From VIC - I’m sick of seeing my local roads with median strip weeds taller than my car, patchy potholes on the state roads, rubbish imbedded along freeways. How can a council run at an apparent surplus yet some of the major roads within its boundaries look like this. Thoughts?

I’m a news TV watcher and speaking to those who decide what gets reported on morning news TV especially. There is a lot of focus on Syd and Melb and an inflated focus on the criminal - that would make anyone think we’re living in Gotham City 🙄 then there’s odd stories from the US mixed in. No balance. Less of the inane reports of planes landing on US freeways and breaking news on robots in China. I’d rather hear more about the happenings in my own country to inform when voting. More news from WA, NT, TAS etc…please. I don’t like ABC sorry.
For real I am not hearing of any such issues via friends or family either including workplaces. Yet the media is saying there’s tonnes of crime everywhere…
EDIT: Pretty convinced now it’s due to the election. Scaremongering in the media. They’d have you think Melbourne’s crime was up there with New York or LA. It’s probably not even up with Brisbane’s 😂

My Nanna was from Rabat and was born around 1915. She sewed beautifully and made wonderful clothes and stylish coats for my mother and siblings. I’m wondering if any historians/anthropologists or anyone knows about whether girls undertook sewing lessons back in the era of the 1920’s or 30’s or how it is that she might have developed such a fine skill? I live in Australia and didn’t get to see her much and my mum didn’t know the history either….

From what I’ve been reading unlicensed venues and under-the-table alcohol sales tend to get shut down pretty quickly. Enforcement is strong, communities themselves don’t tolerate it and so forth.
Seems to me these perpetrators are beating a dead dog…
