Want to hear other peoples experiences on dental surgery/ help!

My baby is turning 17 in July. Hes lived a pretty healthy life besides his teeth being really bad maybe the past 6/8 years. He never let us brush them or anything and we gave him dental treats but that obviously doesnt replace the tooth brushing. No surprise most of his teeth have fallen out and hes got tooth disease and gum disease now.

We notice it got worse when a couple of days ago he started not really eating his food. We then boiled some chicken for him and hand fed him. He did eat but while eating he would have tremors in his jaw. We also noticed hed try to scratch his face more often which I thought he was just itchy but it was a clear sign of pain and discomfort in his mouth.

We took him to the vet earlier today and she said that he has clear discomfort and pain in his mouth and that we either need to put him down or hes going to have to get surgery to remove his teeth which he might not make it through. She contacted another animal hospital which she recommended for dentistry work and told us that they are really good at this stuff and that they will contact us to go take him in to do bloodwork and tests.

In the meantime she did give us pain medication drops which we gave to him earlier with some troubles. If anyone knows a good way to give him the drops please let us know, its basically impossible for us to drop them into his mouth as he wont let us touch his mouth or open it, we tried to drop some on his food (chicken and peach) he ate some but he also spat some out so we arent sure how much of the pain killers he did ingest..

But anyways I made this post to get peoples opinions and their own experiences.

I know ofcourse to wait for the bloodwork to be done before deciding whats going to happen but I wanted to hear how dental work or any anesthesia surgeries have gone down on old pups like mine!

Not sure if this is also needed but we do think he also has some early onset dementia as hes been really confused and goes and stands in corners to stare at the wall, walks back and forth, lays in spots hes never laid in before and just barks at nothing which he never did when he was younger.

He also does loose his balance sometimes and his breathing has been a bit off when sleeping where he does makes noises.
