ACTION ALERT! Motion to accelerate Active Transportation in the City of LA

ACTION ALERT! We need your help TOMORROW (Wednesday) at 8:30 AM! Councilwoman Heather Hutt has introduced a motion — Council File 26-1376 — to accelerate Active Transportation projects in the City of Los Angeles.

We have a historic opportunity, and if we don’t meet this moment, the City could lose tens, if not hundreds, of millions of dollars in funding because we won’t deliver on projects with earmarked money (we already lost $100 M).

The motion (attached) will come before the Transportation Committee tomorrow (Wednesday) at 8:30 AM. They ONLY allow in-person comment. It is on consent, but it would be good to have either letters sent in (which can be submitted here), in-person, or if you want a simple and easy way to send a quick letter to the Chair of the Transportation Committee, Heather Hutt, please use our advocacy tool now!

AB 1599 the California Bus Stop Registry Bill

We’re thrilled to share that AB 1599, the California Transit Stop Registry Act, has been signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom! Authored by Assemblymember Patrick Ahrens, this landmark legislation will make it easier for riders across California to find, understand, and use public transit—especially when traveling between different agencies and jurisdictions.

Move LA, AARP, Streets For All, Seamless Bay Area, and the California Transit Association came together to bring this bill to fruition. This is a continuation of our work to improve the rider experience by adding more amenities like bus shelters. This victory reflects the persistence and collaboration of advocates, riders, public agencies, and partners committed to making transit more seamless and accessible statewide.

What AB 1599 Delivers

The new law will require Caltrans to establish a centralized registry with standardized information for transit stops, including:

A consistent stop name and precise location

A unique statewide identifier for each transit stop

Information about amenities at each stop, including seating and shelter

Greater consistency in the data transit agencies publish for trip-planning apps, agency websites, and public datasets

Transit operators will use the registry’s information and unique stop IDs in the data they share, helping ensure that one physical stop is recognized as the same stop across systems and applications.

Why It Matters for Riders

For transit riders, better stop data means a more reliable and less confusing journey.

Today, a stop served by multiple agencies can appear under different names, locations, or IDs in different apps—even when it is the exact same physical bus stop. AB 1599 will help eliminate that confusion, making it easier for trip-planning tools to direct riders to the right place and support smoother transfers between local, regional, and intercity services.

This statewide standard also creates a stronger foundation for:

More accurate information in Google Maps, Apple Maps, Transit, and other trip-planning tools

Easier transfers between transit systems

Better identification of where stops lack seating, shelter, and other rider amenities

Smarter service planning, accessibility improvements, and equity analysis

More coordinated public transit across California’s more than 200 transit agencies

Thank you to Assemblymember Ahrens for his leadership, Governor Newsom for signing this important bill, and every advocate, transit professional, and rider who helped make the case for a better-connected California.

AB 1599 shows what is possible when we focus on the everyday experience of riders. We look forward to seeing the California Transit Stop Registry make transit easier to navigate, more accessible, and more dependable for communities across the state.

Metro could lose $50 million annually for transit operations under the current budget. Can you take action now?

If the California Legislature and Governor Newsom don’t restore funding this week, we could see a nearly $50 million loss annually to LA Metro (see letter)!

The State Legislature can still step in, undo these disastrous cuts, and reprioritize investments in affordable housing, bus, rail, and clean air programs that make our lives better, more affordable, and cleaner. We need California legislators to understand that these critical community programs are first in line for funding.

Will you email the chair of the Assembly Budget Committee, Jesse Gabriel, and ask him to honor the Legislature's commitments from last year?

Earlier this month, over 250 Californians from Humboldt to San Diego and from the state line to the coastline came together under the banner of groups like Move California, Transbay Coalition, Seamless Bay Area, Move LA, Enterprise, and Streets for All to say “Fund Transit Now!” Advocates then fanned out across the State Capitol to speak directly with legislators and their staff about the importance of these transit, housing, and clean air programs.

We need to keep the pressure up. Can you send an email now to Assemblymember Gabriel, from the San Fernando Valley in Southern California, before this year’s legislative session ends?

Secretary Duffy -- Bike Lanes Aren’t “DEI” and Here is Why

Last month, US Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy declared that he was redirecting $1.73 billion away from “DEI bike lanes” to fund the expansion of car-dominated roads and similar projects.

Bike infrastructure is NOT just another instrument of the “deep-state woke DEI agenda”. It’s critical infrastructure that gets people to work, promotes transit equity, fosters clean air, and supports healthy living. Read the latest on Substack.

