas non-Sankta students are given the option to handle other gun-type weapons such as grenade launchers because Terran guns are too difficult for them to use. Fuuka is unusually excited at the idea of handling a real gun, and Makoto also notes that it is a rare opportunity to learn what it means to wield a gun that can actually harm people. The team picks the actual gun course, and the firearms instructor inspects Makoto’s evoker and notes that its construction is similar to an Arts Unit, leading Fuuka to wonder if their Personas can be classified as a type of Originium Arts. Makoto picks a small pistol from the selection of guns, and their fellow classmate Vannini teaches him how to aim and fire.

None of the SEES members are able to successfully fire, but the instructor notes that it is completely normal for non-Sanktas. He also explains that Sanktas do not need to learn about guns and can instinctually understand and “communicate” with their guns through empathy, and that the sounds of firing give the Sanktas inner peace because they can feel their connection with God, but he also notes that since the “incident”, the newer batch of students have been progressing slower than usual. Adnachiel, an alumni and teaching assistant, leads the team to the gun-type weapon course, where Vermeil and Minimalist are practicing handling crossbows. After class, Fuuka is disappointed that she doesn’t get to play with her grenade launcher more, but Amiya explains that Laterano has plenty of public shooting ranges for them to visit, and that it is a good thing they aren’t Sankta, otherwise they would have to spend all their free time on firearms and ammo training to catch up. Yukari reacts to the word ‘ammo’ and is still in disbelief that they were really using live rounds in class, and Amiya explains further that all Sankta students must fire a total of 13,600 shots within two years of class under legal supervision in order to qualify for the national firearms license. Back in the dorm, Ken is fascinated by the idea of patron firearms, and Fuuka notes that if Ken were a Sankta, he would be almost of age to receive one by now, but Yukari is unsettled by the idea of giving a gun to a 12-year old. Just then, Giada & Giullo visit the dorm with treats to check on the SEES members and discuss about their upcoming job experience at the funerary hall, but Giada seems to be in a horrible mood and quickly leaves the dorm which leaves the others perplexed, especially Fuuka. Giullo apologizes and leaves, and the members wait at the dorm over treats until midnight while discussing the Doctor, whose presence is at once reassuring yet intimidating to them. As midnight arrives, they hear explosions in the streets, and rush out to discover Aigis fighting Shadows.

Shifted Moon – SR-4 – Before Operation

The next day, Aigis meets Amiya, then follows the team to their job experience session at the desserts hall, where Ken, Aigis and Koromaru are pretending to be customers while the others work at the counter and kitchen. Makoto is confused why he is the only one in a butler outfit, to which the manager explains that they have a promotional video shoot today and he was selected as one of the models. Just then, Idida bursts in and asks the manager if she will finally approve her sugar-free carbonated ice cream stall, to which the manager annoyingly affirms that the very idea of sugar-free ice cream is a blasphemy. Idida hits back with “If Laterano doesn’t need a God, then who says ice cream needs to have sugar in it?” In the end, they decide to hold an impromptu contest with Idida selling the store’s sugary ice cream while Makoto sells Idida’s sugar-free ice cream, but Idida keeps telling her customers that sugar is bad for health while Makoto is even more of a machine than Aigis when it comes to sales.

Just then, Velliv arrives with her ward, and while Velliv is surprised that the manager would even allow something as unholy as sugar-free ice cream to appear on the shelves, her ward is extremely interested and buys out all of it at once. Idida laments the fact that Sankta love sweets despite how unhealthy it is, to which the manager gently tells her that sweets are the very lifeblood of Laterano and that it reminds them that even after the “incident”, life in Laterano doesn’t change that easily, reflecting on the first time her mother bought her Madeleines to stave off her headache after firearms lessons. In spite of that, the manager agrees to allow Idida to have a stall there. Meanwhile, Velliv tells her ward that not everything needs to be associated with the reforms of Laterano, least of all sugar-free ice cream, but her ward, revealed to be Ensia Silverash, tells her that the taste really isn’t bad and that “now our two nations are somewhat similar”. At night, Aigis confirms that the Shadows they have been fighting aren’t actually Shadows but rather creatures resembling Shadows, to which Yukari and Ken express their concerns whether or not following these creatures will actually lead them back home. Regardless, Makoto affirms that exterminating these creatures are also for the safety of Laterano, then Aigis and Fuuka recall earlier in the day when Aigis was forced to unleash her arsenal in front of Lateran civilians to take out a Shadow but unexpectedly received applause and praise for her unconventional weaponry. As they head out at midnight for their investigation, the SEES members finally notice that every night since their arrival has been a full moon and they wonder if Terra doesn’t have the same lunar phases, but they also notice that no enemies have appeared today despite the creatures flooding the streets every night.

