White peacock

Seen in a German zoo. He and the other peacocks are allowed to freely roam the zoo area, and we were lucky to get this shot. Despite (or because? cannot decide) his lack of colour, it was a really impressive sight!

Seen today in a German zoo. He and all the other peacocks are allowed to freely roam the whole zoo area. We were lucky to get these shots!

As I just learned, this is not an albino bird, it is a special peacock breed! / Edit: Not a breed, it’s a mutation, thanks for the correction! (An albino would have red eyes - he doesn’t.)

Albino peacock

Seen today in a German zoo. He and all the other peacocks are allowed to freely roam the whole zoo area. We were lucky to get these shots!

Edit: I just learned that it is not an albino bird, it is a mutation that lacks pigmentation in the feathers. An albino would have red eyes. Sorry for the confusion!

Silent Corner Study - Seaside edition

This is my version, completely remodeled to a „Cottage by the sea“-study. A light and breezy design compared to the dark brown original.
(Sorry for the different lighting, I couldn’t decide whether to use the sun or the shadow pictures.)

I am especially proud of the modern desk lamp… the other one was just too old fashioned. I also love the globe, it’s basically a blind and painted marble. I bought the black glass octopus about 25 years ago, and he has finally found his forever home. The dolphin is actually a magnet- I just love to re-purpose stuff in nooks!

Real carpet (I can lift the piece over the light button), seaside trinkets everywhere, postcard pics from Mallorca, Gran Canaria and the Carmargue, various plants, a beautiful view and I just want to sit down there to do my favourite hobby…

Warum/woher könnt ihr eigentlich Kurrent lesen?

Ich lese hier schon seit Monaten mit und bin immer wieder fasziniert, was ihr alles lesen könnt, insbesondere wenn es nur einzelne Worte ohne Zusammenhang oder andere Schriftbeispiele sind.

Ich selbst kann ein wenig Sütterlin. Meine Mutter hatte es noch in der Schule als erste Schreibschrift gelernt, und wir hatten Briefe von Verwandten, die ich als Teenager lesen können wollte, also hat sie mir das Alphabet aufgeschrieben. In der Schule hatte ich eine Freundin, die auch Sütterlin konnte, so hatten wir eine Geheimschrift für unsere Zettelchen unterm Tisch. Ich erinnere mich auch, dass unser - junger - Lehrer mal einen abgefangen hatte, ihn aber nicht lesen konnte. Das ist Jahrzehnte her, und was man nicht übt, vergisst man. Ich freue mich aber immer, wenn ich hier etwas entziffern kann, auch wenn es zumeist schon jemand beantwortet hat.

Warum und woher könnt ihr Kurrent lesen, und das teilweise auf diesem Niveau? Ich meine, nicht saubere Schriften, oder gar Einträge in alten Kirchenbüchern oder Altdeutsch in heute unüblicher Schreibweise, bei denen ich zu 80% völlig verloren bin? Interesse, Verwandte, Ahnenforschung oder gar beruflich? Habt ihr Geschichten in Zusammenhang mit Kurrentschrift?

Ich finde das faszinierend - erzählt mal!

Modern desk lamp

I am currently re-modelling the Silent Corner Study kit to a more modern version and felt that the provided desk lamp was too old fashioned. I came up with this instead: A paper clip, a shiny button, a rubber cushion thingy from an old pair of earphones, a bit of polymer clay and colour, and lots of patience…
I didn’t want to resort to polymer clay as a lamp top and tried various other things that wouldn’t stick, so… yeah, but I really like it!
