How would an earth-like planet be different if it were orbiting a star-black hole binary system?

I'm messing around with the idea of a planet that orbits both a star and a black hole that are in a stable orbit around each other. How would this affect conditions on the planet? Would the day/night cycle have strange quirks, or would a small black circle just periodically cross in front of the sun?

Assuming the planet is in a stable orbit in a habitable zone, and ignoring the circumstances that would lead to this configuration (assume all objects were magically placed in an ideal scenario), would there really be any differences on the planet?

If the Earth was orbiting a binary system of a star and a small black hole, how would it affect the planet?

If a star and black hole achieved a stable orbit around each other, what affects would that have on an earth-like planet orbiting them? Would it give off gravitational waves, or crazy radiation? Would a stable orbit for the earth look very different from our current elliptical one? Would day and night change?

Could a star, a black hole, and an exoplanet exist in the same solar system?

Ignore the circumstances that would lead to this configuration, but could there be a binary system with both a star and a black hole at its center, with at least one exoplanet in a stable orbit around them?

Is there any other configuration that would work? Are there black holes small enough to orbit stars?

Donutworld now has healing magic. It's in the bones.

In addition to the two divine metals found in the ground of Donutworld, there is a third divine metal, created by the eldritch god that originally sewed life on the planet, Typhon. It's called typhonite, and it lives in the bones of Limbowalkers- those who have received a boon from Typhon. Their skeletons are dark grey, with a rainbow iridescent shimmer.

When injested or stabbed into the body, typhonite triggers the same wild bodily growth that the god uses to create new life. It can heal injuries, regrow limbs, or if uncontrolled, will mutate and overwhelm the body into an abomination.

Limbowalkers are rare, and killing them is always dangerous, so their bones are an extremely scarce resource for the few who actually know about the healing properties. A limbowalker can amputate and use their own bones to heal themselves, but obviously this is a last resort. They'd rather steal them from other limbowalkers if available.

Any questions or glaring issues?

For a while, I've wanted there to be a method of magical healing in Donutworld, as a tribalpunk setting with lots of hunting, wild monsters and warring nations.

On the one hand, recovering from injuries quickly is a way to move the plot along and keep characters in the story. But on the other hand, healing that's too convenient or powerful would make injuries meaningless and remove tension. I think I've found a good middle ground and wrapped it into the existing lore nicely :)

New to growing, something's eating them? HELP

A few weeks ago

Now.

Heyo, new grower here. I've got a well established plant and have been trying to propagate ~100 paddles to give away as wedding gifts.

It started out well and almost all of them took, see first picture. That was a few weeks ago. I haven't been paying too much attention to them, other than moving them out of excessive rain so they don't drown, and keeping them in the sun.

But as of now, most of them have disappeared. It looks like something is eating them. Not sure if it's insects or snails- does anyone have tips for keeping pests away, or any other advice when I try this again?

Funny, only slightly tragic dr's visit

Depression has been kicking my butt the last few weeks. I've had it all my life, so I'm used to the feeling, but this was a burning-behind-the-eyes, hate-absolutely-everyone, constant panic attacks level of depression that's unusual even for me.

I scheduled a drs appointment to up my meds, and the first thing the doctor says after going down my list of meds is "did you read the back of that new one?"

I had started a new allergy med a month ago and apparently it's famous for making depressive symptoms worse. Welp. It's a weight lifted off my chest to know this terrible feeling was chemically induced, but damn I feel silly for not reading the side effects earlier.

Moral of the story- read your side effects!

If there was a fan made MM sequel, do you think having time loop mechanics would be essential?

Hypothetically, if someone was doing a design project imagining a sequel to Majora's Mask, set years after the original with new races and a more open world like modern Zeldas, do you think it would be important to do the time loop idea again? Or would you rather see a more traditional progression of time like other games? Something in between?

What if Link had a Twili Mask in MM?

I'm doing a design project as a sequel/reimagining of MM, and the Twili are one of the races I'm featuring. Think I captured the aesthetic?

Does the Clock Tower actually make sense or not?

Overthinking the function of a clock tower from a 25 year old nintendo game? No place for that but reddit!

Underneath the tower, there is a waterwheel turned by the same underground river that can be seen in various places in Clock Town. The waterwheel is connected via gears to rotate a large vertical shaft.

This central shaft's rotation is transferred via three gears to the two wheels on the outside of the tower. Though the graphics are hard to decipher here, I believe the intent is that the two smaller wheels have teeth that grab teeth on the back side of the clock face. Since the wheels are facing opposite directions, one on the left side pushes the clock face up, and the right pushes it down, causing it to rotate clockwise (duh).