Crescent Moon – SR-5 – Before Operation

At their job experience at the funerary hall, Giada explains to the SEES members that Laterans traditionally go with burials at certain stop points on the mobile city’s designated route where there are stationary cathedrals to handle affairs, but the hall they are in right now is the city’s first step to standardize cremations. She further explains that all Lateran citizens will have the right to choose their method of last rites, and that they job is to preserve the dignity of the deceased. The newly built funerary hall is about to host its first funeral (Guillo’s aunt), and Giada & Giullo have enlisted the SEES members to assist in menial tasks. Giullo goes on to explain his position; in Laterano, funerals and parties often overlap each other heavily, and as a funeral party designer his job is to plan the venue, schedule, facilities, food, guests and even the music, according to his aunt’s wishes (she requested for a karaoke system to be installed). Giullo also reveals that Giada has been in a foul mood lately out of nervousness, because not only is this her very first time hosting a funeral, but she is also the first Liberi funeral director in the city. He disagrees with her plans for the funeral to be a somber, serious affair and that it is better to preserve the Lateran tradition of making funerals a lively gathering of people having fun. As the team works, Yukari stumbles upon a newly registered death certificate, and she recognizes the deceased as the drunk Sankta man from the other night. That night, they report to the Doctor about their discovery, which unnerves them because Apathy Syndrome should not kill its victims that quickly, and the certificate’s listed cause of death was ‘unknown’. Fuuka also notes that during combat, she observed that some of the creatures would ignore the SEES members and silently observe the Lateran citizens instead. The Doctor pledges to look into any further victims that have come into contact with the creatures, then switches topic and asks about their experience at the funerary hall today. The Doctor explains that Laterano has just recently awakened from a long dream, and that the existence of the funerary hall set up by the Sixth Hall is just one of many changes occurring within the city and its people.

Waning Moon – SR-6 – Before Operation

The next day, Makoto asks Giada about the deceased drunk Sankta, and Giada tells him that looking into the man’s cause of death will require submitting a request to the Notary Hall which will take time. Makoto then asks her on a hunch that if anything strange has happened in Laterano lately, to which Giada wonders if Makoto is asking about what happened last spring. They go out for coffee, and Makoto wonders about a biscuit shaped like blocks forming a ring. To his surprise, Giada tells him that this ring is their God. She explains about the Law, and further tells him that they have never once seen their God “alive”, but learnt about Its death on the same day as Its existence. She also explains the Sankta’s empathy and its changes after the Law’s passing, and that one emotion very rarely felt by Sankta is ‘embarrassment’. She also tells Makoto that Giullo’s idea of Lateran funerals being a lively affair is not because of tradition, but because it used to be that when one Sankta was having fun, every Sankta would be having fun. To her, funerals like that should no longer be allowed now that the Sankta have changed. Back in the funerary hall, Giullo has had enough of the cold war and asks a surprised Giada to reconcile, openly admitting to her for the first time that he can’t tell what she is thinking. Giada accepts and then leaves the two to it, and Giullo talks to Makoto about his time spent in Columbia and how empathy shaped his life with his father, the only Sankta in his childhood. Makoto wonders if Giullo’s aunt set up her last wishes for the funeral out of empathy with Giullo, but he says he has no clue, and affirms that even if Giada has a point, Laterano has already lost enough and should have the willpower to celebrate every passing instead of allow sadness to overwhelm them. At the morgue where everyone is gathered, Giullo looks open the face of his deceased aunt and is lost for words. Giada begins to prepare the body while the SEES members observe carefully. Makoto is silent, Aigis is calm, Fuuka is looking away, Yukari is forcing herself to watch, and Ken has his head hung low with an unknown expression. They are all thinking of the same person at that moment, but nobody says a word. To them, the ‘face of death’ is something they are painfully familiar with. Back at the dorm, Makoto repeats to the other SEES members what Giada told him earlier, and the team concludes that the conflict between Giada & Giullo is not merely a difference of opinion, but a fundamental difference in how they view the current state of Laterano. Makoto begins to speculate if the appearance of the creatures resembling Shadows might be related to the Law’s passing, but Yukari says this doesn’t explain why only the SEES members can see them. At that moment, Fuuka senses the presence of a creature stronger than anything before, and the team rushes to the scene.

