how do you stop consuming?

I think I’m pretty good at being frugal and eco-conscious. I barely buy clothes, for example. I try to be mindful about what I buy and what life it will go on to have. I try to buy local, and not overbuy, and just generally make smart decisions.

I had a huge makeup problem, and in 2020 I just wrote what I could buy and what I couldn’t buy and all of a sudden it stopped (my Sephora points even died). I can usually convince myself not to buy stuff because it saves me money or because it’s bad for the planet.

And yet…

I don’t use Shein or Temu, but I always end up buying stuff on Ali Express—things which feel useful at the time. I have a bunch of hobbies / interests (travel, sewing, embroidery, stationary, cosmetics) and I can go crazy buying accessories which I know I don’t need. The retail high is real. And while I don’t usually regret these purchases, they are often not worth it.

And because I’m usually careful with my consumption, it feels like it’s fine to buy things every once in a while.

So… how do you guys make the feeling stop?

is there a reason I can’t play?

I loved Pharaoh as a kid, and was really excited to learn there’s a new version.

I had an old laptop from 2017 and I recently upgraded to a 2020 desktop that was rarely used. I did a clean reboot and installed just the barest of programs. it is still a lot slower than I wish it were.

I proceeded to go to Steam and buy A New Era. I have been trying to play, but for every hour I manage to actually play there must be at least 3 I spend lagging.

I am at the Sea People’s level, desperate to finish it, and have spent all day just trying to load the game. it lags, freezes, and just shuts down. I have restarted my computer like 5 times.

is there something wrong with my computer? should I try downloading the game without Steam and just PHARAOHS TOMB my way to this level so I can finally win it? I’m really, really annoyed at this point. I wanted to spend my Saturday building pyramids, not rebooting my computer.

high quality linen in Italy?

there’s been some discussion here recently about linen and how it’s getting harder to find high-quality fabric (with longer, rather than shorter, threads in the weave).

i’ll be going to Italy and I was wondering if it’s possible to find this high-quality linen for sale, even if it’s pricy, and if anybody has any recommendations for shops.

thanks!

woman’s eco-conscious urban EDC for type 1 diabetes

I see a bunch of EDCs out there for other people’s emergencies (“bring tylenol in case someone has a headache” type of advice). I simply hate the idea that you’re responsible for preventing *everything*. so, my rule is simple: if I’ve ever found myself wishing I had something, I have added it.

I live in a big city, so if I ever really need water or a painkiller I can buy it, no problem. what I do have is type 1 diabetes and wear a pump and a sensor, so I need a couple extra things. I’m also really eco-conscious and try to reduce waste. I have foregone some single-use items and created reusable options

from top to bottom, left to right:

TOP

  • keys with 4 glucose tablets in an aluminium case
  • makeup remover wipe (I bought a travel size and cut it further into quarters, as opposed to single-use sheets): sometimes my makeup gives me allergies and I need to remove it ASAP
  • eyedrops decanted into a mini glass dropper (as opposed to single-use tubes): for my allergies
  • sunblock samples
  • AA battery: for my insulin pump
  • alcohol wipes: great for disinfecting surfaces or hands (substitutes hand sanitizer)

MIDDLE

  • emergency whistle
  • mini flashlight
  • swiss army knife (with scissors, blade, nail file, screwdrivers, can opener, toothpick, and tweezers)
  • mini pencil (worn down from use)
  • lip balm that can also be used as ointment or moisturizer (attached to my keys)
  • medical cloth tape: for my glucose sensor if it becomes unstuck. it is really good as a multi-purpose adhesive as well
  • hair tie
  • safety pins
  • moisturizer sample

BOTTOM

  • power bank
  • bag with wired headphones and charging cable: I hate being stranded without my earphones
  • money wrapped in a plastic bag
  • bamboo spork wrapped in a paper tissue: in case I get coffee or eat something where only plastic cutlery is available, I can use mine
  • wet wipe in a tube (took a bamboo wipe and tolled it, boiled it for 7 minutes, put it (with boiled tongs) in my aluminium container—I wouldn’t treat it as sterile, but at least there’s nothing growing in there when I need to wipe something)

this all fits in a mini Muji nylon bag, except for my keys. the knife dangles outside because I use it regularly. my purse also has a small spray bottle with alcohol (instead of hand sanitizer) and reusable carry bags.

I present to you…my dad’s tiny pen collection

the last one is really tiny—smaller than anything I’ve seen lately. taking it out of my dad’s collection makes me really happy

I’m looking to buy an airfryer without teflon (so basket styles are out) and the internet keeps recommending Breville models.

they’re very expensive (airfryer-wise) but I don’t mind the expense as long as it’s a long lasting, high quality appliance that performs as promised.

does anybody have any experience with the brand? should I splurge on an airfryer or just get a similar (cheaper model)? what’s the best non-teflon airfryer out there?

I discovered this dust (frass?) coming from a shelf I got from Facebook Marketplace.

Immediately removed the shelf and took it outside.

I don’t live in the US; my house is made of brick (rather than wood) so I’m not too concerned, except for the floors.

I had the shelf for about two months. I’m in Mexico City.

I would also appreciate any advice on how to treat the shelf to salvage it.
