UA414/05AUG: smoothest diversion experience

I’m a pilot with a different carrier and frequent flier on many airlines. I was on UA414 BOS-DEN on August 5, 2025.

I was enjoying my movie and Recline snack box when the Captain comes on the PA and states there is an issue with the aircraft’s pressurization system. There is technically no issue flying but with this condition, it would not have been possible to continue all the way to Denver, so they elected to divert to Cleveland, hoping they’d have a plane available to help continue our journey.

I don’t know all too much about the Boeing 737, but from my experience with a different airplane, I think the issue was that one of the two Pneumatic Air Conditioning Kits (PACK) stopped working. This PACK gives us the pressurized cabin and temperature. With one inoperative, it was necessary to lower the altitude (25,000 feet in my airplane, unsure in the 737) so we can have the proper pressurization with the remaining PACK. Lower altitude means more fuel consumption, and there wasn’t enough to continue to DEN which prompted the diversion.

It took a bit to finally land in CLE, and we were followed by fire trucks, so I assume the pilots declared some level of emergency (MAYDAY or PANPAN, I assume the latter in this case).

Upon block-in at the gate, we were told we already have a plane ready two gates away. The snack cart was brought out promptly. There was a bit of waiting for final preparation, but we continued our flight with the same passengers, crew, and flight number, landing in Denver only a couple hours behind schedule.

I immediately received an email from United apologizing for the issue and gave me $50 in travel certificate.

I’d say while the issue should have not happened, this was a very smooth follow up from United’s part. The crew and operations center, as well as customer service and CLE airport employees did a great job to minimize the impact to their passengers. Can’t speak for those who had tight connections at DEN though. And I learned that day that CLE was a UA hub/base.
