My Gen 3 'Ink' Smart Typewriter Had Some Surgery and I Need to Talk About It ...

TL/DR: Grab a beverage and a snack, settle in. This is going to be a long one. I wrote this post with the aim of helping other Smart Typewriter owners get the most out of their Freewrite devices. You can, in fact, replace the battery and customise/upgrade the typing experience on your Smart Typewriters, especially with some expert help along the way. Look out for my future post that will feature a video from the tech expert who performed the surgery, plus a bonus typing test on my modified Gen 3 Ink! This post has not been sponsored by anyone, nor have I been gifted any product. These are my own thoughts & experiences, for better or for worse.

This post also makes feature suggestions for the next generation of the Smart Typewriter, speculates about the future of Astrohaus as a company and discusses new, competing products that are popping up in the distraction-free writing space like the BYOK and ZeroWriter Fold. The detail in this post is fairly exhaustive, and is deliberately so. It is not for the weak. Consider yourself warned.

TL/DR Part 2:  Okay! Fine! You convinced me! Here is a picture of the stock battery that came with my Gen 3 Smart Typewriter, along with the packaging of the battery that replaced it. If the media is lost by the time you read this post, the print on the front of the stock battery reads 'HPL 755590 5200 mAh 3.7V 20230427'. It has three connection points on the left hand side of the battery with red, yellow and black wires and measures approx 85 mm x 53 mm x 4 mm. The printed text on the front of the replacement battery packaging reads TS-B061/ 906090.7V 6000 mAH Lithium ion polymer battery connector type: PH2.0. May god have mercy on your soul.

A word of warning before we begin – the procedure I am about to describe may void your extended warranty with Astrohaus. My Gen 3 Smart Typewriter ‘Ink’ is out of warranty, so I can throw caution to the wind and mess about as much as I like. Proceed with any custom modifications (except for something non-invasive like keycaps) with caution.

Hello my fellow Freewrite(rs) … I must kick this post off with a confession. I do not use my Smart Typewriter (Gen 3, Ink special edition) nearly as much as I should. I paid a king’s ransom to get it to Australia, only to embark on a screenwriting project which saw me working exclusively on my laptop with Final Draft. During this time, I would just leave my Ink in sleep mode unless I was using it to take research notes for my screenplay. I did not power it down completely. Every couple of months, it would display the low battery screen. I would dutifully plug it in to charge and then not unplug it for god knows how long. Basically, I was playing Russian Roulette with the battery’s lifespan when I probably should have just powered it off & stored it away in its felt sleeve. Instead, in my infinite wisdom, I left it on my little laptop table lap cushion thing in the corner of the lounge room to taunt myself into using it.

It was also during this time that I began to wonder if I had just wasted a significant amount of money. I was deep in second draft revisions for my debut screenplay, a hugely consuming process which did not involve my Ink at all. I first discovered Astrohaus & the Freewrite devices thanks to indie author Lidiya Foxglove over on her YouTube channel, The Cozy Creative. Lidiya (not her real name) was discussing her writing process and happened to mention her Freewrite Traveler.

Subsequent YouTube searches led me to discover Michael Jecks and his YouTube channel Writerly Witterings. Michael is a historical and crime fiction author based in the UK. He is also a staunch advocate for the Freewrite Smart Typewriter as a full-time author who drafted twenty novels on his Gen 2 before it finally died of battery issues after many years of regular use. Astrohaus then provided him with a Gen 3 Smart Typewriter free of charge – probably after all the promotion he’s given them over the years. It is also worth noting that he has an affiliate code with Astrohaus from which he receives a small commission. Michael’s content is unpretentious in its production values and rather wonderful as a result – if you found this post and are considering purchasing a Smart Typewriter, I would highly recommend checking out Michael’s channel. You can find Michael’s thoughts on the Gen 3 here and his thoughts on the latest firmware update ‘Sailfish’ here.

In the proud tradition of every creative who is avoiding actually doing their creative work, I found every reason under the sun not to use my Ink. My biggest fixation was on the keycaps. I couldn’t see the lettering on the stock black-on-black keycaps on the Ink easily, as cool as they looked. I set out on a mission to find my perfect keycaps, eventually landing on this 'Mocha' set from Osume which lent a vintage, distinguished and somewhat gothic air to my Ink. Osume ‘marshmallow’ profile keycaps are fantastic companions for the Smart Typewriter and I highly recommend them.

Almost as soon as I was done putting the Osume Mocha Marshmallow keycaps on my Ink, I found myself unsatisfied with the sound and feel of the stock Kaihl Box Brown switches. For those who did not fall down the mechanical keyboard rabbit hole as I did, Kaihl Box Brown switches are mechanical, lightly tactile switches. Brown switches are a common, low-cost stock switch included in many pre-assembled mechanical keyboards by a plethora of keyboard manufacturers. Tactile switches contain a bump as the key is pressed, which can be felt by the user – hence the name. They tend to be more popular with typists as the tactile bump provides feedback, letting the typist know the key has been pressed. This is supposed to help with speed and accuracy. My Ink was my gateway drug into mechanical keyboards, and I know a lot more about my preferences after two years into ‘the worst hobby on the internet’ than I did at the beginning of my mechanical keyboard adventures. I decided I didn’t want to buy new switches just for my Ink – I had so many sets of switches that weren’t in use that I made a deal with myself. I would only have my Ink modified if I didn’t spend any more money on parts. I selected some switches from my existing collection – in this case my Gateron Baby Kangaroo V2’s, the first ever switches I had hand lubed and filmed. I still loved my BK’s but couldn’t see myself putting them in a new mechanical keyboard build any time soon. That made them the perfect candidate to enjoy a second life inside my Ink. If you are looking for tactile switch recommendations that are a little more budget friendly and feel great to type on, I’ve tested a bunch and my favourite were the Akko Creamy Purple Pros (which has recently been superseded by the Creamy Purple U1). If you want a 'clicky' typing experience that sounds more like an old fashioned typewriter, I would go with the Gateron Melodics. When it comes to silent switches, I don't have much experience with them but TTC Silent Bluish Whites V2s are keyboard enthusiast favourites in the silent switch category.

I started researching how my Ink could be modified, wanting to know if anyone else had embarked on such a mission in the past. I found a series of YouTube videos posted by a lady trying to replace the battery in her Gen 2 Smart Typewriter. You can find Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3 of her adventures on YouTube.

I found a post on Reddit about a sale listing for a Smart Typewriter which seemed to feature frankenswitches. A frankenswitch is when you combine parts from two different switches to make a new switch. At first I thought all I could do was frankenswitch the stock Kaihl Box Browns with a different type of Kaihl switch. That is when I reached out to the wondrous SwitchDoctor, aka Karly. Karly is an amazing custom mechanical keyboard assembly and retro tech repair wizard located in Victoria, Australia. After a bit more research, Karly & I agreed that it was better to desolder the stock Kaihl Box Browns and solder the Gateron Baby Kangaroos in their place. I also wanted to replace the battery – if my Ink was going to have some surgery, I thought it would be a good idea to replace the stock battery at the same time (even though it wasn’t strictly necessary just yet). I packed up my Ink in a small mountain of paper along with my Baby Kangaroo switches and shipped them off to Karly.

After cracking open my Ink for the first time and getting a look at the innards, Karly presented me with two options for replacement batteries:

Option one was sourced from Amazon and would fit perfectly inside the battery compartment of my Ink. The downside was that it only had a two-pin connector, not a three pin like the stock battery. Karly said that she could switch the BMS (do not know what this means, I am consulting the Discord chat for this one) from the original stock battery to this new battery to make it work. The caveat was that it had to be done carefully to ‘avoid any dramas’.

Option two was from a niche small business in Australia. Unlike option one, it had a three wires/pins BUT it was potentially very slightly too large for the battery compartment. The orientation of the wires was also in the opposite direction to what my Ink required, and she would need to swap them, but she informed me that it was an easy task to accomplish.

I decided to take the risk and bought option two. When Karly received it, she went to work straight away. She informed me it was slightly too large to fit in the battery compartment of my Ink (as suspected), but that she could modify one wall of the compartment to make it fit if that is what I wanted. I gave her the go ahead to modify one wall of the battery compartment. She told me so could also add in some connectors which would make it easier to replace the battery in the future, and I agreed. She also offered to replace the stock stabilizers with some TX stabilizers she had on hand, and I agreed to that as well. All up, the modification work would cost me around $117 AUD. For context that is around $84 USD, $72 EUR or $63 GBP for the cost of labour & new stabilizers (this figure does not include the cost of the replacement battery, the Baby Kangaroo switches, the Osume keycaps or the return shipping costs).

