Does anyone know if the person stuck in a tree yesterday made it down okay?

It's been a rough week here in Woodland. First the attack on Corner Drug. Now people getting stuck in trees. Stay safe out there everyone!

Reasons I was grumpy in this picture:

  1. It was summer in Texas. It was hot. Very hot.
  2. My mom made all of my dresses; I'm not a dress girl.
  3. Flowers: Wilty
  4. I don't like having my picture taken. Never did.
  5. Hate wearing shoes.

There were probably others, but I don't remember them.

Pro-tip: Just like you use a blanket to warm you up in the winter, use a damp cooling towel to chill you down during the summer! It makes such a difference. Get 'em and keep 'em damp, they cool off when you twirl them. Reminder from public school science: Water cools as it evaporates.

I had to perform a flytrap jailbreak today

I've been dealing with an unfortunate infestation of meal moths in my kitchen. The only upside is that they provide occasional food for my flytrap. I saw a moth on the window screen today that was slower than usual and looked almost-dead, but it was moving so I snatched it up (too easily, in hindsight) and took it to my flytrap for feeding.

I dropped the moth into a waiting trap with no trouble at all -- they're usually a challenge, even after being in the freezer for a minute. Then, as the trap was closing, I saw that the moth was held fast in the grip of a tiny jumping spider, whom I'd fed to the trap along with the moth.

I desperately tried to hold the trap open so the spider could escape, but a) the spider didn't want to let go of the moth, and b) those traps are STRONG. I could not hold it open for the life of me. I ended up having to destroy the trap by snapping it open and scooting the spider away to safety.

I then removed the moth, handed it back to the spider, and it continued feeding. All is now well. Except for the broken trap in picture 1.

Singing chili man in Old Sac?

There was a busker on the corner of K and Front St. in Old Sac today dressed in what I think was a chili costume. I was charmed, took a video of him, and didn't think to tip him. I feel really bad about it. Anyone know who he is so I can send him a few bucks? His songs were probably geared to kids, but I found them really positive and uplifting. One of them taught me to do some math. ❤️

How V. Flytraps Snap Shut with Astonishing Speed

"Experiments showed that, after an insect crawls into the flytrap’s maw, cells on the outer surface of the hinged leaf that forms the plant’s ‘mouth’ soften. This allows the leaf to change shape and hinge shut."

(The article is in reference to a research paper just published in Science.)

Nugget's banana pudding = highly recommended

Don't know if Nugget has always had banana pudding or if it's new to them. I just tried it after it showed up in their weekly ad. It's really good! It's a bit sweeter than the banana pudding I grew up with in the South, but I'm not mad at it.

Check it out if it sounds good to you. It's yummy.

(Not sponsored in any way. It's just a dish I miss from childhood, and this is a pretty good facsimile of it.)

Stick with me here: I feel like this piece would have made a useful analog decision tree in pre-computing times.

I have a container garden in my front yard that surrounds a few bird baths. In one of those pots, I had placed the perfect stick. It was about 24” tall. Straight and sturdy as all get-out, but also very thin. It had an even thinner branch popping out at the perfect angle a few inches down from the top of the stick. My yard is full of lesser goldfinches right now, and they’d cling to the stick and perch on its lateral while squabbling over the bird bath.

The stick fell over during the night last night, which I didn’t notice until the landscaping crew was out there this morning doing their work. I was on a Zoom meeting, directly in front of my living room window, when one of the landscapers grabbed my fallen stick, snapped it in half, and threw it in the waste bin. I was so taken aback that my colleagues on Zoom saw my face and asked me what had just happened. For a split-second I debated whether to tell them about the stick tragedy I’d just witnessed, but I thought better of it, waved it off, and tried (but failed) to remain 'present' for the rest of the meeting.

I didn't tell them because I didn't want to risk becoming known as the person who had a breakdown during a Zoom meeting over a stick. I had to tell someone, though, because I am truly mourning that wonderful, perfect stick.

Thanks for listening, and for understanding.
