Am I the only one losing sleep over my Vibram soles committing eco-crimes one step at a time?

So we all know Leave No Trace, right? Pack it in, pack it out, don’t disturb the soil crust, blah blah. Cool. Love that for us.

But nobody talks about the fact that our $200 trail runners are basically confetti cannons of microplastic, quietly seeding every switchback from here to Kilimanjaro with tiny bits of themselves. Every step is a tiny act of littering that we’ve all just agreed to ignore because the shoe is “on” us and not “left behind.”

I did the math (I did not do the math) and conservatively my pair has shed enough rubber over 400 trail miles to reconstitute one (1) sad flip-flop. Multiply that by every hiker on the PCT and we’re basically leaving a plastic breadcrumb trail from Mexico to Canada.

Do I need to Leave No Trace my own shoe rubber? Should I be carrying a tiny broom? Is “biodegradable soles” a market someone’s sitting on? Asking the real questions here.

Anyway see you on the trail, quietly polluting it with my footwear like a responsible outdoorsperson.

Sick olive green Gladiator lifted, red wheels on what look like 37s in Toledo, Ohio

Are you on this sub? I was behind you today in my 41 Green Gadiator. I feel like I’ve seen that truck on YouTube as well.

If you’re on here, keep up the good work. It looks incredible.

Onboard air. Finally using a little bit of my bed Molle panels.

I run Billie bars and a tonneau 100% of the time so the Molle was a pretty big waste of money. At least it gave me a spot to mount this ARB mini.

Bestop Sunrider issue. Fabric edge not going into track when closing.

I’ve reached out to Bestop, and I’m waiting for an answer but I thought I’d ask here in case anyone has had the same issue and found a solution.

When closing the passenger side edge doesn’t go into the rail. It wasn’t doing this at first but after a month it does it every time.

Update to my Bilstein 5100 post. Off-road performance.

I’ll keep this one short. Spent the morning at Bundy Hill off-road Park in Jerome Michigan. I’ve been here a couple times previously with this Jeep and the stock shocks. The 5100s significantly improved the feel, performance, and my level of confidence when offloading. Everything felt more deliberate and precise. I’m seriously impressed with the off-road capabilities of the gladiator in general.

Bilstein 5100s initial impressions

A couple weeks ago I posted about the bouncy ride I was experiencing in my 2026 Willys. Some research lead to the purchase of Bilstein 5100s as a relatively inexpensive upgrade.

As I was asking further questions, a number of people stated that the ride quality of the Bilsteins was harsh and even unbearable.

I got them installed last night. An easy process even without removing the wheels.

I’ve been driving around for about 90 minutes. Paved roads, gravel roads, and some dirt farm roads. The ride quality is definitely different. No longer does it feel like a lumbering 1978 Cadillac Deville. I can sense small bumps and imperfections in the road more than I could with the red shocks, but I wouldn’t describe it as harsh at all. Firm and with proper damping is how I would describe the ride. No more repeated bouncing after speed bumps or undulations in the road. Noticeably reduced body roll in turns, and It doesn’t rock back and forth after rolling over a bump on one side of the vehicle. Overall I’m extremely happy with them. I’ll do some trail driving soon and I’m confident they’ll perform better than the stock shocks based on my initial impressions.

Legitimate alternatives to VSO for filing claims?

Is there a legitimate, low cost, service that can help me with locating medical records and assist with my claim? My VSO is worthless. VA couldn’t find my service records, I was able to get one inpatient record and I have two outpatient records that I, or they, can’t seem to find. I have a claim in for Tinnitus (I know), hearing loss, L&R knees, and thumb. The latter three had surgeries while active. They scheduled the hearing test right away but are giving me a hard time on the joints because they couldn’t find the records. I’m sure I’ll get an appointment for my left knee now that I have the inpatient records, but the right knee and thumb are still outstanding. I could use some help.

Bouncy rear end and my planned path to a solution. 26 Willys. 5100s? Pic for views.

I use my 26 Willys 70/20/10, Daily Driver/Hauling camping gear for my family/off-roading. It has a 1.5” TF leveling kit.

I noticed a decent amount of sag in the back when hauling our camping gear which I solved with Sumo Springs. They work okay when loaded up but I don’t like how they feel when unloaded and I don’t like that they limit articulation when wheeling. I have Air Lift 1000 bags on standby.

I just ordered Bilstein 5100s based on some research because I’ve noticed the back end is quite bouncy loaded and unloaded. I’m hoping these along with the air bags will solve my problems. Has anyone gone with a similar solution? If you have, are you happy with it?

Stock Willys Destination M/Ts to Baja Boss 255/85s, worth it?

I have 5k miles on my 2026 Willys with the TF Leveling pucks. I like the ties but can’t help but feel they look a little small, pic for reference. I like the idea of using my stock wheels with the Baja Boss A/T 255/85s. I may also put a 1/2” spacer in the back because I am loading it up frequently and would like a little extra back there along with the sumo springs I installed.

TL;DR Is upgrading to the 255/85 Baja Boss’s worth it with only 5k miles on these M/Ts? Is there much of an improvement in off road performance going with the slightly bigger tire? How about on-road? I’m sure they’d be quieter.

Reliable place to purchase Laird BB4502NS?

There a a number of sites that list it but many of them seem a bit sketchy. I tried to order it from Amazon and they shipped me BB4502NL, the one without the spring base, twice.

What are some reliable sites to order from?

How much left in them?

When is the right time to replace boots? These are so comfortable but the sole is beginning to become a trip hazard. With a little shoe goo do you think I could do one more PCT in them?

Vehicle antenna question

Hi all. I’m working on dialing in my vehicle antenna and I’d like a review of my plans.

I have this antenna and this mount and I plan on gluing a 10” diameter 1/16” thick steel plate on the inside lid of the case pictured. Then mounting the magnetic antenna base with the antenna on the top of the case. Id appreciate your thoughts on the suggested arrangement. I know there are better solutions like mounting the antenna to the middle of the hood, but I don’t want to do that.

Emphasis on kitchen setups. Why? Internet clout?

I’m noticing a heavy emphasis on extravagant kitchen setups. So much so that it seems to sacrifice storage space and vehicle capabilities. I get that overlanding facilitates comfort at the campsite but it’s like these setups are essentially Texas BBQ restaurants on wheels for internet clout. Thoughts?

Maybe I’m just mad that I couldn’t fit my XL Big Green Egg in my rig for some sick IG reels.

My “successful” Firestone airbag install.

Dropped the axle and removed the springs. Getting the bags in was no problem. Aired the bags off the vehicle with the ridiculously stiff and coiled hoses to make sure there were no leaks, all good. Put the springs back in, attached the hoses and routed the lines. Air up again, driver’s side is leaking profusely at the bag/connector area. Take the connector off, cut the line and reattach the connector, still leaking. Swap the connectors, still leaking. Become so enraged because I need to drive somewhere this afternoon so I cut them out. I had everything reassembled and didn’t want to pull the springs again.

Stupid waste of money on my part I know but I was so pissed off.

Sumo springs ahead…

Going to be installing these soon. I’d rather not take the springs out. For those that have installed these, what’s the best way to go about it? Not that it looks difficult but is there anything that makes the job easier?
