Ed sang “American Pie” in Denver for 4th of July, first time he’s ever covered it, one of his favorite songs. 🤯🇺🇸🎆🎇🎆🎇
American Pie is the song that started off Beoga’s set tonight. (Usually it’s Galway Girl). Ed introduced it by saying he was doing something special for the 4th of July and America’s 250th Birthday, and urged the audience to sing the chorus loudly, saying that they’d know the words. Then he surprised them with the opening chords. American Pie was a huge hit internationally, in the early 1970’s.
Watch Ed sing Don McLean‘s “American Pie” live in Denver on the 4th of July.
It’s an 8 minute song, so this is only a portion, when I find a more complete recording I’ll add it here.
EDIT: Added this link just posted by Ed on instagram, short song clip and brief spoken word.
And here’s a 3 minute clip of the end of the song with a screen and stadium perspective.
And finally, the full song! The audio is good, the visuals aren’t close to stage but you can see Ed and it’s crazy to hear Ed singing all those lyrics nonstop for 8 minutes🤯
2016?! OMG, NOW, I found this clip of Ed singing American Pie in 2016 in a bar, amazing. 🤯🤯🤯
Ed does have a Teleprompter available, maybe the first time I’ve ever seen him use one. Who can blame him, with this song?!
I remember an old interview from maybe 10 years ago, Ed was talking about his deep love for Don McLean's American Pie, saying he thought it was one of the best American folk songs ever made, and he was suggesting people go on YouTube and watch videos that analyze and explain the meaning of the song! 😍 I think this is the first and only time he has ever covered it at a concert. Wow!🤯
EDIT: I’m still looking for that interview where Ed speaks at length about American Pie, but here is a gorgeous video of Ed sitting with Don McLean in 2015, rehearsing Don‘s song called “Vincent“. Ed sounds and plays beautifully here. 🤩
