Resources for engineering and application of seals, gaskets, orings

Hello, stepping out of my comfort zone and helping with a project involving sealing surfaces for a part that's cast aluminumnumnum to another piece of cast aluminumnumnum. Material supplied is high temp silicone and viton. I know nothing about seals, but, I'm relatively decent at reading and learning. Thanks.

What QA/Inspection tools do you own or wish you owned?

Slowly preparing to rebuild a bottom end in house. While I can't afford a CMM and other cool tools, what tools should I have in the shop for QA, inspection, or assembly? I trust my machine shop, but I know people are human and mistakes happen. I would like to catch issues before they become grenades.

EE major looking for crash course/fundamentals in ME topics

Hi, outside of trying to double major, are there any books or MIT OpenCourseware type offerings I can do in my spare time to try and learn more about material science/thermal/fluid mechanics/general mech eng? I'm just starting my EE program and will be working on data acquisition. I feel seriously behind the power curve after meeting the team.

Checking clearances on VK56DE (VVT intake cam) and Kelford cams.

Hello,

I have ordered a set of T2 Kelford turbo cams for my VK56DE (port injected, VVT on intake cam). I am looking for a way to measure and double check valves won't kiss pistons when VVT is phasing the cam. I don't have a good way to test this at the moment. Stock rods and stock pistons for now, but will eventually do forged with a small dish for ~9:1 CR. Thanks.

Documentaries on the technical side of motorsports?

Currently reading "How to build a car" by Adrian Newey and wondering if there are any good documentaries that cover race car engineering or what teams go through to build winning cars. Thanks!

Feedback for the Masters in IT Artificial Intelligence concentration?

Hi folks,

Considering the Artificial Intelligence concentration for the Masters program over cyber security. I have a large amount of professional experience but none of it is in AI.

"Human Centric" seems to be mentioned numerous times and I'm starting to wonder what that really means.

If you went through the AI track, would you recommend it? Do you feel there was any academic or professional value?

Thanks

GI Bill: Taking courses at another university that transfer in to your "parent" school?

Hello,

I am currently attending ASU Online and planning on taking my math (MAT) requirements at Rio Salado. The equivalents are established and listed on AZTransfer, and, academic advising at ASU confirmed they will transfer back.

When it comes to the GI Bill, does this become a mess? I'm willing to eat the cost of Rio Salado out of pocket.

  1. If I do attempt to have GI Bill cover these courses, do I have to be enrolled at ASU in courses while taking courses at Rio Salado?
  2. Rio Salado operates on 16/14/8 week semesters while ASU seems to work on 7.5/15 week semesters - does this cause issues with your rate of pursuit? (half time/full time, etc)
  3. How far in advance should I start the paperwork for any of this?

Thanks

(When) to move from G?

Alright folks, I know timing the market is wishful thinking and mainly luck. All of my funds are in G right now, I decided to recently consolidate from other 401Ks and felt squieemish during the recent dip.

I am traditionally terrible at investing - buy high, sell low - terrible.

Should I wait or just yolo and disperse into C,I,S,etc?

Post 9/11: expiration approaching, not finished with degree, VRE?

I checked the guide and unfortunately, I don't think the VA will accept "stupidity" as a reason I couldn't use all of my benefits in time.
Clock is up in December, should I apply now for VRE? Can you apply multiple times if denied? I am about half way through my degree with a 4.0 GPA.

Starting to look for scholarships as well.

Any advice welcome.