California Bus Stop Registry Bill Approved by the Legislature!

This is a story about bus stops and our transformative legislation, AB 1599, that sets the foundation for a more seamless and integrated transit system throughout California!

There are over ten thousand bus stops in Los Angeles County alone and with 250+ transit agencies, hundreds of thousands statewide. And we simply don’t know where most of them are!

The result is a physical stop shows up differently across apps, confusing rider and making it harder to make your connection. For a rider with a disability, it makes it even harder to catch your ride.

Move LA’s sponsored bill, Assembly Bill 1599, ends this chaos by creating a California Bus Stop Registry and assigning every stop in the State a California ID so when your map app pulls it up, it is automatically correct!

For Riders, AB 1599:

  • Creates a seamless transfers across agencies and modes
  • Supports accessibility and equity investments
  • Eliminates (expensive) custom trip planning apps
  • Future-proofs systems for modernization
  • Makes capital planning easier

Now AB 1599 sits on the Governor’s desk waiting his signature! Let’s do this!

🚨 USDOT Secretary Duffy Proposes Cutting key mass transit and Complete Streets programs completely

This is a 🚨 🚨 🚨 🚨 🚨 fire!

Freeway Cowboy Sean Duffy proposed eliminating the Highway Trust Fund’s mass transit account!

Duffy also proposed cutting funding for Complete Streets (safety programs for🚶🏿& 🚴‍♀️) and grants for EV charging infrastructure!

Lastly, Duffy proposed eliminating public transit system improvements and tolling programs from eligibility for the traffic congestion solutions program!

Duffy did not even have the courtesy to send it to the House of Representatives, despite them being the only ones to draft language for a reauthorization of the Surface Transportation Bill with key champions like Rep. Rick Larsen and Laura Friedman calling for MORE transit, bike, and pedestrian funding.

We are talking BILLIONS in funding for key mass transit, bicycle and pedestrian projects.

To add insult to injury, the Administration is REFUSING to sign agreements for billions in already budgeted funding for key BRT projects (like Vermont Ave) and transit infrastructure projects according to the New York Times.

Who wants to help us launch a campaign to fight this??

UPDATE: Transportation 4 America says Congress should just pass a one year extension of the Surface Transportation Bill and maybe keep doing that for several more years.

We have had a lot of requests for Move LA merch from our community and so we are proud to be partnering with Ethix Ventures--a union shop that ethically sources materials--to produce some fun merch just in time for riding the D Line! We were inspired by Metro's push to the boundaries and came up with some fun ideas. Order online, and a portion of the proceeds will go to support Move LA's nonprofit mission.

In a few short days, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority will do something almost unimaginable 50 years ago—open a subway under Wilshire Boulevard connecting downtown Los Angeles to Beverly Hills and soon Century City and Westwood.

At Move LA, we have always imagined the unimaginable. In fact, our founder, Denny Zane, has always lived by the motto “fortune favors the bold!” The extension of the D Line West is truly a bold "OMG Moment" for Metro and a testament to the steady leadership of CEO Stephanie Wiggins and Board Chair Fernando Dutra.

Move LA's Executive Director Eli Lipmen writes about how this "OMG Moment" is going to transform Los Angeles: https://open.substack.com/pub/elilipmen/p/los-angeles-metros-omg-moment

Let’s tell Burbank City Council we support true bus rapid transit!

The North Hollywood to Pasadena BRT project is moving forward and is supposed to connect Pasadena with North Hollywood, via a short bus ride, prior to the 2028 Summer Olympics!

Bad news is some city council members have expressed interest in blocking construction permits for the project. This would slow down service for the badly needed regional transportation project and could throw the project’s timeline into question. Please join us at City Hall Tuesday, May 5, with a coalition of transit riders, cyclists housing advocates and other urbanists, for a brief day of action. It will be Cinco de Mayo, so if you’re free after, join us for drinks and tacos at a mini-happy hour!

We have to fight this!

The California Air Resources Board is proposing amendments that will add up to 118 million metric tons of allowances back into the market, providing at least $3.5 billion in subsidies to the fossil fuel industry. CARB and Governor Newsom want to expand the emissions cap at the very moment when the oil and gas industry are making windfall profits from the illegal war with Iran and further increasing our reliance on fossil fuels.

What is worse is this will blow a giant $1.65 billion hole in the budget that funds public transit operations and capital projects, as well as affordable housing near transit.

Legislators wrote a letter to CARB and you can write a letter, too. Deadline is May 4. Submit comments here:
