you think my manager wanted me out?

I quit my Sam’s Club job today. My hours kept getting cut — first to **1 day a week, then to nothing for weeks with only a couple random days**, and eventually I was completely off the schedule.

I went in today to tell my manager I was quitting. They were in a meeting, so I waited almost 30 minutes. A team lead was sitting in the office. When my manager came out, I heard the team lead say, **“There he is.”**

My manager came over and said she needed to talk to an associate. I said, **“Wait, this isn’t going to take long,”** and then I explained that because of the lack of hours and everything, I decided to move on to different opportunities.

She said, **“I understand,”** and then **“I’m so sorry.”**

Do you think she was genuinely sorry about my hours being cut, or does this interaction make it seem like she wanted me out anyway? What do you think?

Work meeting the other day.

New ASM is talking and says “if you’re on you’re break and you hear a call go through for your department, you can take the call and then extent your break for however long that call was for”. I’ve been in retail long enough to know that’s illegal. Our breaks are our own whether paid or unpaid. I’m worried some of the junior employees would take it to heart and do this thinking they’d get brownie points or something. Should I say something to the manager (who wasn’t at the store meeting that day)?
Edit: we’re in Oregon and labor laws here says all paid breaks must be free of work and any work done during an unpaid lunch means the entire 30 minutes must be paid as work time.

Beginner in retail and oh my god I feel so guilty (sorry if I shouldn’t be posting this here)

Basically, I’m a teenager who just recently got a job at a quiet pet shop. I probably only have a few days of experience being a cashier but it was smooth sailing. However, just yesterday an older woman purchased 12 euro worth of items, and I was so stuck to my default lines that when she layed by card and asked if the payment when through, I said yes, especially since it had always went through. She leaves with her stuff and next thing I know, I realise the payment processing is still loading, and then ‘error’. I realised I had let a customer leave without paying and oh my god it’s such a bad feeling while I’m still new.

Just had to vent my bad lmao. I literally am so guilty. and yes, I told nobody 😭 How bad is this of a fuck up?

I think my manager is attempting to fire me.

I recently began working at Hollister Co again, part-time as I returned to college. I did not return to HCO to move-up the leadership ladder, I simply did it to help financially on the side.

I was hired again, happy to be back - no, not the best job but situational-wise it was a move I made. My boyfriend also applied, and was turned-down by the assistant manager. I understand this, it could be a conflict of interest. It wasn’t a big deal.

I worked one shift last week (first one). I provided my best customer service. I had families laughing, thanking me, and our mall felt to have a heartbeat again. It was am amazingly fun shift - I had horrible ADHD, and retail helps me like a duck in water, using my ADHD to direct towards providing great customer service (not to sound arrogant).

During the shift, a young girl was dancing in a fitting room (next to her parents). I smiled, seeing anyone happy enough to dance in a world where nobody wants to be themselves warms my heart. I told the young girl, “I’m sorry if I’ve embarrassed you, don’t ever stop doing what you love because someone’s watching.” During the shift, I asked my assistant manager about her college pursuit - as I am in college too. I asked her how long her she the store manager have worked together etc. After my shift I said, “thank you for giving me this opportunity, I’m extremely grateful to be back at Hollister, and it warms my heart”.

Today, my second shift, the air felt cold and tense. My manager was telling me to do things in a passive aggressive manner. I shrugged it off, often times this is normal in a new work environment. Towards the end of my shift, I helped a mother and daughter find what they wanted. They were ready to checkout, however i am not register trained yet, so I got my assistant manager. The mother continued conversation with me during the transaction. After the customer left, my AM looked at the SM and said, “He didn’t even let me get a word in”.

At the end of my shift - the store manager asked to speak with me. I knew it wasn’t going to be positive, she was passive aggressive with me throughout my whole shift.

My manager BOMBARDED me with so many things.

-I made the Assistant manager uncomfortable, she thought I said SHE made my heart warm, but I said returning to HCO made my heart warm. She felt I made her uncomfortable.
-the assistant manager reported it “inappropriate”, that I laughed at the dancing child and apologized for embarrassing her.
-The assistant manager felt I asked too many questions
-The assistant manager felt I inquired about her college pursuit because I wanted her job
-I was told I need to stop saying im grateful to be employed at HCO again
-I was told my boyfriend isn’t allowed to come into the store and wait in the food court
-I was told to tone-down my customer service
-I was told to not talk to a customer if I’m not at the register because I can cause a line to build up
-I was told that I am too old and my peers are young and what was appropriate in 2017 isnt any more
-I was told to stop asking coworkers questions regarding college or anything personal
-I was written up for telling a young girl to never stop dancing because she feels embarrassed - even though her parents did not report this, and they seemed happy and welcomed by my positive interaction - however management misinterpreted it and stretched it, even saying I made her uncomfortable.
-The store manager said she felt I wanted her job too (I DO NOT- I AM IN COLLEGE TO BECOME A TEACHER)

My heart aches over this. I don’t know what to do. I don’t know if the AM just bombarded the SM about me so much that she did this. But it felt like I was being bullied into resigning - less paperwork. I feel that their mind is made up, but to me it is completely inhumane to hit an employee with so much, even to tell them to stop saying that they are grateful. I asked her how I could be written up if the customers seemed happy and made no report. I reminded her that I am gay and I did not say my AM made my heart warm, my return to Hollister did.

I could use any and all advice. I feel contacting HR is a waste - an employee making 11$ an hour is better to dispose of than a manager (no i do not want to be a manager nor was that my intent). But I felt bullied, and I felt it was a cancel-culture tactic that made me look horrible. I am not looking for advice on revenge, I just felt mistreated, and bullied, and my heart hurts. “Justice”, is probably the improper term - but I want to do something because I am wise enough to know that they will fire me or continue to scold me until I resign.

