So now that Boston Market is gone, where do you go?

I loved Boston market for a long time - it was fast food, but if I squinted a bit and fooled myself, I could say it was 'healthy' fast food.

Don't judge me.

So where do you go for good hot food like that you could get quickly and it isn't deep fried?

A quick look at the Handspring Visor and the Treo.

I was a huge Palm user back in the day, and absolutely loved the Visors when they came out - bigger, more capability, and an expansion slot! It really was the predecessor to the Treo.

Did a quicky blurb on one from my collection.

(If you're curious about the Treo, here's the one about that. Honestly my favorite piece of mobile gear I've ever owned. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/I-LkSK1KDgs )

What is wrong with my Roofnest? Leaked like whoah in rain.

Hey roof-folk! I recently picked up a used first-generation roofnest. I'm not intimately familiar with these, and of course, I set it up the first night, and it leaked like a sieve through the night.

In the middle of hte night I fashioned a support stick to 'hold open' the clamshell and the front frame component, which helped a bit, but it was still leaking / pooling water through the 'roof' zipper.

I'm wondering if this is not tensioned right - I assume the roof surface should have sheeted off the rain, but it was either pooling or something else was wrong.

Could be the gas risers are worn out and it was not holding the roof taught?

I have to say, aside from the leaking, the tent was remarkably warm and cozy. I used to have a Smittybilt XL on my jeep, which was... okay, but took too long to set up and tear down, and to put the big assed cover on it, but it was not exactly warm. The hardshell in the Roofnest is definitely warmer, but if this tent is just tuckered out (I know it was used a LOT before I got it. It may just be knackered).

So, did i do something wrong? Or is this tent just worn out? Note in the first pic you can see slack material in the roof - but it's under the fly - shouldn't the fly have kept it dry?

Okay, what do ya'll use for 'Burrito'?

Because Dr Bill has a... slightly awkward post for this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aIwPGISdt1Q - which I can't use without giggling like a 13yo.

There's an note that generally miming rollig up a burrito with both hands is acceptible. Fingerspelling is obviously an option, but that's a long word.

So, what do ya'll use?

Proper process for dock lines when entering or leaving a slip

So we're sailing our beneteau 34.1 (not TECHNICALLY ours, but close enough). I'm the more experienced sailor, my wife is learning. When going through our ASA classes, we were taught something I hadn't learned before, i'd like folks' opinions.

Scenario - we're leaving the slip, fenders on the starboard side. What we were taught was loop the aft dock line over the dock cleat, and put the boat in idle-forward. That puts tension on that line, and naturally pulls the boat against the dock. When departing, just back out, the line comes clear, and you're off on your merry way.

For returning, process is the same, reversed. Maneuver into the slip, with an oh so gentle nudge on the fenders, your line handler goes onto the dock, loops the aft dock line, idle-forward, boat stays nudged up against the dock while you secure the rest of your lines.

The departure process worked perfectly for us a couple times, the arrival was a little rockier. I feel like setting the spring line on returning might make more sense, but that may cause the aft end to swing out, yes?

This trick of using the aft dock line seems a cheat code. Not only does it hold your boat in place, it holds it up against the dock, on the fenders, while you set everything else up.

What are ya'lls thoughts on this?

I'm looking forward to after gathering enough experience i'll be able to single-hand the line handling, tossing the line over the dock cleat as I come into the slip - that would necessitate tying off both ends of the line to make a loop (I can't hold it while working controls) - is this a normal thing?

Input welcome! Thanks!

Hot Take - the X1 Carbon Gen 11 is the best linux laptop I've ever used.

Okay lets be clear here. I'm an old sk00l linux / unix / minicomputer nerd. Been at this a long time (50+years). So I've seen a lot of hardware come and go.

Recently, Apple has made 'unix on the desktop' a reality, and done a bang up job. However, it comes with... Apple, which can be an objectionable company, and an eye-watering price tag.

I picked up a Gen6 X1 for a song a few months ago and sort of fell in love with it. The form factor, the excellent design - I've been using Thinkpads and their kin for years, but this was my first exposure to a relatively modern ultralite.

I decided to upgrade from the Gen6 and found hte 'sweet spot' to be the Gen 11. After a bit of shopping, I found a Gen 11 with 16gig RAM, 512gig disk, and a great warranty for $695. I bought it. Added anoter 16gig, and here I am. (MY BAD - I bought it with 32gig. I was mixing up two project. Great price anyway :)

I repartioned the drive so still have Windows if I need it (like 100gig worth) but the rest is running Ubuntu, and folks, it's been fantastic.

This machine is elegant, fast, comfortable to use, has a great keyboard, a beautiful screen (TOUCH SCREEN!), and Just Plain Works.

I've docked it with multiple monitors, used fixed and wifi networking, even got the fingerprint reader working for unlock. Ubuntu is clean as a whistle on it, and I'm able to do my development, Zoom calls, documentation, mail, browsing, and even some light gaming on it. All for $750 (including the price of the RAM).

Do I have gripes? Maybe 1-2.

The battery seems... slightly iffy. I have it in balanced power mode, but I only get an hour and a half or so of heavy use before I need to plug in. That seems low. I'll run a battery test on it at some point.

I sort of wish it had an SD slot (my MBP did), but that's pretty minor.

Edit: Oh one other gripe. The speakers are meh. Maybe I'm spoiled by the MBP speaker system. These are 'ok' but could be a lot better (the Gen6 speakers were GOD AWFUL, so I'm counting my blessings)

I think the Gen 11 was the sweet spot price / performance wise. Would I have liked a Gen 13 with an OLED display? I guess. But this is just fine.

Can I make this 9" pan non-stick?

I love omlettes. I love eggs. I love making stuff in this pan, and to be honest, my omlettes are pretty durned good if I say so myself.

What I don't have is a proper 'non stick' surface though. There's all these great instructionals about sliding around the cooked eggs on the pan to get an even cook, but even with oil and seasoning, I never get that experience with this pan.

Do I need to go the Dark Route and get myself a stainless steel pan?

Suddenly having a lot of time, can I work?

So my job unexpectedly ended - this wans't planned, I'm 61 years old, planning on retiring in a few years and sailing / cruising as much as I can, but this is a bit of a bump.

I'm trying to figure out if i can find a job somewhere relatively nearby where I can continue logging hours for my sixpack license. Finding something that is suitable for an older person is hard (you can work as deckhands / mechanics / service, but I don't think my body is up for this).

I really would love to work as a launch operator or similar, since I'm very comfortable moving stuff around and driving, but virtually all of them require a captains license, which I don't have yet.

I live in the northeast US inside an hour from boston, so there's CT, RI, MA, NH, and ME to work with.

Heck I'd be up for doing a couple weeks asea even.

It's really not delivery season, and that's always a challenging prospect - you're never sure what you're going to get, but is that my best option for either unpaid or lightly paid gigs that let me log hours and get experience?

It's been a helluva year, lemme tel ya.

I'd love to have some radioactive green storage shelves and cases for my tools to match the rest of the toxic waste look, but the LINK toolboxes are hideously overpriced.

DTO has a 2 drawer box for $79 - down from $109. For a 12" x 19" x 16" plastic box.

A 2 drawer, hinge top, steel box goes for $60-ish in any other circumstances.

Given that Ryobi is supposed to be the budget friendly high quality toolset - why are these things so overpriced?

Okay okay I totally did the clicky-thumbnail. It's all the rage in youtube nowadays. But this is my favorite computer in my collection, so it was cool doing a tech breakdown and also looking into why the machine was a commercial failure.
