Went to replace sparkplugs and was welcomed to this. Valve cover gasket? Cam shaft?

Just about every tube looked like this and every spark plug has oil around it. Was planning on replacing my PCV soon anyways so would rather get everything done at once.

Is this a failing/failed PCV valve or something else on a MK7?

I have a 2015 golf sportswagen SEL with 106k miles. I have been working on the car and working towards doing maintenance / replacing parts going bad. I recently changed the oil, filled with 5qts (which I am now realizing may have been too low to begin with). After driving roughly 1k miles I got a low oil alert and when I checked the oil had dropped below the minimum line on the dipstick so I am having a large oil consumption issue.

I recently cleaned the engine bay and am now realizing it was probably a lot dirtier than it should be.

These are around the top of the engine, is this oil leakage from the PCV or possibly a line or something else?

When the car is running, if I attempt to open the oil lid there is a strong suction. Same with taking out the dipstick, strong suction. The small vent on the PCV valve diaphragm doesn't seem to be pushing or pulling air, and covering it with my finger doesn't change idle.

The idle on my car isn't fluctuating normally either. When I open the valve or dipstick while running, I don't notice a change in idle until I put either back in and then there is a quick change and back to normal.

The oil pan underneath the car isn't covered or dripping in oil, and I don't see any major signs of oil leaking.

Cleaned my engine bay ('15 sportswagen)

Had fun cleaning my engine bay with my son (4). No real reason. Purchased the car in October and want to get the most out of it. Purchased at 96k miles, currently at 105k. Checked for any cracks, leaks, or anything that stood out.

Purchased a larger, new battery. Cleaned the sunroof outlets and cut off the caps. Greased and fixed the gas cap valve. Oil changes every 5k miles. All recalls fixed. Fixed the push to start. Replaced cabin and engine air filters.

Getting four new tires this week. Next up are replacing spark plugs, break fluid change, probably this weekend.

Anything I am missing or should do?

Thought this was a Porsche, as it drove away realized it was a VW

Crazy part is it seemed to be his daily driver, had rearview camera installed on the plate and he had a phone mount all set up. Apparently it's a Volkswagen Karmann Ghia.

I sent my kid to school with a sweater, water bottle, and a stuffed animal in his backpack.

He came back with three sticks and none of the above.

Dog food for me

My version of dog food I make for myself. Quantities are based on using an entire 2.5lb container of Jennie-O Ground Turkey.

400g, roughly a half cereal bowl is ~500 calories and I typically have it with the other half of the bowl filled with chopped iceberg lettuce and two corn tortillas which brings the full meal to around 600 calories.

For the seasoning, you can use whatever taco seasoning packet you like, just use the correct amount to the lb of meat, so probably three packets. I make my own, but the only ingredient I track is the corn starch.

Also, for veggies I typically mix in anything extra I might have laying around. Today was a white onion and cherry tomatoes.

Super simple.

  1. Chop veggies

  2. Sautee bell peppers in EVOO (5 mins)

  3. Put aside veggies, sear ground turkey (season with salt and whatever you want) (10-15 mins)

  4. Add tomato paste and mix well

  5. Add water or preferably broth, mix to remove fond

  6. Add taco seasoning and reduce (5-10mins)

  7. Add cans of drained black beans, corn

  8. Add sauteed veggies back

  9. Mix thoroughly and simmer for about 5 mins to make it homogeneous.

Saw a post yesterday about someone wanting to hike Mnt Wilson, never having hiked alone and having hiked "a bit". A lot of people recommend going to Orchard Camp which is half way and checking how they're doing there since it's a good spot to turn around.

I decided within an hour of seeing that post to head over and try it out. Ive hiked to First Water plenty of times but never further, so I was aware of how steep the trail is and the trail conditions. The conditions seem much better than what they were even five years ago, although still plenty of sketchy parts. The hardest part for me was honestly the mental hurdles of hiking on granite slabs two feet from the edge which essentially drops to your death.

I decided to take Charlie's trail back down because I didn't feel comfortable hiking back down the main trail. (On a side note, Charlie must be a masochist because it's basically 60% switch backs)

I did not prepare enough for the hike, it took me a lot longer than I anticipated, and I only had a protein bar and a 16oz container of water. I was good on water and finished it on my way down stopping at first water. But I really could've used something else to eat because I was going on six hours of not having eaten.

Very difficult for me, had a great time, I definitely cannot do anything beyond Orchard Camp and will probably stick to hiking to First Water til I am more physically fit. For reference I am 5'10" and 205lbs. My time was 2 hours up and one down, almost exactly.