Noteworthy is that the clock does not have hands, but instead the outer ring rotates in discreet movements to track seconds, and the inner face rotates discreetly to track 12 hours. It's not clear where this discreet motion could be coming from, nor how the central face gets rotated. Though there is enough room in the tower to hold additional mechanisms not visible in the game. The clock face also has an inset circular panel that flips to reveal either a sun or moon, to indicate AM or PM.

I'd love to see what medieval bearings they theoretically rigged up to let the clock face rotate freely lol.

This is all fine and dandy, excusing the fact that the waterwheel would move very inconsistently, making it terrible for telling time. A real clock would get around this by using that energy to prime an entrapment, like a heavy weight on a pulley, that would then pull downward at a constant force.

At first I though perhaps the giant ball at the top was an entrapment, but it seems to have no function related to the clock mechanism. Instead, it rotates, seemingly as a continuation of the central shaft. It also, inexplicably, functions as a lighthouse at night. There is no visible indication of how it shines a light, and I attribute that to a messy design/modeling process.

Also, the fact that it seems to be a massive stone structure that fully rotates would immensely slow down the whole motion, while adding nothing in the way of entrapment or speed moderation.

The stone ball is connected to the clock face as they move together during the festival of time, sliding upward and rotating 90° back so the clock face is parallel to the ground. In this configuration, a staircase is revealed in the front 2nd story of the tower, allowing people to walk up the inside of the tower to the top.

I believe the sun/moon panel on the clock face functions as a trapdoor, allowing folks to emerge from inside the tower to on top of the clock face. This is the spot Link stands on when appearing for the encounter with Skull Kid.

All in all, I give the clock section an 8/10, with a fully modeled power source, central shaft, and multiple gearings to achieve the motion of a clock face. Points off for not showing some mechanisms and having seemingly no entrapment to regulate the motion.

I can only give the lighthouse / viewing platform a 4/10 at best. The stone ball has no reason to exist, has no visible indication of its function, and creates an incredibly unstable lever when it falls to the side. Very clever symbolism to have people literally stand on the clock face while beseeching the goddess of time in the heavens though.

The whole structure would get a 10/10 if the stone ball had been modeled as a light house, and if started the cycle being extended up, gradually sliding down in a screw motion over the course of three days. Then it could act like an entrapment, being reset using the water wheel. If the clock face were higher up on the tower, then the top structure would not be sticking out far to the side when in festival configuration. This would make that mode much more stable looking.

"Trying too hard" should be celebrated, not a red flag

I can't stand any situation where someone shows up with honest effort, and they are avoided or belittled for trying too hard.

Getting dressed up for a date, asking questions, showing interest, offering to help someone who needs it, basically just being earnest is often seen as inferior to being nonchalant or aloof. You're better off impressing people by pretending you don't care, which is toxic af.

Oh, someone is acting in line with their values and goals? They're a straight shooter who doesn't play mind games or make you guess their intentions? They're doing what they can to make a good impression? God I wish everyone in my life acted like that! Green flags all around!

I had another Majora's Mask dream

I've got a particular flavor of "game design" dream where I dream up new and different parts to familiar games. And since MM takes up a disproportionate amount of my silly brain's neurons, I've actually had two in the last month or so.

First, I dreamt that next to Southern Swamp, there was a well manicured forest of giant lime green trees. The monkeys that lived in them were like the monkeys from the swamp but much bigger and taller, with vines and moss growing on them.

The curse on this grove was killer plants that grew too fast, and they disturbed the graveyard of these monkeys so you had to deal with coffins entwined in the foliage. The corpses would get puppeteered by vines and jump out at you.

Then last night I dreamt there was a boss fight for breaking the curse and getting the deku mask. You'd fight that giant deku scrub from the cutscene where link gets cursed. It would rise up out of the void and start shooting stinger-tipped vines at you repeatedly. You'd have to carry a torch across lily pads (I know deku link can't carry torches) to a big central bonfire. Then get the boss to shoot its vines into the fire and burn itself to make it vulnerable.

Admittedly that one doesn't feel like an MM boss because it's not very interactive and you'd have only one way of damaging it. Buuuut it was pretty cool for random half remembered dream lol

So the idea is that everything exists in both the physical realm and the astral realm, including your body. The two realms are connected with invisible strings. This magic lets you pull on those strings to summon your astral form into the physical realm. Depending on how you manifest it, you can do different things.

If your two forms overlap, their strength and durability are stacked, meaning you can basically wear your astral form as a shimmering armor.

You can summon it outside your physical body to sense and interact with things from a distance (like astral projecting)

You can also manipulate the flow of energy between the two forms to cool down or heat up your body and the area around you.

The astral form can also change size and even manifest multiple times with training and mastery.

So far I've tried calling it Astral Chi, Astralo, the Astral Forms (where each ability would be a form like a martial art) but none are really sticking. Any name ideas yall? It doesn't have to sound like 'astro', it can be anything