Do I contact HR? Are there laws about this? And is this a new tactic managers use to push employees out? Instead of the paperwork to fire someone, back them into a corner, amplify everything and break them into quitting? If-so, that is absolutely despicable and I’ve never seen it before. Most I’ve seen is a manager cutting hours to an employee they don’t much like - not psychologically breaking them down like what happened today. I felt accused of making a child uncomfortable, sexually harassing my manager, so many things were misinterpreted and it’s heart-wrenching. There may be homophobia involved, my age was mentioned a lot, she may just simply not like me, I don’t know - which is why I’m here today. Sorry for the paragraphs, I am looking for advice. The workforce seems so different now and cancel-culture is a big problem. Thank you in advance, everyone!

The 'Tell me about yourself" question

I have my first ever interview tomorrow for a sales associate job at a fancy soap type of shop and i have literally no idea how to answer this. I have never had a job before and I'm not in school. I feel like it would look weird just to share hobbies but i have nothing else to really talk about.

Gap interview

Hey! I have an upcoming interview at Gap for a seasonal sales associate position. I was told that they're looking to fill a position primarily for the morning hours (6:00 AM - 10:00 AM). Does anyone have any interview tips? How should I dress, what sort of questions are they likely to ask, and would it be a group or one-on-one interview. Thanks!

I don’t work at Publix and never have..but should I decide to leave my awesome job I have now for something less physically intensive but not as chill then it would have to be Publix becuase it’s right down the street. For over 10 years all my jobs have been physically intensive jobs like construction, landscaping, trash man you know the 💪 stuff. So just wondering what position I would be best suited for.. is all. Thanks! 🙏** **

Fraud?

I have discovered that a certain Dept in the grocery retail store that I work for is scanning out old product as a donation when it isn’t getting donated. Well, they do donate lots of product, but some stuff cannot be donated as it is not fit to be eaten and is thrown out or it’s decent and they decide to cook it and eat it themselves. I was told they do this to pad their numbers in their department so there is less waste/loss showing on paper. This seems like Fraud to me, not only within the department but also within the company. This is a major food chain. So, is this Fraud? Should I look the other way? I’m kind of leaning towards reporting it, although at this point, I’m not really sure to who.

ugh I'm so annoyed can someone tell me what's going on? no contact after 2nd-ish interview

Hi all, I've been desperately looking for a job & finally got a call back from target.

I had an open avail when I applied but while I was waiting (was waiting for a month or so) I decided to go back to school and now I'll be going to school about 3days a week - not all day tho.

I did the recorded interview and few days later I got a call back from a team leader but I missed the phone call unfortunately and I tried calling back multiple times trying multiple departments and they did not answer.

Since the target was 5mins away I went there to speak to the team leader and the conversation went well.

They told me though they needed me for sunday (when I have class), they can work around my schedule and they said they'll have me work from next week & that I'll get an offer email the next day. So technically I did get a verbal offer.

It's day 2 since we spoke and I have not gotten any call or offer email and it's starting to drive me crazy. There's no way for me to reach anyone via phone and I don't wanna bother them by walking in again.

Did I mess up? Any advice is appreciated.

Communication struggles

I’ve been working a job at Marshall’s since November of last year and I love the work, hate the people. There is so much gossip between the managers and so much favoritism. I do my job well, clock in and out on time, mind my business, and somehow this one manager cherry picks problems with me despite all of this. I’d like to put in my two weeks not just because of the environment but also because I’m starting my senior year and won’t be able to handle the hours they have me on, on top of homework. How do I put in my two weeks? WorkJam doesn’t seem to have any communication options, is there any way to get a managers email?? I would much rather do this over a private email than over the phone or in person.

One last thing that bothers me is the complete ignorance of scheduling specifications!!! I have told them countless times I cannot work Thursday’s, or any time before 4, and I keep getting scheduled for 9:30 in the morning??? I don’t have a car, and my parents work early hours. There is no other way to get around this rather than calling out last minute and make a fool of myself. It’s exhausting.

moving up to manager but the other staff are more trained than me/ always in charge

So past two months I was informed that I was getting moved up to manager which I agreed too. I was told roughly when my training would start., expect most of the staff in my work seem to have more training than me. At first i was like "whatever it doesn't matter" but now I'm like how come half the staff are trained in things I'm not even trained in yet but I'm the one moving up? I don't understand? Not just this but I always have at least one member of staff in charge over me, which is bizarre because I'm th on who's moving up. Obviously Im not manger yet which I understand but why are other staff being trained in things I need to b trained in and why are they the one in charge of me.

How will I ever be manager when sales assistants are tellin me what do(bossing me around) and they have more management training than me. I was told my training would start this week but I've had zero training yet and I'm still dealing with everyone else in charge of me?

Is it this way everywhere, or just the store where I work?

You get pulled in fifteen different directions to help other departments and then get yelled at for not accomplishing your assigned tasks. I have been offered a position with more responsibility (not management, just another position in addition to the one I already have, and performing this task on different days) and I am hesitant because this seems to happen a lot at my store and people have left because of it.

How bad do i have to be to get fired?

I started working as a cashier for the first time in my life and I messed up yesterday pretty bad and customer left the shop with 30€ worth of items (the card payment didnt go through and the customer left before the machine showed that it didn't go through). Today, I counter wrong again and a customers left with 13,5€ worth of stuff as well as I slightly undercharged a few customers by a few euros.

I've only been working at this store for about three days now and I'm really stressed about whether or not I might get fired for this. My manager was really upset with me so that didn't make it any better.

It's been really tough searching for jobs and it took me an entire month before I found this one. Does anyone maybe have any similar experiences like me?