This is WILDLY more affordable for me than sending it back to the US for Astrohaus to service. To even get my Ink to the US, it would cost me $200 – $300 AUD via courier, never mind the cost of repairs, replacement parts or return postage to Australia. I must admit, Astrohaus were not super helpful with this process. When I emailed their customer service to ask what kind of battery was in the Gen 3 Smart Typewriters, all I got back was that it was a ‘5200maH LI-ION polymer battery,’ and they were not sure of the specific make or model. For those who did not catch it at the top of the post, I took a picture of my Gen 3 Ink's stock battery for your reference. I want to say the response I got from Astrohaus was merely the result of a customer service person attempting to answer a technical question. But what it sounds like is a company who would rather their consumer base upgrade to the latest model rather than have a right to repair and replace parts for their existing devices. I know this is what every company engages in to maximise profits these days – planned obsolescence, subscription-based models for services like Freewrite Plus etc. It’s just kinda shitty. Which is why I am writing this post in the first place. I wanted to share my experience of this whole process in the hope that it helps others with this niche device to know that you do have options to upgrade, modify and extend the life of your Smart Typewriter.

Thankfully, Karly was more helpful than Astrohaus customer support. Without her research and expert advice, I would have wasted a lot of money buying incompatible replacement batteries. If you live in Australia, I can’t recommend Karly’s services enough. If you live outside of Australia and are interested in getting your Smart Typewriter modified in a similar fashion, I would highly encourage you to seek out your nearest mechanical keyboard expert or someone who specialises in repairing and restoring older tech or gaming devices. They are the folk who will most likely be able to help you out if this sort of tinkering is beyond your own expertise.

To top it all off, Karly is a content creator and was the first to suggest filming my Ink’s surgical procedure to help spread community awareness about how to safely replace the battery. Considering how long this post has become, I will create a separate, much shorter post showcasing Karly's video when the editing is complete and the video is ready to post.

Some final notes from Karly regarding these modifications for the keyboard aficionados and mod enthusiasts:

When the battery is replaced again, the battery will require a JST PH2.0 (3 pins) connector. The connector Karly used in this particular modification can be found here.

A TX Plate Mount Stabilizer Kit was used in place of the original stabilizers for these modifications. However, you need to use the stock wire for the spacebar as it’s a non-standard size. Karly has speculated the spacebar wire for the Gen 3 Smart Typewriter may be a 6u in size.

THIS IS IT!!! I have, in fact, fully pimped my ride. The difference in typing experience is one I had to feel and hear for myself to believe. The typing experience now is so much more solid and consistent, it's like typing on a completely different machine. My Ink has achieved its final form. New battery. New switches. New stabilizers. New keycaps. Sailfish firmware upgrade installed. If I were to have further modifications made to my Ink, it would be to change the switches again as a matter of preference or to replace the battery when the time comes.

There is just one question that remains.

What’s next?

Astrohaus released the third generation of the Smart Typewriter in 2022. A fourth generation of the Smart Typewriter is surely not too far away now we over are halfway through the Year of Our Lord 2026. The prototype for what was originally known as ‘The Hemingwrite’ (later renamed to the Smart Typewriter as this was not a licensed collaboration with the Hemingway Estate at the time) was launched on Kickstarter by Astrohaus in late 2014. The second generation of the Smart Typewriter was launched in 2018. And then came the third generation in 2022, showing a four-year product cycle between generations. In the last four years, Astrohaus seemed to focus on launching new products like the Alpha & Wordrunner as well as rebuilding the firmware from the ground up with Sailfish. The Smart Typewriter has seen several special editions released during this time. The Hemingway (now an official licensed collaboration with the Hemingway Estate) special edition has been consistently available, but other limited special editions include a ‘Sea’ themed blue version, an all-white version, a yellow ‘Lemon’ & a green ‘Mint’ edition as well as my beloved all black ‘Ink’. The current limited special edition is the blazing red ‘Valentine’.

So ... What could POSSIBLY make me part with more money to ‘upgrade’ to a fourth generation of the Smart Typewriter? If any Astrohaus employee has swallowed the bitter pill of my feedback and made it this far down my post – listen up.

A Gen 4 keyboard should be hot-swappable: As Astrohaus learned with Wordrunner, keyboard enthusiasts (like myself) value customisation over anything else. Please, for the LOVE OF GOD make a Gen 4 Smart Typewriter with a hot-swappable keyboard. For those who don’t know what that is, a hot-swappable keyboard means that you can manually yank out the stock switches that the device comes with and easily replace them with compatible switches of your choice. That way it is possible and super easy for users to change switches and customise their typing experience as many times as required until they find their ideal switch. This is especially handy for people who enjoy writing in shared or public spaces and may need to use silent switches in their Smart Typewriter. This is standard in the mechanical keyboard world and it would be vaguely embarrassing and out of touch for Astrohaus to continue to release Smart Typewriters with soldered switches.

A Gen 4 battery needs to be user-friendly to replace: Also – the battery. Please create a discrete compartment that is easily accessible from the outside of the device so we can replace the battery ourselves and don’t need to be experts in consumer electronics to swap it out. This is in line with the recent legislation passed in the EU that requires phone and tablet manufacturers to use batteries that are easily replaceable by the user, and that companies must continue to sell replacement batteries up to five years after the last unit of production is placed on the market. It’s enforceable as of February 2027, so it makes sense for the future generations of any Astrohaus Freewrite device to feature a battery that is easy to replace by the user, and that Astrohaus continue to sell replacement batteries for these devices. Now – it’s entirely possible these new laws don’t apply to the kind of devices Astrohaus produce. But it would be a huge dick move and a middle finger to consumers if they don’t change their approach to batteries. Competing products like the BYOK and ZeroWriter Ink are designed with easy to replace batteries and the end user in mind. If they don’t change their approach to batteries and the repair & replace movement in general, Astrohaus risk getting left behind in the niche field that they once used to lead & dominate.

A Gen 4 should feature an upgraded or updated e-ink screen: Upgrading the e-ink screen would also be a compelling reason to purchase a Gen 4 Smart Typewriter. With the launch of competing devices like the ZeroWriter Ink, ZeroWriter Fold & newcomer Auteur, it makes sense for Astrohaus to upgrade the screen of their Smart Typewriter to reflect any advancements, improvements or changes in e-ink technology. I say this with the confidence of someone who has no idea if there have been any advancements in e-ink technology recently, but upgrading the hardware on the next generation of a product is one way to make an argument for purchasing a Gen 4 Smart Typewriter.

A Gen 4 would ideally feature an amber backlight: It is a truth universally acknowledged that amber lighting is easier on the eyes than blue light. This is more of a 'nice to have' change, but Gen 3 Freewrites have a more cold or blue backlight. I've been enjoying using the amber backlight on my BYOK, so it would be great to see that in a Gen 4 Smart Typwriter.

A Gen 4 could feature exclusive custom switches: For more left field things that would genuinely impress me – collaborate with a switch company like Gateron or Kaihl to create a bespoke Freewrite switch. There could potentially be a range of switches – one that replicates the typing experience on a typewriter from the early to mid-20^(th) century. Or they could design a switch that mimics the mechanical keyboard typing experience of the 80’s & 90’s etc. Astrohaus could then make these switches stock options with the next generation of Smart Typewriters that consumers can select during the purchase process.  They could also potentially sell them exclusively on the Freewrite website, as they would be cherry MX style and backwards compatible with older Smart Typewriter models.

A Gen 4 would ideally have spare set of keycaps offered at a discounted rate with every new unit purchased: This is a 'nice to have', but worth mentioning. This isn't so much about keycaps wearing out. Any mechanical keyboard enthusiast knows we will be buried with our treasure trove of tiny pieces of plastic. It's more about the fact that many of the keycaps on a Smart Typewriter are custom shapes and sizes unique to Astrohaus. That way, if a keycap gets lost or damaged you have a spare set that is matched to your unit - by this I mean that if you buy a special edition, you get a spare set of keycaps that match the keycaps for that special edition. That means black-on-black keycaps for something like the Ink, pale yellow for the Lemon, pale green for the Mint, pale blue for the Sea etc etc.

Overhaul & update the firmware for Gen 2 Smart Typewriters: And if they really wanted to impress me (and why would they?) – release an equivalent version of Sailfish that is compatible with Gen 2 devices. I’m not sure if this is possible as I am not a code or technical person. Sailfish is already being pitched as an act of company goodwill by providing it for free to Gen 3 owners, but older devices are still in circulation in the second-hand market, and they deserve some love too. Does this make sense from a business perspective? Definitely not. Will it generate some much-needed goodwill towards Astrohaus, given all the criticism they have received over the last couple of years for their high prices and relatively poor customer service? Maybe. It’s entirely possible the Gen 2 hardware can’t support firmware like that found in Sailfish, but I still think Gen 2 devices deserve a firmware upgrade so they can experience the best possible performance when using their Smart Typewriters.