Waning Moon – SR-6 – After Operation

They rush to the funerary hall but find nothing there, and Fuuka comments that the presence has disappeared. Just then, Giada appears and asks what they’re doing in the middle of the night with weapons drawn. When Makoto asks what she was doing, Giada somberly replies that she was arguing with Giullo again. Giullo had deduced that Giada was attempting to use this funeral as an opportunity to reform Laterano’s traditions, but he insists that they have a duty to follow the deceased’s last wishes, to which Giada snaps back that Giullo hasn’t met his aunt in twenty years and has no idea what she is really thinking. Giada admits to the SEES members that Giullo is correct about her wishes to reform Laterano, and remarks her uncertainty of living in an ever-changing Laterano as a Liberi, wondering what she must do to prove this is also her home as she walks away. Fuuka wonders if they would ever see such loneliness on the streets of Laterano had they arrived before last spring.

Hanging Moon – SR-7 – Before Operation

The next day, Giada does not show up to work, and Giullo is worried. The SEES members visit the funerary hall on their day off and expresses their concern about Giada, telling Giullo that they know about his and her argument last night. Tomorrow is the funeral, but Giullo is certain that Giada will show up, convinced that they both share the same goal of wanting to send the deceased off with dignity. The Doctor contacts Makoto and tells SEES to meet him at the dessert hall, but along the way Makoto can’t help but notice that the streets are quieter than usual on a weekend. At the hall, the Doctor asks the team if they remember any details about the drunk man’s encounter with the creatures, and Makoto notes that his halo became visibly dimmer immediately afterwards. The Doctor realizes something, then first explains the Sankta’s biology and their halos to the team, including fallen Sankta and the fact that the brightness of their halos are related to their emotional state. The Doctor then puts forth his hypothesis of the creatures’ origins to the team based on his knowledge of Personas, Shadows and consciousness in their world. This explanation is not shown, but the team is later seen fighting Shadows again at midnight while worrying about what the Doctor told them earlier.

Hanging Moon – SR-7 – After Operation

Giada visits one of the stationary cathedrals at the mobile city’s route, where Plume is currently standing guard. The two friends have a chat about many things including both their pasts, and Giada tells Plume a story about how as a child, she threw a tantrum at her grandmother’s funeral and ran outside to hang by the fence instead because she felt that the giant balloons and cheerful music were too stupid, and nearly ruined the occasion for everyone. She remarks that she became a funeral director because she didn’t want to see another person hanging by that fence again, but also says that she knows she is only doing it for herself because she was the only person on that fence that day.

Full Moon – SR-8 – Before Operation

The night before the funeral, the team wraps up their investigation for the night and remarks on their accumulated fatigue, because back in their world they can still get a good night’s sleep thanks to stopped time during the Dark Hour. Aigis offers to do a carpet sweep of the city to find the presence that Fuuka detected last night while the others get some rest, but the team refuses to let Aigis go alone. The team returns to the dorm to rest, and Koromaru spends the night with Makoto while he speaks about preparing for the battle tomorrow. The next morning, the funeral has begun, but a guest has already messed up the decorations by accidentally activating the confessional car that held all the balloons and props together. Giullo admonishes the guest, but the man named Felice turns out to be Giullo’s aunt’s ex and almost-fiance from 15 years ago, and the one who oversaw the writing of her will at the Notary Hall. An anxious Giullo begins to ask Felice if his aunt never changed her will after all this time because it was what she truly wanted, but Felice reveals that the last time he saw her was a month ago when she turned him away. Felice then tells Giullo that he knew how things would end the moment he saw her blaming herself for “never cherishing and always playing around”, but when Giullo expressed his confusion at that statement, Felice said he would elaborate no further to preserve her dignity then went back to restoring the decorations. As the SEES members watch on, Giullo asks Giada exactly how his aunt died, and Giada reveals that she shot herself with her own patron firearm. In a flashback, it is revealed that Giullo’s father had killed someone and fallen a long time ago. In his deathbed, his last words to Giullo were “Where do we go after death when we’ve killed our kin?” and “Giullo, come with me.”   A staggering Giullo asks Giada why she hid this from him, then immediately regrets his question as she was only doing her job to preserve his aunt’s dignity, and that he was a hypocrite for claiming to know the best intentions for someone he hadn’t met in 20 years. Giullo starts to wonder if the party he planned for his aunt was appropriate for someone who had died in despair, but Giada chimes in that funerals are a ceremony for the living and that she has accepted that no one can speak for the dead. Giullo raises his voice, asking if Giada pitied him, and then pleaded with her to take the kids away as he raises his patron firearm to his head. Giullo spills his heart out even as Giada and Makoto try and convince him to put the gun down, lamenting that the pure holy city that had once brought him so much happiness and pride was now marred with pain and shame, and that the lives they knew were already over.

