Euria...is useless. Worse than useless actually

I think I am officially never using it again. It's not just that it gets things wrong, it's that it so confidently asserts that what is wrong, is correct. Once it even chastised me for trying to correct it, insisting I was wrong when I pointed out its mistake. Worse, it regularly is wrong about Infomaniak's own products, giving just wrong instructions about what I can or can't do. An AI that admits ignorance is fine, but when it confidently asserts false things, it is worse than not using it at all, because you need to spend extra time either following bad information, or verifying that it is wrong.

And it is wrong A LOT

A unreasonably wordy breakdown of my Fastmail vs Infomaniak research that you may not care about...

I am a Fastmail user right now and mostly happy with it. The thing that made me start investigating Infomaniak is the fact Fastmail runs on US servers, and that just bugs me. So I wanted to see if there were compelling European options. I would prefer an EU service, but Switzerland is still independent of US law, so that’s a good start.

I was pleased then to see that this is really a very comprehensive service. In some respects, it blows Fastmail out of the water. Huge value for money (1tb of storage for 22 euro a year is great value just on its own). A productivity suite, cloud drive, a video chat service, and if want it, I guess an AI service too (though not a very good one in my experience so far). It also has a very effective migration tool by connecting directly to Fastmail, and just downloading everything via IMAP. Worked perfectly.

Especially notable, it’s the ONLY service I’ve seen that lets you bring your own domain on the free tier. Every other service makes you pay for that. Plus 20gb mail storage? For FREE!?…phenomenal.

There are a few things that Fastmail still wins on though, and some of them are a real sticking point.

Fastmail has

  • Better organised settings - I figured it out, but damn Infomaniak has a confusing array of settings pages
  • Passkeys: I’m surprised Infomaniak doesn’t support this yet. However since Fastmail still lets you fall back to password, this is more a convenience than it is a real security gain. At least it has TOTP, which is a minimum, but it’ll do.
  • Site hosting: Infomaniak does have this of course, but for an extra cost. I only keep a simple index.html page, which I’d like to keep, but really don’t feel like paying for whole hosting plan for a single html page. I could use another host though.
  • Nameserver configuration: Again Infomaniak does have this, again, extra charge (not much, 1.20 a month, I’d live), or I can just set up all the DNS records at my registrar.
  • This feels almost petty, but it’s a little hill I will stand on. The keyboard shortcut for archiving mail is weirdly complex for an action I probably do more than any other single action. Why is this any more than one single keystroke?
  • Auto-cleaning folders. You can set folders in Fastmail to auto-delete messages older than X days. I use this on several folders with relatively constant streams of email that I don’t need to keep long term. This is very useful, and I would really miss it.
  • Translation that works - I can’t fully credit Fastmail with this, but the plugin I use (Kagi translate) injects a translation button into the FM UI. Infomaniak offers translation, but only for certain languages, and they don’t do the one I need the most (Dutch). Maybe I can convince the Kagi folk to update their plugin to work in Infomaniak.
  • This is a bigger one, because I really value this. Fastmail lets me enable notifications only for VIP contacts. This is a big one…and it might be why I stay with Fastmail. I will never enable notifications for ALL email, but I don’t want to turn it off entirely.

This last one is really the key. I probably could live and adapt for all the rest, but the controlled notifications are critical. Now, Apple Mail app does let me do this still, so I could close that gap, but only by exclusively going to the native Mail app (I can also remap the Archive key). I just…don’t prefer the Apple Mail app. It’s fine, but it feels a bit like a step down.

Still, that’s where I am at. Infomaniak really does offer a lot, above and beyond Fastmail in some ways, for a lot cheaper, and I’d be off USA hosting. It’s just not perfect (and maybe that’s unreasonable to expect, sure). We’ll see. I am forwarding all my email right now, they have a GREAT free tier, so I can let it stew for a bit and see how I feel. I am switching to Apple Mail for a bit, and see how I feel about that. Maybe I’ll make the switch, maybe not.

Euria translation...does it ever work?

I have yet to have Euria translate option work. It either gives me an error, or it gives me "Nothing to translate in this email.", despite the entire email being in a foreign language.

Nothing to translate? THE ENTIRE THING please and thank you. I don't understand under what circumstances I should expect it to do something.

Simple 1 page web site

I am investigating Infomaniak as a possible email and calendaring switch. I have my own domain as well. In addition to that, I don't want a fully hosted website, but I do want just one single index.html page with very basic info about me that I want public. Do I need a full hosting package just for this?

Pith ag turning a TF into lunatic

I've heard both sides of this. If a pit hag makes a lunatic, do you tell the lunatic they are evil, or good? Like "You are a no-dashii, you are X"

Since the token doesn't assert they must believe they are evil, I've seen STs reassert the "good", because that's what the character originally understood themselves to be. On the other hand, we all know a typical lunatic thinks they are evil, but not because the token says so, just because they drew a red token.

I lean to the second scenario, because I've felt a "You think you are evil" is implied by the token, but I can see it argued both ways.

Quick app access

I am just examining Proton Pass to see what it's like (not currently a user). It seems like a very robust and comprehensive app. I am currently contrasting it with 1Password which I am very familiar with. I like the integrated email alias generation particularly.

The one thing I am still looking for, maybe it doesn't exist, is convenient quick access to the app. Like if I need a secure note, or password, credit card number, whatever, just the ability to hit a keyboard combo, and have an app search window pop open.

Also does it only have a Chrome extension? No Safari or Firefox?

Anyone have any idea when Revolut will add Wero/iDeal as a payment option on the revolut.me payment links? I'm in the Netherlands, so no one will give the page the time of day without a Wero payment option, but even beyond, Wero is growing into an EU standard. I find it weird that it's still not available as a payment option.

Income sorter is great, and I think it's a logical minimum feature for all bank apps.

It works, but it's too simplistic. If I put €X into a pocket for eating out, it's because I set €X as my eating out budget. Great. What happens in practice though, is not that I spent exactly X last month. If I was careful, I spent some amount less than X. Let's say this pocket had €53 left in it by my next payday. I was under budget by this amount. What I want then, is to sort X-53 into this pocket. Move X into the pocket as normal, but hold back the current pocket balance, so that I am left once again with X, not X+53.

I have a "Bills" pocket. It contains enough to pay all my monthly bills, but not to the single Euro. My electricity bill is slightly variable, my train bill varies slightly, so there is a bit of a buffer. This is still a budgeting tool. If I am regularly 40-50€ under every month, I don't want a month after month growth of €50 every month in that pocket. I want that X value. Every time.

Now, a SAVINGS pocket, where I put in let's say 200€ every month to save up for a vacation, that's different. In this case, I DO want it to accumulate, but it means pockets need to have a type. They are either for accumulation, or they are for budget