In the time since I first began drafting this post, there have been a couple of significant developments. Chief among them is the newest product launch from Astrohaus - which was, drumroll please ... a notebook. A disc bound notebook. Which is fine for some, but I'm left handed and products like this are the bane of my existence. My preferred notebooks feature traditional binding in a leather cover (like Paper Republic) OR are the perforated leaf kind that you can tear off the top of the notepad.

It is also worth noting that as more reviews of the BYOK have come out, Freewrite devotee Michael Jecks has stated that he considers the BYOK better value for money than a Freewrite Traveler.

The ZeroWriter Fold has also had a highly successful Kickstarter campaign, with over 800 backers and finishing just shy of raising $250k USD. I backed this project despite my wobbly start with my ZeroWriter Ink (future posts about my Ink to come to r/zerowriter and r/writerdeck) as Adam and his team are super dedicated to providing incredible customer service and support. As for what I ordered? I ordered my ZeroWriter Fold in the Limited Retro Edition (transparent purple mold injection housing for my elder millennial soul) with some sweet Sunset Choc tactile switches and the standard white PBT keycaps. Adam is also using a third party pledge management tool called Backerkit so people can finalise the details of their orders as close as possible to their shipping date. This is ideal for me, as I have been waiting for the silent version of the Sunset Choc tactile switches to come out for some time. If the silent version of these switches (called 'Sunrise') are available through Adam's partnership with his friend Darryl over at lowprokb in Canada by the time my Fold is ready to ship, I will definitely be modifying my order for my Fold to ship with the Sunrise switches pre-installed.

I have also noticed an uptick in posts here on Reddit about poor communication and customer service around the Wordrunner Kickstarter from Astrohaus. It's crazy to me that a relatively new, small company like ZeroWriter manages to run a far better and smoother Kickstarter campaign than a more established company like Astrohaus.

I have now had the opportunity to use Backerkit to modify my ZeroWriter Fold order, and it was super easy to add a leather carry case to my order and see my shipping costs to Australia. There was also a timeline estimate for delivery, which for me is February 2027. Adam has also made it super clear that no charge will be made to anyone's credit cards until their unit to ready to ship, which is really reassuring. Absolutely huge props and congratulations to Adam and the ZeroWriter team for how they have handled the ZeroWriter Fold Kickstarter campaign - even when things have taken longer than expected they have been super clear with communication and everything has worked pretty seamlessly for me.

I have to say, if you are considering buying an Astrohaus product I can only recommend the Smart Typewriter (especially if there is a Limited Edition version that appeals to you). Even then, a new competitor called Auteur that features an e-ink screen and a similar design is due to launch soon on Crowd Supply. If you want a portable device, I would recommend either the ZeroWriter Fold for the e-ink crowd, or the BYOK for those who prefer an LCD screen, the option of integrated writing software and a customisable typing experience.

If I had a message for Astrohaus, it would be that you have a huge opportunity as a brand right now. Listen to your user base. Implement suggested changes to new models as much as practically possible. Show your consumer base you stand behind your products and are actually concerned about a user's after-sales experience. Consider offering one free repair & battery replacement for every Astrohaus device, regardless of model, generation or how you bought it. SOMETHING. Your reputation is terrible amongst some users, and other more agile companies with more affordable products and better customer service are coming for your niche. We don't want another meaningless collaboration. We want genuine change that focuses on providing a quality product with high touch customer service. Otherwise consumers will take their money elsewhere.

Phew – that’s a wrap! It’s suffice to say I absolutely love typing on my Ink these days. If you’ve lasted through all 4k+ words of this post – congratulations and thank you for reading! I hope this helps anyone who is looking to modify their Smart Typewriters in the future. Look out for a separate post with a video from Karly showing the whole battery replacement procedure, plus a typing test!

In this post I will literally beg you all to become your own complexion mixologists. The results (& savings) are worth it!

I want to start this post off with a disclaimer - I am not looking to prise your favourite $75+ foundation from your cold, dead hands. If you have a perfect shade match that makes it look like you keep a waif of a french man imprisoned under your vanity and you only let him out to do your base in the morning, god speed friend.

This post was inspired by a lot of things. My redundancy, and my ongoing appetite for the *new*. Specifically, my desire for the reformulated RCMA liquid foundation. My Mum loves this foundation, but Scotty's is sold out of the OG formula in her shade. So I have been watching Scotty's RCMA page like a hawk, waiting for the new formula to come into stock. I contacted them months ago and they told me new stock was coming in June. June has come and gone, and all that seems to be happening is that they are dropping the price on the OG formula to clear the old stock. Fair enough. RCMA's US website it is.

It was just one line. One innocent line - that you could mix their rebranded, reformulated 'Red Carpet Ready Multimedia Foundation' with your favourite skin moisturiser to create a skin tint.

Now - this is not a new idea. At all. Ever. It's a pro MUA thing. I'm sure there is someone who has done this and started a trend on TikTok. I've been doing it for months with my Maybelline Lumi-Matte in shade 128 with a pump of L'Oreal Le Duo Serum. For reference, I have oily skin with a light neutral golden skin tone, and I prefer a light to medium coverage on a daily basis. Out of boredom and inspiration, today I mixed my new-to-me NYX Make 'Em Wonder Foundation in shade 10 Nude with a pump of an old bottle of TirTir Ceramic Milk Ampoule that I was going to declutter. I also decided to test my new-to-me NYX Wonder Snatch concealer in shade Cool Vanilla (side note - Cool Vanilla is a warm/yellow undertone and almost too light for me). I also like to use the NYX Bare With Me Concealer in the shade Medium Vanilla from time to time to adjust a foundation shade slightly or to use it under my eyes as intended.

And ... damn. DAMN. I am an oily skinned gal, but I'm also turning 40 soon, it's winter and I use prescription retinoids. So I'm a weird mix of surface dryness with skin that produces OIL more efficiently than a deep sea oil rig. But this combination? I look EXPENSIVE. Glowy but not oily. Like I just dropped rent on a facial at Biologique Recherche and regret nothing. And sure - the TirTir serum is far from being super affordable. But the NYX foundation and concealer are like ... $26.48 together if you can find a single shade match in both and pick them up during one of Priceline's regular half price sales. And the best part is ALL of these products combined cost less than my god tier combination of Lisa Eldridge Seamless Skin Foundation in shade 11 and Natasha Denona Hyglam Concealer in shade YP5 (which is maybe $120 + together?! YEESH) ... Whereas the NYX foundation, concealer and TirTir ampoule come out at around half that price at $60 ish. Sure - the shade match is not quite as perfect, but for half the price I am more than happy to have a slightly too light concealer and a foundation that is a touch too yellow for my skin tone.

If you are feeling the pinch and your favourite foundation or concealer runs out ... don't be scared to try something from Priceline or Chemist Warehouse. You might be just one skin care mix-in experiment away from getting the coverage and finish of your dreams!

Also - sound off in the comments. What combinations have you been lowkey gatekeeping for your skin tone and type?

BYOKers who bought the Clicks Power Keyboard - how have you found it with your BYOK?

The Clicks subreddit is full of grumbly, unsatisfied customers who are struggling to use the Clicks Power Keyboard with their smartphones.

But the BYOK is not a smartphone. Are there any BYOKers out there who have received their Clicks Power Keyboard and used it with their BYOKs? If so, would love to know your thoughts as mine is finally at the fulfilment stage.

PSA: Cake hair care old packaging on clearance at Priceline Martin Place Sydney CBD!

The title says it all. If you missed the introductory half price launch of Cake hair care at Priceline, this may be your second chance.

I was innocently browsing in Priceline Martin Place the other day and noticed they had a shelf up the back of the hair care section for clearance items. There was some John Freida too, but I was most interested in the Cake. I picked up so much that wasn’t listed online during the initial launch. It’s half price for the Cake stuff (approx $9-$12), and some John Freida is $5.

This seems to be a store specific thing in terms of which store has what kind of stock. I went to several Priceline stores in Chatswood and they didn’t have any Cake items on their clearance shelf. Worth checking out!

Is Noughty actually Noice? Round 8 of Cage Match Hair Care Reviews!

Today was a bit of a struggle street day. I was bloated. Hiding under a nest of blankets on the couch. Sipping some zero sugar cola on ice and binge watching Simon Baker being handsome & clever on 'The Mentalist'. But I knew I had a higher calling to attend to. Washing my hair and yapping about it on the internet.

Noughty is one of those brands that almost slipped past my notice. In the dying days of the last Priceline hair care sale, I decided to search for the term 'wave' in an effort to find hair care on sale that catered to my hair type (for the uninitiated I have an oily scalp and fine hair with 2A/2B waves).

That was how I stumbled across the brand 'Noughty'. They had a shampoo and conditioner set with the word 'wave' in it and thus were caught up in my search. It seems to be a UK brand that is made of 97% natural ingredients, vegan etc. I scooped up every product in the line that I could find that would suit my hair, with the exception of the gel cream which was sold out everywhere.