At that instant, a fearsome creature appears behind Giullo and covers his eyes as the surroundings begin to darken, and the SEES members who have already predicted this prepare for combat. In a flashback, the Doctor hypothesizes to the SEES members that the creatures they have been fighting are most likely the collective desires for death borne from the Laterans’ hearts, which explains why the drunk Sankta man died after touching them. Despite being daytime, the world distorts and a full moon appears in the sky, and the creature absorbs Giullo into its body. This time, the Laterans are able to see the creature, and the funeral guests flee in a panic as Makoto directs a shocked Giada to look after the guests and keep them away from the fight, declaring that there will not be a second death in this funeral today.

Full Moon – SR-8 – After Operation

After an intense battle, the creature retreats into the darkness and spits out a writhing Giullo, and Aigis kicks away the patron firearm in his hands. Giullo pleads with the SEES members to let him die and that they can’t keep saving him, nor can Laterano go back to the way it used to be. A terrified Giada gathers her courage and steps forward to console Giullo, telling him he still hasn’t finished his job with the funeral party yet. She used to think that Giullo was blindly holding on to tradition and ignoring reality, but she now realizes that he is also looking for a way to change things. In her view, ceremonies are a language to ‘translate’ complicated things into something tangible. She used to hate traditional Lateran funerals because Sankta do not need this ‘translation’ and are merely holding ceremonies to dance to their hearts’ tunes, but a proper ceremony needs to be sincere, and she feels that Giullo was truly sincere in wanting to express joy in the funeral; the same joy he felt as a child living in the holy city. She says that it is a nice feeling to have, but also asks if he wants to keep living in the past forever, and to that Giullo finally agrees that he gave up too early. As the full moon dissipates and the surroundings return to normal, Fuuka declares that the interference that has been blocking Juno this whole time is finally beginning to clear, and that she might be able to locate the door now.

Full Moon, One Life – SR-ST-2 - Epilogue

Patrizion reports to Pope Yvangelista XI about the incident at the funerary hall, recounting that witnesses have begun to forget about the creature they saw, but suicides after the Law’s death remain at a concerning high. The Pope asks about the Sankta man who failed to kill himself, and Patrizion reports that no signs of falling were seen anywhere on his body. The Pope begins to go into a tangent about the last known case of a fallen Sankta due to a failed suicide attempt from 83 years ago, remarking that it technically fulfils the conditions of “malice towards a fellow Sankta”, to which Patrizion irritably tells the Pope to stop interrupting his report. The Pope continues, saying that by all counts Giullo’s actions should have definitely caused him to fall, to which Patrizion begins to pick up on the hint that something else might have changed in the wake of the Law’s passing, but the Pope decides to not jump to conclusions yet and orders Patrizion to keep this record as a top secret. The last part of the report is about how Laterano plans to deal with the ‘foreign visitors’, but the Pope declares that his ‘special consultant’ has other plans for them. Later, the Pope meets the Doctor, who informs the Pope that the door has finally been located and that he will personally see them off. The Pope expresses his thanks to the Doctor for resolving the situation, but the Doctor says that he would’ve helped the SEES members regardless, stating that youngsters should not have their futures be tied down. To that, the Pope asks if the Doctor is talking about him, but the Doctor jokes that he is not while referring to the Pope by his real name. At the dessert hall, a reinvigorated Giullo treats the SEES members to a full-course dessert meal as thanks and an apology, and the team is glad to see he has fully made up with Giada. According to the Doctor, the creatures should no longer appear anymore, but the real problem is something the Laterans will have to solve for themselves. Giullo’s job as a funeral party designer was a one-time gig, but this time he decides to stay by Giada’s side for real and declares that he will no longer allow despair to destroy him again.

The SEES members enjoy a few days of peace without needing to go out at midnight, and it is now time for them to leave Laterano. Amiya and the Doctor are there by the door in the academy to see the team off. Amiya is sad to see them leave and lists out all the things they hoped to do together as classmates, but Yukari and Aigis say that they still have a mission to fulfil back home. The Doctor delivers one last message to the team: “Teachers always want what’s best for their students, especially if their hearts are set. Go do what you believe in, and remember that you are important in many peoples’ hearts.” Makoto looks back one last time and thanks the two for everything they’ve done, then pushes open the door as a blue butterfly flies past his vision and his memories of the holy city begin to blur.
