Happy halfway day

5 years ago tomorrow, the §5 StAG declaration period went into effect. 5 years from today, the declaration period will be closed. Be sure to get those declarations submitted. The official wait time for approval is 3 years due to the backlog, and it looks like it will become longer. I would also like to thank u/maryfamilyresearch and u/football_and_beer for their help in this subreddit.

NY Consulate Appointment Issues

I'm trying to schedule an appointment for my §5 StAG declaration at the Generalkonsulat New York. I have looked on the website at exactly 6pm ET during the weekdays and nothing pops up. Is it just that everything is booked and I have to come back to the website in a week or two for an appointment in September?

Do I need to prove my grandfather's nationality?

For context, I'm eligible for german citizenship via §5 StAG as my father's descendant. When my father was born, my grandmother was still a german citizen. My grandfather was a german citizen who naturalized in the US before my father was born. Even though I'm not inheriting citizenship through my grandfather, does the BVA still care about his documents for proof that I never got it through him?

What should my last name be?

I'm trying to obtain german citizenship by descent, and I was thinking about changing back my last name to its original form. My family's last name was originally Müller, but when my grandfather immigrated to the US, he changed it to Muller rather than Mueller. My US passport currently says Muller, so would it be an issue if I had a german passport that said Müller rather than Muller since Müller is interpreted as Mueller?

Questions about §5 StAG application

For context, I plan on applying at Generalkonsulat New York.

I'm still in the process of obtaining documents. I'm pretty sure they will have the proper stamp certification, but just in case they don't, would I be able to get it done right on the spot or need to schedule a separate appointment?

I also heard from somewhere that they might want me to bring my own photocopies alongside my original & official documents. It would be tough since there are a lot of documents, and I heard they might want more than one copy for each one. Can someone verify this?

I live in River Vale. I saw several police cars flooring it full blown sirens in the direction of Harrington Park. Later on I spotted an ambulance too. I lived in Bergen County my whole life and it created a scene that I'm not used to seeing. It must've been big if River Vale had to respond. Does anyone know what happened?