Today, I decided it was Noughty's chance at glory. My first shampoo was the OGX Pro Growth & Peptide Shampoo. I then followed up with the Wave Hello Shampoo, rinsed and applied the Wave Hello Conditioner to my mid-lengths and ends before allowing it to sit on my hair for five minutes. I did my usual routine of getting my hair to the point of being damp but not dripping, detangling with the UnBrush and then applying a ten cent sized piece of the Curl Taming Cream to my mid-lengths and ends and distributing the product with the UnBrush.

The first thing I noticed is that when I was both shampooing in the shower and detangling before applying styling product ... my hair was knottier and more prone to tangling. I had to be extra gentle and careful in a way that I don't have to with most of my hair care products. I checked the ingredients lists for all three products, and from what I can tell there are no silicones of any variety in any of these products and therefore there is far less slip. That might not matter for thicker hair types, but I don't know if I can recommend this for my fellow fine hair types that are prone to tangling.

There was more 'something is quite wrong' when I finished applying the curl cream to my mid-lengths and ends. I felt like the cream sort of sat on top of my hair. The wave pattern was lovely - no issues there. I would have to wait until it fully dried however to see the final result. Once my hair dried the results were ... fine? I got a decent wave pattern. My hair looked a little less smooth than usual, but it was soft with some shine. I have to say though, this is the first time I have been tempted to straight out eliminate a brand based on a single use. If you are looking for silicone free products, these may be great for you. But I don't know if they are for me.

I still have two more products from the range to try - the curl reviving spray and the scrunching jelly. I will try the shampoo and conditioner again in the future to try the other styling products, but I don't know if these products are for me.

Were my results bad? No. They were perfectly respectable - a passing grade. But the lack of silicones and slip makes me wary to keep using these products as someone with fine hair.

Round 8 Cage Match Results: Noughty Curl Taming Cream has been eliminated. I have way too many curl creams I prefer over this one to use it again. Shampoo and conditioner have been given a stay of execution until I can test other styling products from this line.

Previous Cage Match Rounds:

  1. Round 1 (Cake Curl Friend)
  2. Round 2 (Umberto Giannini Dreamy Waves)
  3. Round 3 (La'dor Herbalism)
  4. Round 4 (SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus)
  5. Round 5 (Dosetheory Ultra Gloss)
  6. Round 6 (evo Liquid Rollers)
  7. Round 7 (Umberto Giannini Thirsty Curls Cream)

I will try literally anything with the word 'Soufflé' in it: Round 7 of Cage Match Hair Care Reviews!

I come to you a humble servant of the people. And by that I mean I wanted to jiggle stuff around in a tub for my own personal amusement. Today, I am testing another leave-in product from the much beloved Umberto Giannini.

But first, a small confession - I've slipped into binge eating again. It's partly the 1 month 2 periods thing, part anxiety over the three networking catch ups I have this week. I am also meeting with my new career coach today. All of these meetings are forcing me to confront that fact that I haven't found a new job yet. While I'm not in a huge rush to return to work, I realise I need to start getting the word out there now with my old network. I'm loving waking up naturally, instead of jerking awake to my old alarm of 3:30 am. Watching movies. Taking a walk in the sun (when it deigns to shine upon me). Napping on the couch in the afternoon like the pampered house pet I aspire to be.

Anyway - enough wallowing. I decided to keep it in the family today. My first shampoo was with the OGX ProGrowth Peptide Shampoo. This was to help remove whatever was left of the evo Liquid Rollers balm from my mid-lengths and ends, as well as something a bit more clarifying for my scalp. I am getting to really enjoy this shampoo the more that I use it, so if you see this half price at Coles, Woolworths, Priceline or Chemist Warehouse do give it a go (especially if you have an oily scalp). I followed with the Umberto Giannini Dreamy Waves Shampoo and Conditioner. My method is consistent - apply conditioner to mid-lengths and ends, leave for five minutes and rinse. Detangle with the UnBrush.

I finally get to the fun part - the Umberto Giannini Thirsty Curls Soufflé Curl Cream. I feel like I never see anyone talk about this blue line of products from Umberto Giannini. They seem to be aimed at dry hair, which I don't really feel I have but the idea of a whipped style texture for a leave in product has me intrigued. So when it dropped down to $10 during the last Priceline sale, I snapped it up on the final day of the sale.

The texture did not disappoint. It's so WIBBLY. I love to just open the jar and shake it and watch it wobble and jiggle about, like Sara-Marie on Big Brother in 2001. I find it so entertaining. I took a tiny pinch of it, aware that I may overload my hair. I took a second pinch just to be sure I got enough, raked it through my hair and then distributed it with the UnBrush. I micro-plopped as usual and allowed to air dry.

A side note - the results from my evo Liquid Rollers day may be my favourite look so far. My hair was just so lovely and natural with great shine & shape for a couple of days. Even after sleeping on it, I just looked sort of naturally tousled rather than a child of neglect. I'm kinda mad because evo is NOT cheap. I might have to put some more things from their curly hair line on my wish list for my birthday or Christmas.

Despite being careful with not over applying, my curl pattern today was definitely more of a loose wave. My hair didn't feel weighed down at all, but it did lack some of the definition I know it's capable of. Once my hair was fully dry I enjoyed how it looked - it felt light, there was decent definition, good shine and minimal frizz. The overall results were good, but not amazing. That said, I bought this on sale knowing it potentially wasn't formulated with my particular hair type in mind. I may need to use less of it next time, but this is going on the chopping block for now.

Round 7 Cage Match Results: The Thirsty Curls Cream is up for elimination, pending one more use with less product applied next time.

I did in fact singe the bejeezers out of my waves: Round 6 of Cage Match Hair Care Reviews!

So, the last of my severance package money hit my account this week. It's all downhill from here. But I did apply for a new role that is actually a really good fit for me, and I'm having coffee with a former colleague who works high up in the company next week. Cross your fingers for me all.

And trust me, I need the love. I almost missed my routine and post today because I got my second period in a month. Don't worry - I've had all my blood work (including all the hormone & fertility tests) done recently and I am 100% normal & healthy. Which leaves stress as the culprit. So I allowed myself the grace of a blanket day today with a $10 Ding Dong Uber Eats treat (not sponsored just frugal) and the Twilight collection on Netflix. Incidentally ... the Twilight movie soundtrack(s) have no business being so good. I remember buying the CD when the first movie came out in cinemas and listening to it driving in my little white hatchback to my then-boyfriend's house after work. Ah, simpler times.

Now, as a part of my final hurrah with end stage capitalism, I purchased what may have been the absolute last unit of this discounted pack of evo curl styling products from Oz Hair & Beauty. I hit the shower when it was well past lunch already. But the cramps were getting me good and I was hoping the warm water would help me feel better.

I started off with the L'Oreal Metal Detox Shampoo I am determined to finish. Then followed with my evo Gluttony shampoo. Rinsed. evo Bride of Gluttony conditioner gets applied to my mid-lengths and ends, hop out of the shower for five minutes to marinate. Feel bloated and gross. Hop back in shower, rinse, body things blah blah blah.

I hobble out, pop some paracetamol and climb into some clean pyjamas. Then the true test comes - evo Liquid Rollers. A curl BALM. Even heavier than a cream. But the unhinged marketing catches my eye 'liquid rollers gives pride back to your beautiful curls that have hung dry and lonely since the last time you singed the bejeezers out of them'.

I did, in fact, blow dry my hair the last time I styled it. So ... I should give it a try? I used maybe a five cent piece amount with my usual technique of detangling with the UnBrush, applying the balm to the mid-lengths and ends and micro-plopping with my microfibre towel to remove excess water before allowing my waves to air dry. My waves clump readily and if you've ever tried evo products before, you know they smell absolutely AMAZING.

I know I enjoy evo as a brand. Yeah, they are a little pricey but if you can nab a gift pack from last year's holiday gifting collection you can get some pretty decent value for money. It was actually someone here on Reddit who recommended trying evo by buying it this way, so thank you internet stranger. I order all mine from Oz Hair & Beauty and haven't found something I truly disliked yet.

I wanted to eliminate Liquid Rollers. I did. Every time I use a curl cream or balm I always have to be extra vigilant not to over-apply, and I'm going to admit right now I am in my lazy era. But my hair was just ... too pretty? Soft. Defined with no crunch or weird residue. Shine. Good wave/curl pattern. Perfect for a lazy day. Sure, the results will probably be gone by the time I wake up tomorrow but who cares? I might try putting in even less next time as I did add a little more after the five cent piece amount as I forgot to detangle first with my UnBrush in my rush to finish before it got too late in the day. I can never trust myself to apply the correct amount of product for my needs the first time.

