So I have iTunes on two computers, and a phone which is set up to sync to the laptop's iTunes. The music library there is a small selection but I have a much bigger library on my desktop machine - getting up towards 2TB. I am retiring the laptop and thought it would make more sense to revert to a single iTunes install and connect the phone to that.

I actually haven't synced the phone to the laptop ever since I set it up by restoring from the previous phone's backup, so I've forgotten most of what I ever knew about the process.

Is it safe to connect the phone to the desktop right now or is there some housekeeping I should do either on the phone or in the desktop iTunes app before I do so? Can't risk bricking the phone :)

Any traps I should be aware of? Thx.

I have Office 365 incl Outlook on an old laptop and I have just installed Office 365 on a new laptop which is intended to replace it. Outlook on the old machine managed two active email accounts and had two additional accounts which are no longer used but still retain archived data. There are four PST files in Documents\Outlook Files.

First question, can I simply close Outlook on the old PC, copy the PST files to the new laptop, and then open Outlook there? Is it as simple as that? If it is more complex, is there a way to bring over address books, contacts, mail processing rules, email account credentials that won't require me to sacrifice a goat or call in an expensive consultant?

SupportAssist is nagging me to setup OS Recovery. I'm not sure why this wouldn't have been already installed with SupportAssist, and in fact I have already reinstalled my OS through "Reset my PC" without whatever this is.

Is it genuinely useful or just more bloat?

Several boxes of maps: variously for walkers, trampers, drivers; mainly NZ and England, some further afield; mix of ordinance survey, bartholomews, A to Z, various local track maps, etc.

Probably not of much practical use in these days of GPS on our phones, but it feels like it would be a shame to trash them when I know there will be other people who loved maps as much as my father did.

Just unboxed a brand new XPS16 shipped from Dell to New Zealand. To my surprise (and highly inconveniently) I have discovered that the power supply comes with a cable from the adapter to the laptop, but no cable from the adapter to the mains. I do not remember any note during the order process that I needed to order a separate power cable. I wonder if this is normal.

Anyways, I am stuck with a brick that needs power before I can turn it on for the first time.

I do have an old Dell Inspiron laptop lying around with a power cable that is about 12 years old; so I could take that cable as a temporary solution, but before I plug it in and try it I thought I should make sure that it's a safe option to take.

So I have a lime marmalade recipe I have used for several years and it's OK but this year I want to vary it a little. I'll give my existing recipe first then explain the problem.

Assuming 1kg of limes.
Cut all the limes in half, collect all the juice, store in fridge
Trim off the ends and any blemishes in the juiced lime halves, cover with boiling water and let stand overnight
Pour off the water, chop up the softened pith and peel, put into a preserving pan with all the juice
Add 2 litres water, bring it to the boil and simmer for 60 minutes
Add 1700g sugar slowly, stir it in, boil for at least 45 minutes
Scrape off the scum that starts to form towards the end of the boiling
Test for wrinkling on a chilled plate, then pour into hot sterilised jars

The flavour has been fine but there's been far too much pith, so the product is - in my opinion - aesthetically subpar. This year I have many more limes and plan on making far more and giving a lot of it away, so I'd like it to look good too.

You may have spotted the potential problem in my recipe; there's no separate weight/volume for juice and peel from the starting 1kg of limes.

This year for my first batch I am starting with 2kg of limes, I have juiced as before but instead of putting the juiced lime halves in boiling water I have kept most of the peel and discarded most of the pith. I now have 1300g of juice in the fridge, and 700g of chopped peel soaking in water.

"Approximately" how much water and sugar would be combined with those quantities so that I don't end up with either toffee or syrup?

I should say I am in NZ which is why it is lime picking season now :-)

I recently upgraded a System 76 Gazelle laptop from Fedora 43 to 44.

Intermittently I am seeing the following lines written to my terminal. Always in threes. The <verylongstring> is identical each time.

After this it goes quiet for a few days then happens again. I can't marry it up with anything specific happening on the machine at that time. I have several terminal windows open which are ssh'ing to other machines in my network but not doing any internet browsing or even running any browser at all.

Can anyone explain what might be causing these?

1. 'sudo reboot' no longer works; it's inhibited by the terminal session in which I am trying to initiate the reboot. The message I get tells me that I can ignore the inhibitors by typing 'sudo systemctl reboot -i'. However when I try that I get this message:

"The current polkit policy does not allow root to ignore inhibitors without authentication in order to reboot."

OK it's surmountable but a change like this should have been signalled better and you shouldn't have to get another error after following the instructions to recover from the first.

2, After getting past the above, I have rebooted this system several times. Roughly half of those times I can hear the system fans power up and down but the login screen stays black. When this happens I can ssh in from a different device and initiate a reboot and usually when I do that the login appears. Anything obvious I need to tweak to fix this?

When I ssh in I do see this line scroll past: "activate the web console with: systemctl enable --now cockpit.sockit". Is that related to this?

3. Even when the system lets me log in if I walk away from the screen and the display goes black, when I return and press a key the screen will; not wake up. The _system_ wakes up, it is clearly responding to key presses, but nothing appears on the screen until I ssh in and reboot again.

This is Gnome not KDE. Previous Fedora installs have not been so frustrating.
