Why is it that in FF romances, one of the characters is usually more masculine?

My guess is that it could have something to do with the fact that a lot of dark romance readers are straight women. If that’s the case, they may already be less likely to seek out FF romance, and even less likely to be interested in a dynamic where both characters are feminine.

And just to be clear, I’m not judging anyone who likes FF romances with a more masculine character. I’m genuinely curious as to why it’s so hard to find romances between two feminine characters.

Books where he truly hates her?

I’ve read several books where he hated her in the beginning but felt sexually attracted to her at the same time and later confesses how he’s always loved her.

I’m looking for something where there’s no sexual attraction whatsoever. Just pure hatred on his end, but she still loves him and he finds it pathetic.

Eventually something will happen that makes him love her, but there’ll be no confession of him always loving her, because he really didn’t.

Horror novels set during war?

I’ve always been a fan of World War II novels and I love both historical fiction and nonfiction, but I’ve never read anything set during a war that’s also considered horror. If anyone knows of any books like this, I’d love some recommendations!

Books with somnophilia?

I’m imagining something where she wakes up smiling because he was fingering her in her sleep.

Is this a weird thing to ask for?

Any horror books with a dystopian setting?

I vaguely remember reading The Giver by Lois Lowry back in middle school, and I really enjoyed it. Lately I’ve been thinking that its dystopian setting would make an incredible horror novel. Does anyone know of any horror books with a similar atmosphere or premise?

The way my intermediate family allowed my extended family to “punish” me will forever haunt me.

I try everyday to get over the worst parts of my childhood, although it’s very hard to randomly have visions of my intermediate family laughing and encouraging the extended family to do those things to me.

I can’t say what it was they did, I don’t know how many years it’ll take to at least be able to talk about it, but it just really hurts every single day even though it’s been years.

Although I will say it was very rare for things to get physical, but it was so, so degrading and I still feel just as powerless as I did in those moments when I think about after all this time.

What’s the most disturbing psychological horror you’ve ever read?

I’m looking for some recommendations! I really enjoyed Exquisite Corpse by Poppy Z. Brite, but I’m hoping to find something that leans more into psychological horror and dread rather than just shock value.

Does anyone else find pet names a little excessive?

I don’t know. Some of them are cute, but I can never get past the ones that start with “little.”

Haunting Adeline was not what I expected.

I picked up Haunting Adeline a while back after seeing hundreds of people rave about it online, so I figured I’d see what all the hype was about.

About a hundred pages in, I was honestly underwhelmed. The writing wasn’t bad, but it didn’t live up to what I’d expected given the book’s popularity.

Then the story took a turn, and not in a good way.

I’d already read the trigger warnings before starting the book, so I wasn’t surprised when I reached the scene where Zade watches sex traffickers torture a little boy. What genuinely shocked me, though, was when they cut him open and drank his blood.

Isn’t that essentially the blood libel myth?

For anyone unfamiliar with the term, blood libel is an antisemitic conspiracy theory that falsely accuses Jews of murdering non-Jewish children to use their blood in religious rituals or for consumption.

And honestly, the whole thing just feels very QAnon inspired, especially when you look at the blood libel parallels.

The author has denied intentionally incorporating QAnon themes into the story, but I have a hard time believing the similarities are purely coincidental, especially when the traffickers are given Jewish-sounding surnames. Taken together, it reads less like an original conspiracy and more like QAnon fan fiction.

I wanted to mention this because I still constantly see people praising the book and recommending it online, yet I rarely see anyone acknowledge this aspect of it.

Pitch black erotic horror?

I loved Exquisite Corpse but I’m looking for something darker. What’s the most pitch black book you’ve read? Bonus points if it’s labeled erotica.

What’s your ideal preference for dark romance characters?

Has dark romance changed these past few years?

It may just be me, but dark romance seemed much more versatile up until around 2021, but now a lot of the newer publishes feel like repeats of each other.

Is this just me? I’ve never been an avid dark romance reader, so it may be a misconception on my end.

I’m too afraid to eat.

This isn’t anything of not liking my body and starving myself to lose weight. No. Whenever my period starts I’m unable to digest most food and when I try and eat something I’ll just be in agonizing pain and will start throwing up.

My guardians don’t trust in medical science nor believe in disease and therefore refuse to let me see a doctor telling me there’s nothing wrong with me and that I want attention. I find that accusation to be insane because why would I willingly put myself through this? It doesn’t even make sense.

I barely eat anymore because my periods have always been unpredictable so there’s no telling when it’ll start, and if there’s anything in my stomach and I suddenly get my period? I’ll be in all kinds of pain for that entire week. When I haven’t eaten and get my period, I usually feel fine, or at least not in pain.

I’ll be eighteen pretty soon, but as of now I’m still unable to see a doctor and be treated without parental consent, so there’s not much I can do, but it’s becoming more and more noticeable. I was never anywhere near overweight at all, but I wasn’t pencil thin either, and people have been pointing out I look like I’ve lost a lot of weight.

I just wanted to talk about this.

Why in sapphic books do authors make one of the characters masculine?

I feel like it has to do with the audience of dark romance and romance in general being mostly straight women who are interested in a dominant male character and don’t usually focus on female characters, which is why sapphic books already aren’t as popular here.

However when I do see a sapphic book being mentioned, one of the characters is described to be masculine and possesses all the characteristics of your typical dark romance man, which I suppose is entirely reasonable given the genres audience, but I can’t help but wonder if that defeats the purpose of sapphic.

By no means am I judging anyone’s preferences and am well aware a lot of real life lesbians have a more masculine personality. I’m not even too into guys myself, but I can’t imagine liking a woman who has all the attributes a man does. Isn’t that pretty much the same thing as liking a man apart from having different reproductive organs?