Round 6 Cage Match Results: evo Liquid Rollers rolls into the next round unchallenged.

It's the dose makes the magic: Round 5 of Hair Care Cage Match Reviews!

** It's the dose THAT makes the magic, goddamn mercury retrograde!!!

This week I have just crashed and burned with my energy levels. Maybe it's the redundancy finally emotionally hitting home as I'm out in these streets, reconnecting with my old network. But I am bone weary. And for some reason, I can only manage to book two of these catch up events in a single day. Which is time efficient, but emotionally brutal. Maybe it's the winter.

Truly, though? It's my fucking hot water. I tried to have a bath yesterday. Rejuvenate with a Butterball bath bomb from Lush and some epsom salts. My method is to turn on the hot water tap, fill 2/3rds of the way and then add cold water to taste. My hot water system is OLD. A member of the owner's committee came to inspect another issue in my flat last year and even he shaded my landlord for not replacing it, saying they replaced theirs in the unit across the way from me over a decade ago.

Anyway. It was fucking luke warm when I got in. No cold water required. It was ... tepid. The butter chunks in the bathbomb didn't even melt. I almost cried. I was left shivering in an almost cold, foamy, gritty, chunky soup for about ten minutes before I gave up and drained the whole thing.

Somehow, I managed to get a bit of slightly warmer than tepid water going for a shower. Normally I turn off the water and get out during my conditioner or mask stage so I don't waste water, but fuck that! I couldn't risk ending up with an entirely cold water stream during a cage match review day.

Which finally brings up to today's contestants - a brand from New Zealand called Dosetheory. Dosetheory operate on the idea of effective doses of ingredients in their formulas, and actually state their percentages of each active/star ingredient on the packaging. This takes me back to my early days of effective skin care research and getting into Paula's Choice products for the first time over a decade ago. I initially encountered the brand on TikTok and found them on the shelf in my local Coles. I waited for them to come up on sale - they don't always get the half price treatment, but you can more reliably find them 40% off or two for $16, which is *almost* half price. I picked up the Ultra Gloss Shampoo, Ultra Gloss Conditioner, Moisture Mask and Ultra Gloss Shine Spray.

I washed first with my L'Oreal Metal Detox Shampoo, and followed with the Ultra Gloss Shampoo. The Moisture Mask I had applied to my wet hair before getting in the bath to protect my hair from all my bathing sensory delights. And here's the thing - when I read that shea butter is an ingredient in a conditioner or mask, I automatically slow my roll. With my fine hair, shea butter products can be overwhelming so I tend to take care when applying them. But these Dosetheory products are .... sort of whipped? Soft? Not quite a mousse but they are so pleasantly pillowy and light for shea butter products. This applies to both the mask and the conditioner. The texture is just delightful, and very much fine hair friendly. My waves clumped readily and easily with both the mask and the conditioner, and all in all I was just really impressed. The conditioner & mask in particular felt like a much more expensive product. The packaging is streamlined and basic, but I am finding it hard to criticise any of these products. They are affordable, transparent with their ingredients and the results? Well ...

I had some drinks with a creative writing group I recently joined last night, and more networking coffees today. So I decided to blow dry my hair straight ahead of the drinks last night, with the hope it would last well and roll into a polished look for networking coffees today. After getting out of the shower I applied the OGX Bond Repair Spray to my mid-lengths and ends. I distributed it through my hair with the UnBrush as usual. I liked the spray - it had a light scent, and did a decent job. The continuous mist certainly is more to my taste than a standard spray bottle. Do I like it more than my beloved Lush Super Milk? I mean ... The Lush Super Milk is more pleasant to use as the fragrance is divine, and both work well as a heat protectant. Lush is only a heat protectant for the 200 degree range of heat (IIRC), but OGX is up there in the 400's. I don't use straighteners or curling wands that get super hot. I'm a hair dryer or Dyson AirWrap gal. So I will probably stick with Lush for now, but I can see myself reaching for the OGX in the future. It's thin, lightweight and just ... works? No sticky residue, easy to apply. Absorbs completely. Weightless. If you are looking for a heat protectant spray and are willing to wait for this to come up on half price sale when it's under $20, I mean ... I can see why this is so popular. It's affordable (when on sale), widely available and does the job with the bonus of the continuous mister for easy application.

Once my hair was dry, I went a bit nuts with the Ultra Gloss spray. My hair almost got a little damp again. This gives great shine. It helps smooth fly aways, but it doesn't replace using a hair oil IMO. Smoothing? Yes. Ultra smoothing, especially in damp weather? Eh. It did well, but it didn't eliminate frizz entirely for me on a damp Sydney evening. I have to give it props though - it falls into the category of one of the few products I am willing to apply to my fine hair once it's dry. If you can catch this spray on sale at Coles and you have fine hair, definitely pick it up. It gives fantastic shine, helps smooth fly aways and doesn't weigh your hair down at all.

All in all, I want to try more from this range. I'm hunting for my ideal scalp friendly second shampoo. I think I will try the Dosetheory Lush Growth range the next time I see it on sale at Coles. I might even test Ultra Gloss against L'Oreal Glycolic Gloss and Lush Growth against L'Oreal Growth Booster if the sales gods align.

Round 5 Cage Match Results: It's almost a clean sweep this round. The Ultra Gloss Shampoo, Conditioner & Shine Spray all make it through to the next round along with the OGX Bond Repair spray. The Moisture Mask is on the chopping block, as I feel the SheaMoisture masque may be a better option for my waves. Only further testing will tell for sure.

I had the shea audacity to try SheaMoisture: Round 4 of the Cage Match Hair Care Reviews!

I have to admit - I've had the SheaMoisture products that I'm about to mention in this post for a while. But that's good news - it means this post is more than just my usual first impression before I have to move on to the next. The standard disclaimers apply - these words and experiences are my own. I bought the products with my own money. This post is not sponsored. Yadda yadda yadda etc etc.

This morning's routine was pure sacrifice for the good of the people. I got up at 6 am - which should have been fine in theory. In my old job, I was up and out the door long before 6 am (yes, I know, no wonder I'm burned out). But my apartment is not heated and my ancient bathroom hasn't seen any new technology or renovations since 1984. I shivered in the mildly warm water and hurried through my routine, sticking with L'Oreal Metal Detox Shampoo and following with Cake Curl Friend Shampoo for the smell and to feel some spark of joy.

Parts of me were purple and blue with cold, so I took a fifty cent size amount of the SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Shine Hair Masque in my fingers, mixed it with water to thin out the texture (it's THICK) and worked it through my mid-lengths and ends. I hopped out of the shower for five minutes in my towel and sat on the couch, pondering what life decisions led me to this point. I then got back in the shower, rinsed and hopped out. I did my usual scrunching out of excess water with my trusty Kmart microfibre towel. I then de-tangled with my UnBrush and applied one pump of the SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Frizz Free Curl Mousse to each side of my head. I divided a third pump between my hands and smoothed a final half pump to each side of my head before distributing through with the UnBrush and micro-plopping to remove excess water from my hair.

The smell of these products gives peak holiday in Hawaii. I've only been there once, and I made the mistake of going on a dinner date with one of my tour guides. I would say don't judge me, but feel free to judge the fuck out of me for that. Don't go on a date with your tour guide. In my defence, I was in my mid 20's at the time. It was a learning experience. Or something.

Today was an errands and networking day, and I was already feeling nervous. The appointments were networking coffee catch-ups with former colleagues ... both were lovely, but I am mentally preparing for a longer period of funemployment than I may have experienced in the past. No matter - I have my creative pursuits, and an apartment that is in dire need of decluttering.

And I don't want to disappoint those who have followed my journey from my initial Abbey Yung experiments but ... I'm back in touch with my ex-situationship that inspired this hair glow up in the first place. Yeah. I know. Stay tuned for future instalments and updates on that front.

Back to the SheaMoisture ... I use these products if I want a guaranteed good hair day. I thought at first that they were too heavy for my fine hair (hence the audacity to try them in the first place) but I don't regret giving them a go, as they give great definition, shine and hold. Even shoving my hair back in a loose bun on my way home from my second networking coffee didn't do too much damage to my wave pattern. The Coconut & Hibiscus line from SheaMoisture is definitely worth a try, even if your hair is more fine than full or more wavy than curly. As always - wish list and wait for a sale! I'm tempted to pick up the shampoo and conditioner from the same line next time they pop up on my radar. Until my next instalment - stay safe & dry out there!

Round 4 Cage Match Results: Almost forgot this bit! Both the masque and the mousse proceed to the next round, and may be the ones to challenge Umberto Giannini Dreamy Waves for supremacy.

J'adore La'dor Herbalism: Round 3 of the Cage Match Hair Care Reviews!

