Thinking of Selling My 2024 Sam

With the Clem release coming up, I’ve been thinking about letting this go—my first Rivendell.

I don’t dislike the color. It’s actually quite nice. But there’s always another bike, isn’t there? In my case, it’s that light blue or mustard-yellow Sam that keeps catching my eye while a perfectly good bicycle is sitting right in front of me.

Complicating matters is a Crust Bombora that I’ve been loving lately. It occupies enough of the same general territory as the Sam that, in a household with multiple bikes, I’m beginning to wonder how many variations on “comfortable, capable bike I can ride just about anywhere” I really need.

So I’m putting this out there mostly to see if there’s a market for the frame before I do something I may or may not regret.

The backstory, because anyone buying a used frame deserves the whole story:

When I picked it up from Rivendell HQ, I noticed the rear derailleur hanger looked a few degrees off to one side. At the time, I knew just enough about bicycle mechanics to be dangerous, which is to say I noticed it, shrugged, and kept building. And for about a year, everything was fine. I mostly commuted to work on it.

Then one day, just as I was setting off on my commute, I had a chain-suck incident that folded my vintage Shimano XTR derailleur roughly ninety degrees in the wrong direction. A fairly undignified end for a very nice derailleur. 😢

The hanger was repaired and properly aligned afterward, and the derailleur has held up fine since. More importantly, so has the bike. I’ve continued commuting on it and rode it on a metric century without issue. It has some cosmetic wear from actually being ridden, and I’d photograph and disclose all of that clearly to anyone interested.

Tl;dr

So: Sam Hillborne frameset, known history, around $700.

The money would go straight into a Clem and its build, because apparently the solution to having several bikes with overlapping purposes is not to own fewer bikes, but to rearrange which ones they are.
Whacky idea? Or should I leave well enough alone and keep the Sam?

Hello friends! Just looking for some honest feedback here about the fit of this shirt. I purchased an XL and this cut is a relaxed fit.

Is my spindle too long? I’m getting some noise when in my lowest gear.

I’m thinking that the spindle length might be too long on my 1x creating too much cross chaining. Thinking of possibly shortening the spindle by a mm or two to hopefully remedy this. What do you think?

Airplane Activities for Toddlers

Hello, we’re going on a long flight overseas and asking the community for recommendations for activities for toddlers 3 years old and above. Yes we are planning to use screens but only as a last resort. What are some activities that helped you for road trips and flights?

Almost complete Crust Bombora

Picked up the frame used. New rims and brakes and the rest is from parts bin hence the incomplete handlebar tape and black cable housing. Hope I did ok with this one. Got the widest spindle I could find for the Sugino mightys but wondering now if there’s too much cross tension from chainring to cassette.

IH-634 Vintage Blue, 18 oz | 2 year progress

There’s some really wild fades happening in year two. I wore these pretty regularly in year one. Washed only about three times whenever the funk started to become noticeable. Once the fades set in, I moved onto another pair and just wore these during warm days or spring/summer on weekends.

Even with the sparse use on year two, there’s still much change happening. Not much behind the knees or around the shins yet. But really happy where this is now.

For the love of the bike build gods, please tell me I got this right

Not my first go round building up a bike, but every build is a new adventure and new set of tools. Based on the pictures and what you know about this BB, did I get the right tools to install this? Am I missing anything?

If there’s anything I learned from bike builds, it’s the buying of the tools and unnecessary stuff that is so unforgiving. In addition to all the waiting on parts and all the other jazz.

Anyhow, it’s still fun and I just want to keep building more. This bb is for a used crust bombora that I’m attaching some Sugino Super Mightys to.

Bike build gods be merciful.
