Leasing Lessons Learned

A few days ago I brought home a new Polestar 4 on a lease. This was my first time leasing a vehicle, and I definitely made a few mistakes along the way. Here is what I would do differently, next time.

When dealing with the Sales Rep, the focus is on the high-level lease terms. How long is the lease, how many miles per year and what the monthly payments will be.

When you sit down with the Finance Rep to sign the documents, there are *many* other terms and fees that you must agree to, and are included in your final Lease Agreement. These fees and terms are often presented to you in a specific sequence, designed to rush you along and get you to agree to things as they are presented to you.

My strong advice is to ask them to send you a draft of the final lease agreement prior to arriving at the dealership. Look at every fee and every term. Ask questions if something doesn't make sense to you.

When you are presented with documents to sign, compare what you are signing with the draft you were given previously.

For instance, it didn't occur to me that the fee for each mile that I go over my limit is $.25 per mile. I guess I should have asked about that! Also, I learned that there is a $450 "Vehicle Turn in Fee" which is probably negotiable.

Be careful out there!

"Lightning" is essentially metallic white

All the photos that Polestar has on its website of their "Lightning" colored P4 have considerably more silver in them than reality. Here is my lightning model in front of a silver 2015 Dodge Durango. It's essentially white. It gets a little darker in dimmer light, but most people would still call it a white car.

SD Card installation

I recorded this video showing my installation of the SD Card for storing the dashcam videos locally. It's a bit of a pain to get the tiny card into the hidden slot.

Parked car overheating due to high ambient temps

I came outside to find the hazard lights blinking on my Polestar 2 (2024), which I haven't driven since yesterday. The dashboard displayed a "Cooling infotainment system" message, but the infotainment system was still functioning. There weren't any fans running on the car. I was able to turn off the hazards by just pressing the button on the center console. I'm surprised that they were activated. Must related to the extremely high temps in my area (around 95F degrees in the Greater New York City area). I rolled down the windows and moved the car to a shady spot in my driveway.

Brussels was more than I expected

Thanks Goose for scheduling a show in a city that I never had on my list, but am forever grateful for visiting. Brussels had much more to offer than I expected. Not sure my brain has yet to recover from riding an e-bike across cobblestones for a couple hours on Monday, but when it does I hope it retains some memories of the Magritte Museum, the Jazz Festival in the Grand Place, the Cathedral of St. Gudula (it took 700 years to build!), buckets of mussels from Chez Leon (really, all of the food we had was very delicious), the street musicians everywhere, the chocolate, the waffles, the Smurfs, the graffiti and of course the little old bronze boy pissing at the passing tourists, the perfect expression of "Belgianness."