Happy Sunday Scaries everyone! As I go along with these posts, I will be refining my process. I've noticed the frequent washing has resulted in my scalp itching and tingling a bit, so I suspect I will have to slow down and wash/test every second day. My scalp has always leaned towards the more sensitive side since I was a kid, so I'm going to slow down now before I create a problem for myself.

Right. Onward. I have my first few networking/catch up meetings with former colleagues this coming week. Some of these people I haven't seen or spoken to in over five years, and I have to admit, I'm nervous. I'm also struggling with motivation to look for work. Burn out has hit me hard, and I'm feeling exhausted most days. My former role was extremely high stress, and it seems that even after a month my body is still needing more rest than anything else.

Having said that, writing these reviews is bringing me so much joy. Thank you to all those who are following along in my search for perfect hair to make my ex-situationship regret every decision he has ever made in his life. It fills my black, deadened heart with such happiness and spite at the same time.

That brings me to today's Cage Match contestants.

This brand takes us to South Korea. La'dor has something of a reputation as being a bit more of a premium or luxury brand in the Korean beauty space. They are also stocked at Lila Beauty, and since I am a huge fan of Korean skin care, it followed that I would want to try their hair care as well. I was browsing Lila Beauty one day looking for a Korean dupe for the Kerastase Elixir Ultime, and quickly came across La'dor's hero product, their perfumed hair oil. Is it a dupe for Kerastase Elixir Ultime? No, not exactly. But it is a bloody lovely replacement product to pick up when your bottle of Elixir Ultime runs out.

Browsing Lila Beauty's La'dor product section is how I discovered the Herbalism line of products. I say 'line' but that may be a bit strong as there are only two products in this line, a shampoo and a hair treatment. For the sake of trying to stick to my one brand at a time philosophy at this stage, I chose to pair it with the La'dor Volumising Curl Cream.

I am someone who has spent a truly terrifying amount of money on beauty products over the last decade. Thankfully, the search has been worth it. I turn 40 at the end of the year, and I am really happy with how I am ageing. But it wasn't always that way, and when I first started my skin care journey at the age of 27, one of the first places I landed was Lush. The marketing message was so appealing. Hand made by real people. Natural ingredients. Naked packaging, reusable tins or packaging you could recycle. It's perfect, right? Well, no. It wasn't. I remember Lush Herbalism was one of the first cleansers I tried to help with my acne. Did it help? I mean, it sort of cleaned my face. But it was messy, and ultimately did very little to relieve my acne. It was not long after this that I discovered Paula's Choice and the rest is beauty history.

So when I saw La'dor had a line called Herbalism for damaged curls and people with sensitive scalps, I was excited but skeptical. Could this be the green, hippy, herbal perfection my soul has been searching for?

When it comes to the Herbalism hair treatment, my hair just DRINKS this stuff up. I have to be careful not to over apply, and restrict myself to a 20 cent coin sized amount of product. I apply it to my mid-lengths and ends and let it sit for 5-10 minutes, depending on how much time I have. I use it as a 2-in-1 treatment & conditioner as it is quite thick and creamy. Wave clumps form effortlessly with this product. It also smells just like Radox Mineral Herbal Bath Salts, which is the kind of fragrance I truly adore.

If I'm being real, I am on the fence about the La'dor Volumising Curl Cream. Especially with mineral oil being the base ingredient. I don't hate mineral oil, I just want something a bit less basic for my hair. This cream is also double C THICC. I use the tiniest amount, from the top joint crease in my finger to my finger tip only. It gives good results, but I do have to be super careful not to over apply and that does turn me off using it more often.

This morning I washed my hair with my EVO Gluttony Volume Shampoo for no other reason than it was in my shower and I am trying to finish it up (great product for fine hair BTW, highly recommend and may repurchase) and followed with La'dor Herbalism as my second shampoo. I rinsed, and applied a 20 cent coin sized amount of the Herbalism treatment to my mid-lengths and ends. I got out of the shower in my towel (it was fucking freezing, my commitment to this experiment should be studied) and left it in for around ten minutes. It was going to be five minutes, but I ended up doomscrolling on TikTok for a while and left it in longer. I rinsed it out, and got out of the shower. My hair felt lovely and silky in the way it does prior to a Good Hair Day. But when it came time to apply the La'dor Volumising Curl Cream, I hesitated. I didn't really feel like putting it on my hair. I knew there was nothing wrong with mineral oil, but I ended up reaching for the Cake Curl Cream instead. I squeezed a thin line of the cream from the top crease of my index finger to the finger tip. I then warmed it up between my palms and raked it through my mid-lengths and ends before brushing it through with my UnBrush and micro-plopping as usual. God it smells amazing. Anyway.

I noticed immediately that my curl/wave pattern was not as defined or as voluminous as the day I tested Umberto Giannini Dreamy Waves products. I kind of expected that, given the Herbalism treatment and Cake curl cream combination is going to be heavier than the Dreamy Waves products.

After my hair was fully dried ... well, I'm not gonna lie. I loved it. This is what I would call weekend brunch hair. It's fast, minimal effort, one product air dry hair where you want to look cute, but you're not invested in the look lasting more than a day. I have a feeling this will brush out really nicely tomorrow as there is pretty much no hold but enough hydration and shine to give great day 2 waves.

Round 3 Cage Match Results: The Cake Curl Cream and Herbalism hair treatment live to fight another day! I feel the Herbalism shampoo will need another use to determine if it's going to stay or not. It may be ideal for days when my scalp is more sensitive, but only ongoing testing will determine the truth. The La'dor Volumising Curl Cream is now on the chopping block and facing elimination, but I feel I owe it one more test before eliminating it entirely.

You're a Dream to Me: Round 2 of the Hair Care Cage Match Reviews Series

Sit down, pour yourself a beverage. Put 'Dreams' by the Cranberries on. Queue up 'Love Story: JFK Jnr & Carolyn Bessette' on the TV. Seriously, Paul Anthony Kelly as JFK Jnr will make you reconsider your stance on beautiful dumb dumb Canadian himbo former models turned actors forever. All that said ... It's time for the second round of Hair Care Cage Match Reviews!

Today's cage match combatants are the heavyweight champions & veterans of their class. I've had my eye on these products since they launched in the UK, and my patience was rewarded when they recently came to Priceline with a half price introductory offer. I am of course referring to the Umberto Giannini Dreamy Waves line. More specifically, I picked up the shampoo, conditioner, air dry cream, wave glaze shine serum, anti-frizz setting spray & mousse.

Umberto Giannini products have an absolute chokehold on the curly & wavy haired gals on TikTok. It's impossible to escape recommendations for this brand on my FYP. Sponsored or not sponsored, it doesn't seem to matter. The curly and wavy haired community are cray cray for this brand and I really wanted to know ... why? As I have found out the hard way, most products formulated for curly hair really don't work for my fine, wavy hair. I have an oily scalp and struggle with volume as it is, and don't want to live my hair care life in fear of using a smidge too much product and being left with stringy, greasy hair that looks like a pigeon shat in it from a very great height.

So when I saw that Umberto Giannini was launching a line for wavy hair ... Well, I had to have it. I almost placed an order from their UK website to get my hands on it sooner. And I would have followed through too, except their website doesn't ship to Australia. When a friend went to the UK on holiday recently, I came very close to asking her to try and smuggle a few things back home in her luggage for me. Lucky I didn't, because half price at Priceline with Click & Collect thrown in really was the most fiscally friendly option for me in the end.

Part of me wanted to go into this with a skeptical eye. Surely something this popular can't be *that* good, right? Right? WRONG. The girlies on TikTok KNOW THINGS. They know things that I did not know until now.

From the moment I first tried the shampoo and conditioner in the shower, I knew something was different. Like an 'ooohhh' of hair care epiphany. Sort of like going on a date from Bumble and the guy treated you with respect - he made the reservation, turned up on time, pulled out your chair and said 'I got this' when the bill arrived. Flawless game from start to finish. 10/10 no notes. Such was my experience with the Umberto Giannini Dreamy Waves shampoo and conditioner. As someone who has been happy with their hair's general health for a while now and has tried a lot of products, I tend to know a good product on the first try. The Dreamy Waves shampoo & conditioner left my hair feeling so silky and delicious, even when it was still wet. I associate that kind of feeling after rinsing with a good hair day. The only application or technique notes for this part of my routine is that I left the conditioner in for five minutes before rinsing.

And I was not disappointed. The first time I used the Dreamy Waves line, I took a ten cent piece amount of the Air Dry Cream and brushed it through my hair with my UnBrush as usual. Micro-plopped with my Kmart microfibre hair towel to remove excess water. Allowed my hair to air dry (because ya'know, it's an air dry cream right?) ...

