First solo tent camping trip - davy crockett national forest, tx

Did this back in march but only just now getting around to posting it! Lovely solo camping trip at an established (but nicely spread out) campground by a lake. I'm so proud of myself! I had done car camping solo once before and this was my first solo tent camping. it was rly cool cause i grew up camping on the west coast, but it is a much less common activity where i live now (in southeast TX)

One small hiccup was I was using a 3 person tent because that's what i already owned, and it really wasn't meant to be set up by 1 person. I struggled for like 20+ minutes, and eventually a dude driving by offered to help, and we got it set up and he was very kind and respectful and then left. I didn't mention i was solo of course. But far more often then not while solo travelling, i have had people, including plenty of men, stick their necks out and look out for me. So it was a nice reminder that not everyone is evil lmao.

Next time i will prob get a solo popup tent.

Helpful things I did to get through the heebie jeebies at night were:

-getting myself really tired from a hike during the day

-nice big delicious meal at night

-during the day i sat still in the forest with my eyes closed for 5 minutes and listened to all the crazy animal sounds and how many things made creaks and cracks

-allowed myself to listen to a podcast in one earbud to help me fall asleep. One day i will graduate to falling asleep with just the sounds of nature lol, but not right now.

DON'T TAKE YOUR GUNS TO TOWN SON

God i fucking love this song. I've been listening to charley for a few years and while i've always loved all his music and lyricism, ive always known he could do more. I've always craved a true storytelling type song/ballad (a la Marty Robbins) from him, with characters and a beginning, middle, and end. And "don't take your guns to town" is it, i absolutely love it, immediately replayed it. I hope we can see more songs like this, perhaps even longer ones someday. I love the drama.

If yall enjoyed this song, it reminded me so strongly of the following songs by Marty Robbins, so you might want to check them out:

El Paso

Faleena (from El Paso)

Big Iron

Mr. Shorty

They're Hanging Me Tonight

edit: found out it's a johnny cash cover, still love it, and i do still feel like the storytelling elements are stronger in this album, such as with image of a woman

Resources for planning my first solo backpacking trip?

Hi all, I am wanting to go on my first solo backpacking trip in September in Southeast Texas. It will be probably only 1 night, a 20 mile total trail with a hike-in campsite in the middle, in a national forest. Any resources for gear I need to bring to make this enjoyable/somewhat comfortable without breaking the bank and buying a ton of stuff? Ive done camping but am new to this level.

Luckily it is mostly flat due to it being SE Texas.

Open chapels in houston?

I know i saw someone ask this recently but couldn't find the post. Are there any chapels/churches that are open daily that one can just stop in for prayer/quiet? Like a lot of Catholic churches in Europe/the east coast. Thanks.

Are there any programs out there for prereqs similar to ASU Universal Learner?

I guess this is not super specific to nursing only, but does anyone know any online accredited universities/programs where you can take prereqs and not pay until you get a good grade, like ASU's Universal Learner program?

I know about CLEP, BYU Independent Study, and Portage. With the latter two you have to pay up front, with CLEP it's not quite the same.

Where did yall take your prereqs?

Just curious. I have been looking around at nursing schools and am liking cizik because it's high ranked, would be no tuition for me, and no time limit on prereqs.

I'm a working adult so am taking prereqs slowly, mostly 1 a semester right now, and I have prereqs that could apply from Lone Star College, high school AP classes, a New Mexican university, and a community college in Oregon.

Are they really okay with prereqs from multiple institutions, possibly spread out over like 10 years by the time I apply?

Also, I saw that Arizona State University has a Universal Learner program where you take a class and only pay if you like the grade you got. BYU has something similar. Has anyone used those types of programs?

How concerned should we be about street parking security in the Heights?

Renting a house in the Heights, only 1 car parking space and we have 2 cars. Parking space is only large enough for my smaller car, so my partner's large truck will need to be parked on the street.

How concerned do we need to be about this in terms of security? The street is definitely very residential, not a main street or anything, but also not super duper tucked away.

It is a large shiny relatively new truck, Ford F250. He is a contractor and has had his truck and his work trailer broken into multiple times over the years, including in very "nice" neighborhoods like River Oaks. So that is where the concern is coming from.

Minimal phone with an on-call job?

I am really looking at the Minimal Phone, as someone who has never had a dumbphone before i think it would be a good intro, and i still want/need to use maps, spotify, some occasional other apps, etc.

However, my huge concern is that i've heard some say the server randomly goes down and they can't make calls. Does anyone have any issues with RECEIVING calls? That is enourmous for me because im a licensed midwife and NEED to be reachable 24/7 if my clients are in labor. I also occasionally need to call 911, or might need to call them back.

I do also have a new flip-phone i could carry as a backup when i am on call, but am just a bit worried about this.

Curious about deposit amounts for renting a house in Houston

Looking at a house rental with 3 bedrooms that is $1950/month that has a $3900 deposit. Is this deposit amount normal/common? I am used to deposits being only 1 month's rent, but I also haven't rented in like 3 years and have never rented a larger house like this. Thanks.

Help me remember this episode of Criminal

Help. What is the name of the episode of Criminal where there's a guy that gets called by some scammy company, then becomes obsessed with them and kind of tracks them down/tries to track how they have his info? And I think an employee of the company reveals he is being trafficked/cannot leave?

Writing an essay about a similar topic that is due today and I want to use this podcast episode as a source.

In person stores please. Kids are 3-6 years old. Adjustable ones would be great so they can grow with them but not a dealbreaker.

I'm going to check thrift stores of course but I feel like this is pretty specific.

I want to really feel and look at them which is why im not purchasing online, and I need them in 2 days. And i generally don't like supporting amazon as a personal preference
