Swami Tadatmananda's view on Karma..

I have a doubt.

Pujya Swamiji says that the theory of Karma is about "belief"; it can neither be proved nor disproved.

But then he says that we have this human incarnation since we were not enlightened in the past life (else we would not have had this human incarnation).

How can we reconcile these statements? Isn't incarnation (rebirth) a result of unfructified karma?

[University Question] Employment situation at Stanford

Have been hearing for quite some time now that first time in history, even Stanford grads are struggling to find jobs.

Does anyone know for sure whether there is any truth to this or is this just hearsay?

Killing desires...

How is it possible to kill desires, in order to attain spiritual upliftment (forget attaining enlightenment).

Is the only way for this is to opt for a "higher" desire (such as for Ishvara) so that materialistic desires then become inconsequential?

Dreams throughout the night

Throughout last year I had very bad insomnia. Almost every night I had to take sleeping pills to fall asleep.

This year, the improvement is that most of the days I am able to fall asleep without taking sleeping pills. However a completely new problem has cropped up: throughout the night, I have dreams (not necessarily nightmares). Consequently, my mind is continuously engaged and agitated. Hence, when I wake up, I am extremely tired.

Does anyone have any idea about why this could possibly be and what could a possible remedy.

[General Question] Health insurance in MS

I have heard that grad schools provide health insurance to International students but not to domestic students, since the schools believe that domestic students would already have a pre-existing insurance.

Is this correct? If yes, do domestic students still have an option to opt for the insurance provided by the school?

When are classes starting at Christ University?

I am a new admit to the BSc EMS program. Can someone let me know the exact date when the classes are starting this year?

If the exact date is not known, can you tell me when classes started last year?

Hi! I am an incoming MSCS student.

Can someone guide me how time-tokens work and things that I should be especially aware of, during the course registration process.

Ramana Maharshi's enlightenment...

Did Ramana Maharshi gain enlightenment at the age of 16, without any exposure to Advaita Vedanta or did he have some formal exposure to Advaita?

If he did not have prior exposure, did he at some point later resort to formal reading of Advaita?

If none of this happened, how are his observations almost a mirror copy of what Advaita says?

If you tell me that this is because the knowledge in Advaita is the only way to get enlightenment, are you suggesting that no person from any other religion or belief has ever gotten enlightened? That's hard to believe honestly.

Was this wrong for me to do that?

We have a small temple in our house. This morning, when I was performing the pooja, a paper with shlokas written on it kept flying around because of the fan.

So, I put a very small Ganesha statue of the temple on the paper, to prevent this from happening.

Was this in any way an act of disrespect for the deity?

Specialization in MS for job prospects: AI or Computing Systems at GaTech

I am an upcoming grad student at GaTech. Among the other specializations, AI or Computing Systems are the specializations that interest me.

Which of these two specializations would be better purely from a job perspective? ChatGPT is suggesting that AI job market is already "saturated" and so, Computing Systems would be better.

Honestly, I am not convinced that AI job market is already saturated; I thought AI is only now witnessing some significant activity. How can it already be saturated?

[Funding and Scholarships] Fellowship + TA/RA given at GaTech

I am an upcoming MSCS student at GaTech. Fellowship apparently covers the first year tuition plus living expenses. The expectation is research during MSCS, leading to Thesis.

The issue however is that I am not interested in pursuing PhD and my motive is to join the industry after MSCS.

I had a few questions in this regard:

  1. In addition to Thesis and Coursework, can I still pursue an internship next year (2027) or does the Thesis preclude the possibility of internship?
  2. Apparently 12 credit-hours of work is required for the Research/Thesis work over 4 semesters. How much effort per week would this requirement translate to? I understand this might be subjective, but some approximate ballpark would do.