Guys. GUYS ... My hair was just sort of - luscious? Soft. Shiny. A somewhat looser but still polished and defined wave pattern. It gave me what I can only refer to as movie star hair. Like when you see a celebrity getting out of a car on the red carpet, or tossing their hair over their shoulder on a talk show. This is the sort of hair I am trying to achieve every day, but I don't always get there every time with every product I try. It was like the hair that you get promised from every product you try, but the results rarely get delivered. Until now.

It was those first use results that compelled me to try these products for a second time today. I have lunch in the city with a girlfriend and drinks in the evening with another girlfriend, so what better way to stress test these products to see if I can strike gold twice? Today, I shampooed first with my L'Oreal Metal Detox Shampoo, and followed with the Dreamy Waves shampoo for my second cleanse, making sure I raked and massaged it through my mid-lengths and ends as well as my scalp. I rinsed, and applied a 20 cent sized dollop of the Dreamy Waves conditioner through my mid-lengths and ends, leaving it on for five minutes before rinsing. Because my hair is looking a just a little fluffy today, I applied two (v tiny) pumps of the glazed waves serum through my mid lengths & ends first, followed with a five cent piece sized dollop of Air Dry Cream. I finished off with a couple of spritzes of the anti-frizz setting spray. This was the only snaffle in my morning. I didn't read the back of the bottle first, and micro-plopped before using the spray. Thankfully my hair was still damp enough that I raked the spray through my hair with the UnBrush and gently scrunched again with my hands before allowing my hair to air dry. Next time, I will spray the liquid from the anti-frizz spray into my hand first and rake it through with my fingers and then the UnBrush before scrunching. I hate spray bottles for application, unless it's a water bottle to wet down my hair. I feel like it gets on your face, the walls, the carpet and your clothes more than your hair. Even placing my hand behind the section of hair I'm working on feels messy and uneven with most spray bottles that aren't a continuous misting style delivery system.

When I get home, I will try gently scrunching some of the Reviving Spray through my waves before heading out for dinner/drinks in the evening.

Post-lunch/ferry trip update: It was like being inside a literal fucking wind tunnel outside in Sydney today. By the time I left the apartment to meet my friend, my hair wasn't fully air dried yet. It was VERY tousled and thoroughly air dried by the time I got off the ferry, however. And yet - my wave shape held. There was a little bit of frizz from all the frenetic wind action, but not enough to bother me. I was shocked. I had the hair of a much younger, insufferably confident art student version of myself heading off for her GAP year in Paris. Soft, shiny, bohemian waves. My drinks date for tonight cancelled with promises to reschedule. So while I didn't strictly NEED to to try the Reviving Spray, I decided to anyway, just for fun. And I'm glad I did. At first I sprayed it into my hands, spread it between my palms and very gently scrunched it into my waves from the bottom up. That helped a little, but not a lot. So I gave in and spritzed it all over my head and gently scrunched again. And ... damn. More definition. More shine. Less frizz. Yes, my palms were bit sticky but for these results who cares?!

Round 2 Cage Match Results: It's a HELL YEAH to the Umberto Giannini Dreamy Waves Shampoo, Conditioner & Air Dry Cream. It's a stay of execution for the Anti-Frizz Spray, but the tribe has spoken for the Wave Glaze Shine Serum - it's OUT of the air dry category. Look for a possible comeback in the heat styling rounds. It's also a yes to the Umberto Giannini Curl Jelly Refresh Curl Reviving Spray - it lives to fight another day!

Happy Friday everyone!

I'll have my Cake and eat it too, thanks: Round 1 of the Hair Care Cage Match Review Series

Hi all. It's your girl. I'm back from another hiatus for more hair care shenanigans. First - a life update. I was made redundant from my Big Girl job around a month ago now. As much as I had become miserable, it was a shock and to be let go in this employment market has me *stressed*. Don't cry for me, however - I was with the company for over a decade so the payout was noice. So noice, in fact, I indulged in my favourite hobby for what may be the last time for many months to come.

You guessed it - I went hog wild at Priceline's massive half price hair care sale. For those unfamiliar with my hair lore, please refer to this post. For the tl/dr crowd, I have had straight, fine hair for most of my life until I went on a mission to test Abbey Yung's product recommendations and techniques from TikTok 18 months ago ... you can find part 1 and part 2 of my experiences here on Reddit. A consistent hair care routine plus age left me with 2A/2B waves. FWIW, I also get my hair professionally coloured every six weeks from mousey brown to copper red.

My hair care outlook is so wildly different to when I first started down this road 18 months ago. Starting felt overwhelming. Intimidating. Expensive. But like all freshly dumped ladies, I was on a mission to become hotter and humble my ex at some future unspecified date to be determined by only the pettiest gods. I already felt like I had my skin care under control (prescription retinoid peeps where you at?) and make up was also something I felt confident about when it came to my collection and skills. So hair care was my chosen path to a glow up.

Fast forward to now. My collection of hair care products that I have no chance of finishing is obscene. I'm having to declutter a lot of it because most of it was for my straight hair era. Don't get me wrong - I still style my hair straight sometimes. God knows the straights need more representation /s. But a lot of my interest now is catering to my new fine waves and trying to work out what brands, products and techniques work for me (including figuring out how to wear it straight!).

With nothing but time and a huge number of products to try, I've decided to post hair care product reviews Cage Match style. Each product will get it's own review with notes on application technique & results included, along with an analysis at the end as to whether it will make it through to the next round of testing. I am aiming to post as regularly as possible to test as many products as possible before I re-enter the work force. Ideally I will post every day, but considering I actually need to get out of the apartment (BOOOOO) and network/apply for jobs, that might not be possible.

Before I go any further, I have to shout out Sasha Chanelle on TikTok. She's an Aussie influencer and she does a lot of content for fine wavy hair types with super accessible product recommendations from Coles, Woolworths, Priceline and Chemist Warehouse. Many of the products I'm about to try came from her recommendations on my FYP. My standard disclaimer also stands. Brands don't know I exist. This post is not sponsored. I spent my own fool money on all of this shit.

Today's contestant in the Hair Care Cage Match is the brand Cake. My morning routine was fairly uneventful - first shampoo was with the OGX ProPeptide + Growth Shampoo. I don't expect a shampoo to help grow my hair. That is what leave-on scalp serums, daily scalp massage, micro-needling, retinoids & minoxidil are for. However, I am intrigued by the 1.5% mandelic acid in this formula as I have an oily scalp. Typically I use a pre-shampoo, leave-on scalp treatment to exfoliate, but when I saw this shampoo half price at Coles I thought it was worth a shot. I massaged it through my mid-lengths and ends (gasp! Abbey Yung method me could never) to remove any styling product left from the day before. The shampoo is thick and left my scalp feeling nice and clean, although it's not as cleansing as my beloved Aveeno Apple Cider Vinegar shampoo.

Right - on to this post's namesake. Cake. I didn't need Sasha to sell this to me on TikTok, but she did. The promise of achieving vanilla birthday cake nirvana beckoned. It was a no brainer when Priceline were offering the whole range at half price as an introductory offer. I snapped up the Curl Friend Shampoo & Conditioner, Curl Cream, Styling Jelly, Foam to Gel, Whipped Mousse and Blow Out Spray. Today, I tested the shampoo, conditioner and curl cream because I wanted it to be a one product day and I am apparently determined to break my own heart in an effort to find the right curl cream for my fine hair.

I followed the OGX shampoo with the Cake Shampoo and Y'ALL. This smelled like a vanilla glitter lip smacker straight out of my school bag in the late 90's. Sheer delight was had - but be warned, you don't need much. I used a ten cent piece sized amount and it was still too much for my fine, shoulder length hair. A crazy foam party was had in the shower, but given how pricey this is I don't want to overuse it. Less is more with this one. I rinsed, applied the conditioner to my mid-lengths and ends and let it sit for five minutes. I rinsed, finished my shower, and applied a small amount of curl cream. The curl cream smells like a splice - tangy, sweet, creamy and horribly tempting considering I am back to calorie counting. The smell took me right back to summers spent at the local public pool, swimming with my sisters and eating ice cream in pre-tween bliss. I used a ten cent piece sized amount thinking surely, that's fine? But once I started distributing it through my hair, I realised I may have Fucked Up and used too much product. This is always the way for me with curl creams, but I never bloody learn apparently.

I brushed the curl cream through my hair with my UnBrush (which I love as a wet hair brush to help distribute product evenly) and micro-plopped sections of my hair in my trusty Kmart microfibre towel to remove excess water from my hair. My hair formed wave clumps really beautifully with the Cake curl cream. The smell lingers slightly after application, but it isn't obnoxious or overwhelming. I did not section my hair - I respect other people do that but I'm not leaving the apartment and don't see the point. I'm perfectly happy to lump about the place looking like Cousin It while I watch my waves dry in front of my face.

