LPT: You can pull your credit reports for free and you don't need to pay for your scores

There are lots of companies that charge for credit monitoring services, but you can find most or all of the information you need for free.

There's a federally-backed website where you can pull all 3 of your full credit reports once a week without providing any credit card or payment information (AnnualCreditReport .com - don't want to break rules by posting any links). Pulling your own reports doesn't hurt your credit scores at all.

There's a good chance you also have free access to at least one version of your credit scores through your bank or a credit-card issuer. Many of them now offer some level of free score monitoring. On top of that, there's no real benefit to paying for your scores, because each person has multiple credit scores that can vary depending on which version you pull.

If you have questions about credit reports or scores, let us know. We're a nonprofit credit counseling organization that offers free financial education. (We will not include links or anything promotional in our response - just info for anyone who has questions!)

Is debt settlement safe? 🫣

Looking for a way to manage your debt?

Sometimes "debt relief" or "debt settlement" can seem like the solution. But it's important to know the potential downsides before hiring a company for this kind of service.

Debt relief companies typically collect a monthly payment from you for 2-4 years, but the money doesn't go to your creditors. In fact, these companies usually instruct you to stop paying your debt.

As a result of your missed debt payments, you can face serious credit damage, late fees and penalty interest rates from creditors, and you can even be sued for what you owe. On top of that, there's no guarantee your creditors or debt collectors will accept a settlement offer.

So the whole experience might not pay off in any way at all!

Instead of hiring a company that can't guarantee results, try talking with one of the NFCC's nonprofit credit counselors. In a credit counseling session, you get tips for negotiating your own debt settlements, advice on how to improve your credit and more.

Contact 800-388-2227 or visit NFCC.org to get started!

Are there any credit counselors or former credit counselors here in r/CRedit?

Hi r/CRedit,
Thank you to the mods for encouraging us to share this post here!

The NFCC has recently created a sub called r/AskACreditCounselor . It's a community where anyone can post their questions and receive answers from verified current and former credit counselors.

If you've ever worked as a credit counselor, we would love to have you in the sub. There's no obligation to post/comment, but if you ever have info to share, you're welcome to chip in. To find out how you can get verified (and get some cool flair✨), check out the link in the comments below.

Of course, anyone is welcome to join the sub, whether you're a credit counselor or not.

Let us know if you have any questions. 👇

We were targeted by bots. What do we do?

A few days ago we received notices showing that about 5 different users had left nearly identical negative comments on a couple of our posts. All of the comments were removed by the mods for the subs where we posted, and one of the users was banned by r/BotBouncer.

Is there any way for us to find out who is behind BotGate '26?🤖 Also, are there steps we should take to address the issue and prevent it from happening again?

We are a nonprofit agency, and the bots were likely affiliated with one of our for-profit competitors, so this could potentially happen again.

Nonprofit credit counseling agency here.👋Got questions about salary, income or debt?

Hi r/salary,

We’re the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC). We wanted to introduce ourselves and share some info.👋

The NFCC is relatively new to Reddit, but we're the oldest nonprofit credit counseling network in the U.S. Our counseling agencies have been helping people find answers to income and money-management related questions for decades.

Do you have any questions for us about income, debt or general money management? Some of the questions we get asked the most often include:

How much of my paycheck should go to retirement?

Should I use my raise to pay off debt, save or invest?

Am I earning enough to qualify for a mortgage?

How do I manage limited income?

Just to be clear, we're not selling anything. Just here to provide free financial info for anyone who's looking for support! Feel free to drop your questions below and we'll help with tips/resources/etc. 🤗

Thanks!
