What's happening to my orange tree?

I feel like it's dying but could be stress. Today is the first day it's rained in like 2 weeks and half the leaves have just gone. I can't see any evidence of beetle infestation or any small holes in the tree from borer.

Gardening App!

Hey everyone 👋

I’m currently building a new gardening app called Plantsense focused on plant identification, care guidance, growth tracking, and helping gardeners from beginner to advanced level grow healthier plants 🌱

We’re getting close to beta testing and I’m looking for a small group of gardeners/plant lovers who’d be interested in testing the app, giving honest feedback, and helping shape future features.

The app is being designed with Australia/NZ conditions in mind first, so local feedback would be incredibly valuable.

If you’d be interested in trying it out, comment below or send me a message 😊

P.S iv only developed on android thus far (sorry ios users) but its in the pipe line to port this project over to ios soon enough and ill let you guys know asap when thats available

Thanks guys 🫡

Vege patch options

Hello all.

I've got an L shaped raised vege patch. The problem is, I hate veggie patches.

What other options have I got for the veggie patch. Wild flowers, that sort of thing?

What to plant on this archway 😍

Hello! I have started a new garden. I have been travelling around with these arches for a long time. They are from my Late mother’s beautiful garden in Auckland, she had them engineered because she was so inspired by Monet’s Gardens. I live in West Auckland out at Bethells Beach and I am looking for ideas on what to plant. She had a red climbing Rose on one which was prolific, and then wisteria on another set of arches. I would love to have something cottagey and abundant maybe two different plants that light up at different seasons?! Or, maybe two different kinds of robust Roses?! Any recommendations that are hardy and pretty and have maximum flowers would be so well received thank you in advance 😊

White spots on strawberries?

I've been having nonstop problems with these little white mites (or maybe fungus?) on all of my strawberry plants. They're very small so I can't exactly tell what they are, and google keeps telling me it's aphids but I'm about 99% certain they're not. I have a tray of plants inside, and another hanging basket outside, and they've not come into contact with one another at any point. How can I treat this? What could it be?

Will I regret planting a lemon tree in a pot?

My partner and I are finally planting stuff to put on our north facing deck. We have romanticised the idea of having our very own lemon tree - however I’m disheartened to have just looked at some old posts on this sub and found posts from people having issues with pots and everyone seems to say plant in the ground. Unfortunately we don’t have that ability as we only have a deck and an astroturf area (we hate the turf, it was already here and we plan to redo that area but we probably won’t put a real lawn in as it’s south facing and very shady 😞)

Can someone please confirm if we’d be setting ourselves up for disappointment to bother with planting a lemon tree in a pot? Is it possible if you look after it well, and have a specific size pot, or specific variety? We have a spare 46cm pot, not sure if that’s too small… any advice or suggestions for alternatives would be amazing. Chat gpt is saying lemon would be fine in a pot but of course it’s designed to tell me what I want to hear…

We’re also planting jasmine, have a few Costaricana palms for privacy, and lavender. We’d love to have something that fruits but open minded to any plants - we just want to make it feel nice and green since we don’t have a proper “garden”.

Thanks so much!

Grisilina

Has anyone here done any underplanting below their Grisilina hedge? You see it often with other types of hedges but I’ve never seen it done with Grisilina so was hoping I could get some inspiration from what others have done

Maybe success

This avo tree started from seed, was in a pot for about 2 years, and has been in the garden since 2019. There are at least five avocados on there!

I fully expect them to be bland af but it's a nice kind of Lotto like feeling in the meantime.

Why is my catnip partly growing red / purple?

One plant is several years old, self seeded. The other I bought from Mitre 10 and planted 2 months ago. Both were green until a few weeks ago, now they’re growing some reddish-purple leaves.

I’m guessing maybe something in the soil? But I have changed nothing and one of the plants has been there for years. Thoughts?

Ps. The cat doesn’t mind, it all tastes the same to her.

Growth in and around carrots, what is it and is it a bad thing?

When I dug out the last of my carrots recently I found this bluish-white mesh-like growth through much of the soil, some on the surface but mostly in the couple of inches just below. It didn't seem to penetrate the carrots and I could just let it dry and then brush it off.

I've not seen it before; what is it, is it a bad thing, is there anything I can do to stop it coming back?

Tool needed to trim? 4m high hedge

Hi All, i have been maintaining this hedge. I am now looking at what tool can i purchase to trim it from the ground. I roughly worked it out to be just over 4m at present. So many options of long reach hedge trimmer but nothing that i can work out could maintain this height? Development at the back means 2-3 story so would like to keep it high for privacy and not to be overlooked. Churr

If anyone knows what hedge it is as well, would be helpful.

Growing Mango From Seed - Wairarapa - Update 2

For those of you who haven't met me yet, previous posts can be found on my user profile.

The root has sub-roots, and the shoot is almost trying its hand at leaves. I've promoted the water jar to a larger water pyrex dish, with a loose plan to actually plant it into dirt this weekend.

I'm a little bit more reluctant to have a pot of dirt sitting on the plate rack over my stove than I am a dish of water, mainly from a potential bugs and mess perspective. But I'll still do it anyway. I just might have to workshop a cloche of some sort that isn't made of plastic in case it touches the chimney and melts. Might see if I can find a squat glass bowl to invert over the pot, so it keeps everything contained, glasshouse style.

I've also got a good number of Kesar seeds drying out on the windowsill from my mango adventure to Yogijis in Petone, as well as another Kent seed from the supermarket last week because it was $3 ea. The Kent mango was a far less satisfying mango to eat after the almost full dozen Kesar mangoes I've eaten in the last fortnight. There's still two Kesar left, I intend to demolish them for #girldinner tonight.

I did just try to cut open one of the Kesar seed husks, and it was a much harder task than the first Kent husk had been, so I'm thinking a bit of gentle hammering might be on the cards when I want to germinate them. I'll also need to work out scaling up the water jar system, because the stove plate rack isn't enormous.

Black spot?

My double-grafted pear tree seems like it might be loosing a battle with something fungal? Initially thought the spots were just a bit of bronze beetle damage through the summer (probably added to sadness).

I know it's deciduous, but might as well check what others think.

Kikuyu control

We have a large griselinia hedge that forms a privacy wall to our neighbours. Under it Kikuyu are going rampant and climbing up the hedge. I've tried to pull the kikuyu but its futile. Im happy to spray it but im concerned on any potential harm to the hedge. Any advice on which spray to use / how to approach safely? Thanks