Once my hair dried my waves were soft and shiny with just enough definition to make the tiny bit of effort I made feel worthwhile. When my hair was mostly dried, I whipped my head up and down like I'm the world's biggest thrash metal fan. I've found this helps me achieve a more natural look. I no longer need to run a brush through my waves or use my fingers to break up the wave clumps with the thrash method. Once dry, my hair looked lovely - soft and shiny with some decent shape and definition. However, I did feel the shape was lost or the waves were collapsing fast. The most likely culprit is me using too much product, but it's also possible the Cake curl cream is just too heavy to use regularly on my fine hair. My mid-lengths also looked a little dry and fluffier than usual, but that may be down to me double shampooing two days back to back without layering thinner/lighter texture leave-in products the way I normally do. It could also be using the OGX shampoo along my mid-lengths and ends.

I gave in to temptation and shoved my hair up in a bun half way through the day. The waves on one side ended up looking scraggly, and the other side lost definition & got crushed while I was snuggled up on the couch binge watching 'The Americans' on SBS On Demand. I eventually bothered to read the packaging for the Cake conditioner & curl cream. They are supposed to smell like lemon cookies and lemon meringue respectively. No wonder I was one poor financial decision away from Uber Eats-ing a lemon dessert to my door. Lemon desserts are my favourite. I did not give in though - I'm officially on both a financial and calorie budget (sigh).

Round 1 Cage Match Results: Cake Curl Friend Shampoo and Conditioner will proceed to the next round. The Curl Cream will be given a stay of execution, but is on the chopping block and faces potential elimination in the next round.

Transparent housing for the Ink?

Hi all - so I caved. I have the Ink. I backed the Fold too over on Kickstarter. And part of that process awakened a desire for a transparent coloured housing for my Ink. There is an interest check for this on the website (which you can find here). But I just wanted to check in and see if there were any plans for transparent Ink housings to go ahead? I realise the priority is probably getting the first batch of Folds shipped, but seeing all the transparent housing options made me want to ask the question anyway. I also read another post about the Fold kit that will be available for Ink owners to convert their Ink to a Fold. Will the Fold kits just be available in basic black, or will other transparent colours also be available? I would also be interested to know if the converting kits will be injection mold or 3D printed. I know I would definitely would be willing to pay for a transparent coloured injection mold housing for my Ink (in either the Fold or original tablet style design). Any help answering these questions are much appreciated!

If you respectfully refuse to buy into the hype of Rhode Beauty, but still wish to resemble a Krispy Kreme Original Glazed, please read on ...

Hello all, I am reporting to you from my lounge room with a very plump, hydrated ... and dare I say it? .. 'Glazed' face today.

Now, if a product promises dewy perfection in a bottle I will be intrigued. I can't help myself. I am what I am. Most of what I am these days is a devotee of my beloved Stratia Rewind Serum. But I'll be the first to admit I do get a little restless and stray in search of glossier pastures from time to time.

When Rhode Beauty first launched, I rolled my eyes. Another celebrity brand to give someone's less famous spouse something to do while they were not on tour. However, the fanatical popularity of the skin glazing milk did pique my interest. I held off however, confident that the demand for this kind of product would see a brand I actually like come out with something just like it. Enter Stage Left, my trusted skin care companion that is Skin1004.

I was placing yet another order on Lila Beauty, and some of my order was products from Skin1004 that I wanted to gift various friends for their birthday. So I added to cart, and realised with just one more item I would receive a deluxe sample. I did what any sane shopper would do and sorted the Skin1004 products by 'newest'. And there is was. The Skin1004 Madagascar Centella Hyalu-Teca Glass Skin Milk. And for literally half the price of the Rhode equivalent. I just received it today, and boy oh boy. It is milky, almost a serum like texture. And glaze it does! My skin is plump, hydrated, noticeably less red and has a luminosity that is rather lovely. I'm very set in my skin care ways, so it takes a lot for a new and/or 'trendy' product to impress me. Run do not walk.

Edit: so I went back to Lila Beauty today and the Glass Skin Milk is sold out! Wild. Also, after two days of use I am applying this after serums but before moisturiser & sunscreen.

I've been typing on what feels like my endgame board for some time now - a Mage Studio x Beserkeys Love 65 in red & white with HMX Firecracker Switches & GMK Fleuriste keycaps.

It's not my forever board long term I don't think (I'm waiting for my chosen configuration of the Neo 75 Cu to come back into stock). But it's pretty bloody close. It brings me a lot of joy to use every day. But then the nostalgia gets to me. I may only be about 2 years into my mechanical keyboard hobby. A novice by many estimates. But every now and again I hear the siren call of nostalgia for the typing experience of my early builds. So much so I attempted to improve on my first build. I upcycled & gifted my actual first build (a Keychron C1) and purchased a C1 Pro to re-create a more polished version of my first build. I had the stabilizers replaced with some new ones from TX, swapped the stock banana switches for Akko Creamy Purple Pros and topped it all off with my favourite nostalgia-evoking PBT keycap set from Keytok called 'Turn 90's'.

And I'm having a bloody good time. There is something I really enjoy from this build that can't necessarily be replicated by a more expensive build. So I have to wonder - am I the only one, or are there others out there who go back in time and unabashedly enjoy older, cheaper builds?

Share you story in the comments, I am curious to know what takes you back to your early days in the hobby and if you still enjoy typing on those boards today :)

▲ 23 r/TheBYOK+1 crossposts

I have to admit, I have had my BYOK for a while. Unfortunately, life got in the way and I was struggling to find the headspace for writing. I dutifully installed the firmware updates as they came out, but did not get a lot of use out of my white BYOK or my lifetime subscription to Studio. Since then, there have been a number of useful reviews of the BYOK posted by the likes of Joe Van Cleave and Michael Jecks on YouTube. As someone who learns by watching other people do things, I found both videos really informative and I recommend watching them if you have not already.

My very first use of connecting my keyboard of choice (the Lofree Flow Lite84 customized with Pulse switches & tarot keycaps for the curious) was seamless. Bluetooth picked it up right away. But for some reason, every time I tried to connect it after that the BYOK failed to recognise it. That was my first hurdle. My Lofree was fully charged and switched on for bluetooth/wireless connectivity every time, but no matter how hard I try no firmware upgrade has made a difference to this situation yet. That's fine though - I'm a cable person at heart (I swear to god I'm the last person on earth using a pair of Bose QC's with a cable BY CHOICE) ... but still. Would be nice to have the option. I used the adapter that came with my BYOK & the cable that came with my Lofree to connect my Lofree to the BYOK. The first time I tried this I would get heaps of these weird question marks, but since the latest firmware upgrade it's been seamless. I simply turn my BYOK on, plug the keyboard in and start writing exactly where I left off.

The Studio sync is also pretty darn amazing. I write it on the BYOK, and log into Studio and there it is in all it's spelling-error riddled glory. I'm using an old project to learn how to use the BYOK and Studio - I highly recommend this approach as it makes everything a bit more experimental and fun rather than serious and frustrating.

Another small boundary to me using my BYOK more was the somewhat jagged and pixelated font options. But of course, Nick was on to that too - and after installing the latest firmware upgrade I decided to pay a little visit to the font library on the BYOK website. I chose Cronyx Serif and went through the extremely simple process of downloading the file from the website to my desktop. I then put the microSD card from my BYOK in my card reader, and copied the file to the 'fonts' folder on the microSD card. I put the microSD card back into my BYOK & selected Cronyx Serif in the font settings on the BYOK. I was away and typing with my new font in minutes. I even reached 1k words really unexpectedly over a couple of days. I wasn't planning on writing. I wasn't trying to get into a routine. But even sitting on the couch with the tv streaming one episode after another, I just kept writing. The words just flowed out. I haven't worked on this old project in over a year, but the work just poured out of me. The story took a direction I hadn't planned for, but when I read it back in Studio I really liked what I had written, spelling and grammar issues notwithstanding. I was shocked to read I had reached 1k words already as it didn't feel like deliberate effort, 'work' or difficult at all.

I'm not unfamiliar with this phenomenon - I own an Astrohaus Freewrite Gen 3 Smart Typewriter. For those who are interested, Nick compared it to the BYOK and a bunch of other distraction free writing devices in this video. But I was still surprised at how easy, seamless and fun this made my writing process. And considering this is a first generation device ... I'm impressed. It does not feel like a first generation device to use. Everything except the bluetooth connectivity for my Lofree is seamless and I can get on with my writing knowing it's all synching up to Studio, ready for me to edit when the time comes. Well done Nick & the BYOK team - you should be really proud of what you have achieved for this small community.

I gifted a BYOK to a friend who is an indie author. She is also loving her BYOK, posting about it on IG to her followers and putting it to work on drafting her next short story for her fanbase. If you are hesitating, or your Kickstarter order has been gathering dust for a while (like mine did) this is your sign to get writing. It's easier than you think, especially with a device like the BYOK that makes your first draft more fun than you might expect.
