Non-EU visa: timeline after additional questions from Bern Migration Office?

Hi everyone,

I’m a non-EU incoming exchange student at UniBE, and my visa D application has been processing since May.

The Bern Migration Office recently asked about my arrival, internship dates, accommodation and funding, and then requested my rental contract. I submitted everything immediately.

Has anyone reached this stage recently? Approximately how long did it take after sending these documents to receive the visa authorization?

My planned arrival is 1 September, so I’m trying to understand the remaining timeline. Thank you!

Visa D still pending two weeks before required arrival, recent experience with Bern/UniBE or similar?

Hi everyone,

I know Reddit cannot decide my immigration case, but I would really appreciate hearing about recent experiences with the Bern authorities and UniBE.

I’m a Brazilian Master’s student coming to the University of Bern for a six-month research exchange at ARTORG. I submitted my national Visa D application at the Swiss Consulate in São Paulo on 19 May, and the Bern authorities confirmed receiving it on 29 May.

The case was initially handled as a research internship/work-related stay. In July, UniBE formally admitted me through its Worldwide Exchange programme instead. My nomination, Mobility Online application and Learning Agreement were completed and accepted on 21 July, and UniBE International told me that they had contacted migration about my visa.

I still have no authorization. The Bern migration office says the case is being processed, while the consulate says that the canton is responsible and that the original documentation may still make the application appear work-related.

I started the process more than three months in advance specifically to avoid this situation, so honestly, having no clear status with roughly two weeks remaining is making me quite anxious. My Brazilian public research fellowship requires me to be physically in Bern by 1 September, otherwise the fellowship will be cancelled. UniBE’s Introduction Week starts on 7 September.

Has anyone recently experienced something similar in Bern, especially a case that changed from an internship/work route to exchange-student status?

Did it help more to call UniBE International and ask them to follow up institutionally, or to call the City of Bern migration office directly? How long did it take between cantonal authorization and the consulate issuing the Visa D?

Brazilian citizens can normally enter the Schengen area as visitors for up to 90 days in a 180-day period. I understand that this does not authorize me to begin studying or working. Still, has anyone in a pending Visa D situation received explicit written permission from the Swiss authorities to enter only as a visitor, wait without starting the exchange, and then leave to have the Visa D issued? Or were you specifically instructed not to travel at all?

I will follow the instructions given by UniBE, the migration office and the consulate. I’m mainly looking for recent timelines and experiences so I can understand what may happen over the next two weeks.

Thank you.

Non-EU UniBE exchange student still waiting for Visa D, recent Bern timelines?

Hi everyone,

I’m an incoming exchange student from Brazil, joining UniBE/ARTORG for a six-month research stay.

I submitted my Visa D application on 19 May, and the Bern authorities confirmed receiving it on 29 May. Due to an administrative change, my UniBE Worldwide Exchange admission was only finalized on 21 July. UniBE International has contacted migration, but I still have no authorization.

I need to be physically in Bern by 1 September because of a firm funding deadline, and Introduction Week begins on 7 September.

Is anyone else joining UniBE in autumn 2026 and still waiting for their visa? If yours has already been approved, how long did Bern take, and how close to your planned travel date did you receive the decision?

I’m not looking for a way to travel without the required visa, just recent Bern timelines and similar experiences. Thanks!

  • praticam musculação ou outra atividade física com regularidade;
  • já têm alguma noção básica de alimentação;
  • querem ajustar a dieta à rotina, aos treinos e aos próprios objetivos;

  1. A FAPESP liberou o valor exato que constava no despacho?
