Hi all, I recently wrote a podcast essay on my 10 year upside down journey with quitting and returning to social media. Maybe some of you relate!
Summary:
This essay traces a decade-long, repeatedly failed attempt to escape social media.
It starts with an early realization about how notifications gave intermittent rewards that latches into the casual habit loops of everyday browsing. The first deletion resisted the guilt tied to fear of losing friends/connection, and the second by noticing how constant upward social comparison and self loathing entered scrolling habits.
Despite these deletions, the attention economy keeps pulling back in: artistic reasons, community projects, and a business venture, which leads to an inside experience of the attention economy and how rationalizations are sometimes used to keep playing.
The essay completes with one final deletion, but closes in exploring that even outside of traditional short form content, artifacts of the attention economy like notification bells on YouTube still trigger old feelings, and honest curiosity of whether you can create things on the internet and get out.
Not an INTJ, just a visitor from the other side of intuition.
