Getting rid of TV completely with 4yo?

Hi all,

We are moving across the country with our 4.5 year old boy and our 3 month old boy.

Our 4.5 year old LOVES - loves - loves TV. He would sell my (mom) soul for a new episode of Paw Patrol. He is completely bewitched and hypnotized by the big beautiful "tee", as he calls it; if allowed, he'd spend every waking minute glued to it.

Our usual limits are he can have more or less how much he wants (with enforced breaks) on sat & sun, no TV at all on weekdays. This system has worked reasonably well. We don't do any other screens than the TV.

My husband and I watch little-to-no TV ourselves. My husband watches more but usually on his laptop because he wants to watch late at night when I'm already in bed (the TV had been in our room since we had a large master bedroom and small living room).

Well, my husband accidentally got a too-small moving truck (!!!! that's its own rant) and we have to sacrifice some items, including our TV.

I'm seriously considering not replacing it. I mean, I almost never watch it. I can't think of a good place for it to go in the new house; I don't want it in a bedroom, and we will have little enough space in our living room as it is to fit all 9,000 toys for our kids as well as furniture. The TV is basically just for my son. It'd be nice to just be rid of the thing; I wouldn't miss it at all.

The other part of me feels bad for taking something away that my son has a deep, abiding passion for. He genuinely feels attached to shows like Paw Patrol and the characters there. I also don't want him to feel isolated from his peers who almost all have some kind of screen exposure. I've already noticed that my son feels embarrassed when he realizes he doesn't know how to operate ipads or play video games and some of his friends are very good at it.

Thoughts? Anybody who has ripped TV from their children's clutches before?

33F, Numb Skin on Kneecap Day After a Hard Fall

Hi,

I'm 33F, 5'6", 160lbs, in good health. I fell yesterday when a ladder slipped out of from under me. I landed very hard on my legs. I had a lot of bruising, swelling and pain so I went to an urgent care and they x-rayed me every which way from knees down, no fractures.

My left knee took a particularly hard hit and is very bruised and mildly swollen. There is an abrasion and unbruised skin right at the spot where I hit, then a large ring of bruising around it.

The site of the abrasion and unbruised skin right around it are completely numb to the touch since the fall. Maybe 3 square inches. What's causing this? Is the feeling ever going to come back?

Thanks!

My 4M son has a significant interdental lisp. Would you push for school-based services?

Just curious what your guys' opinions would be.

My son is 4 (will be 5 in January) and has been getting speech through an outpatient clinic out of a major children's hospital. His last assessment about a year ago, he was in the 5th percentile for articulation. He has a couple phonological errors but primarily his issue is a significant interdental lisp (he has interdental tongue placement on lots of sounds, and makes a lisping /s/ sound for words like "jump" or "chair", sounding like "sump" or "sair"). It can make him hard to understand at times but his speech is largely intelligible.

He loves going to speech therapy but we are moving out of state and he'll be starting in TK. His current SLP wasn't sure if he'd qualify for school-based services but she provided his last eval for me to share with his school. But I'm not sure whether to push for him to be evaluated and continue in speech or just leave it for now. I've gotten some conflicting feedback about whether to let him mature on his own or to keep up with the momentum of services. For what its worth, my husband/my son's father has a lisp that he never outgrew and wishes he'd gotten speech for.

What're your opinions about whether to treat a significant interdental lisp in a young kid?

Anybody else's baby who gets "stuck" in startle reflex?

I've already messaged the pediatrician but just curious if anybody else's baby does/did this. My boy is 8 weeks old, healthy, full term, no concerns. About 4 or 5 times total he's done this weird thing that is quite alarming to watch - he seems to get "stuck" in his startle reflex. His arms will be held straight out at his sides, jerking a little, his back slightly arched, his face looking scared. He grunts like he can't really breath and his face turns red. Instead of a usual startle reflex, which is one movement and then it's over, this just continues on. I pick him up of course within a few seconds of seeing it and he'll stop immediately, draw in a big breath, and cry. It has always happened while lying flat on his back, nothing happening really to startle him that I can tell. He is fine immediately afterwards.

Anybody else have a baby who did this?

Others Who Combo Feed By Choice?

Hi,

I'm a STM to a 5 week old boy. My first I EBF for 4 or 5 months, then combo fed til 9 months when he decided he was done with nursing. I have no supply issues with either, but with my first I developed post partum psychosis, so for this baby, the plan from birth was that overnights would be formula bottles given by grandma (my mom) or dad (my husband).

We've been doing this so far with success. Although my milk was slow to come in, I think because of sleeping overnight without nursing, it has come in fully. In the mornings after I take baby back, I nurse him and then pump and 9 times out of 10 I am able to pump what he drank in formula overnight, so that each day I am producing the amount of milk he drinks (my mom doesn't want to give him breastmilk overnight because she finds it easier to prep the ready-to-feed formula, which I'm fine with). I was prepared for low supply given the hours overnight without nursing, but so far I've had no sign of supply dip.

Anybody else who is doing some formula just to make life easier rather than a latch/supply/breastfeeding issue that necessitated it? Sometimes I feel a little guilty that this baby could be EBF and exclusively nursed, but then I remind myself that I insisted on taking only certain medications post partum so that I could breastfeed at all, and my OB and psych had encouraged EFF. So any amount I breastfeed is a win. But then I think of those incredible moms who triple feed and pump and work so so hard to get supply up or EBF, and I feel like I should be making more of an effort to EBF...

Maintain Supply without Nursing at Night?

Hi,

TLDR2nd baby; no previous supply issues; going 9 hours overnight without nursing while baby gets bottles, in the morning I pump what he drank overnight. Still producing full supply each day. Do I need to worry supply will dip over time given the long stretches without nursing?

This is my second baby. I exclusively breastfed my first and had no supply issues.

My baby is 3 weeks old today. Since he's been born, he's been getting formula during the night so I can sleep. I had post partum psychosis with my first so it is imperative I sleep through the night. I also take meds at night that makes me too sedated to wake up with the baby.

I figured this would negatively affect my milk supply. It did seem to cause my milk to be delayed coming in, since the baby was in the hospital nursery overnight the first two nights after birth - it took 5 days for my milk to really come in. During this time we supplemented with formula. Once my milk was in, it took another several days before he no longer needed formula bottles during the day.

Now at night he takes around 5-7oz total over 2 feedings. What's interesting is in the morning when I wake up, after nursing him I pump almost exactly that amount every morning. I pump for 5 minutes (both breasts) and get within half an ounce of what he drank overnight. So now I'm actually making exactly what he takes. During the day, he doesn't need any bottles and is satisfied after each feeding. And at his 2 week check up he'd gained a pound over his birth weight and is growing like a weed so I know he's getting plenty of milk.

All this to say, is it possible that I can continue to provide full supply even though I'm going 9ish hours overnight without nursing at all? I know supply regulates around 6 weeks pp, but given that I'm producing exactly how much he takes each day, do I need to worry my supply will start to dip at 6 weeks?
