The Buildofy Narration, the Giant Cut-Out, and the AC Bill

So recently I bought a Buildofy subscription. In my free time, I usually explore different residences and download their PDFs. I usually avoid watching the videos because most of them have a very weird narrative.

They can start anywhere, from a bedroom on the third floor to a random cutout in the ceiling. Usually, the architect talks about the play of light, the experience, double height spaces and grand lobbies. Especially the grand lobbies. They’re never actually grand, they’re just weirdly spaced places with weird proportions. And then there’s all this talk about the play of light in a country like India.

The narrative can literally time skip. They could be talking about the entrance and then suddenly jump to any other place in the whole house instead of talking about what actually happens after the entry.

And one other very funny thing I’ve noticed is that most architects try to use the same words to describe their designs: experience, grand, juxtaposition, materials, and so on. But the thing is, it’s not actually happening. They use words like experience, grand and juxtaposition when the materials are literally some of the dullest materials you could possibly see.

And what is it with architects not giving projections over windows? They’ll invest so much time planning double height spaces and grand spaces.

In places like Delhi, what sort of electricity bill are they paying to have these spaces air conditioned? And these aren’t even projects somewhere in the colder parts of India. They’re literally in places that experience sunlight for most of the year.

And yet we’re still designing huge double height spaces and cutouts with barely any projection over the windows.

Indian women, what’s something man has done that made you think, “okay, maybe men aren’t so bad after all”?

I feel like we hear enough stories about the terrible ones, so I want to hear about the ones who restored your faith a little.

Maybe hearing some of your stories will take away a little of my aversion to dating men. 😭

Buildofy review?

I am just on the verge of buying a buildofy subscription.

I plan a lot of plotted houses and want to explore what the other architects are doing.

What has been your experience with buildofy?

Even a small comment is appreciated!

EDIT: SPELLING

Where should a young architect travel to learn?

Hi everyone,

I'm planning a solo trip with a budget of up to ₹1,00,000, and I'm looking for destination suggestions centred around architecture that genuinely inspires.

I'm not looking for iconic landmarks or famous buildings just because they're by a star architect. I'm looking for places where the design is connected to people's lives and has something meaningful to teach. It could be anything from a small project to an entire city, as long as there's something I can learn and bring back into my own work.

I'd love recommendations from architects who are well travelled or have visited places that changed the way they think about design.

Also, if you know of any buildings that are worth visiting from the inside, or have any tips or contacts that could help me get access, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks!

Need to spend a 5k zara gift card!

Need Zara sale recommendations!

I have a ₹5,000 Zara gift card and want to make the most of the current sale. I visited a store recently but left feeling more confused than inspired, so I'm planning to shop online instead.

A bit of context:

I'm a slim, petite woman in my mid-20s.

I live in a tier-3 city and run my own small office.

Most days I wear jeans, trousers, shirts, and basic T-shirts.

I don't usually wear very trendy or revealing clothes, but I'm open to buying one or two trendier pieces for trips to bigger cities.

I can also visit Zara stores in Delhi NCR if there are any must-try items.

If you had ₹5,000 to spend at Zara, what would you buy? Which categories are Zara's strongest (trousers, jeans, shirts, knitwear, jackets, dresses, bags, etc.), and which ones aren't worth the money?

I'd rather buy a few versatile, good-quality pieces that I'll actually wear than end up with a random sale haul.

Safe area to star after a concert

Need advice.

Three female friends are coming to Delhi this weekend for the Jasmine Sandlas concert at Yashobhoomi, Dwarka. It ends around 10 PM, and we're staying for one night.

Budget: ₹3,000.

Priorities:

- Safe area and whether we should book a hotel or Airbnb.

- Good late-night food delivery (Zomato/Swiggy).

Which area would you recommend, and are there any specific hotels or Airbnbs you'd suggest?

Qualifications/certifications for highly experienced construction professionals without degrees?

I’m registering an architecture/construction consultancy in India. One of my associates is only 10th pass but has years of hands-on experience across execution, supervision, labour/vendor handling, measurements, coordination, materials, and overall site management. He basically handles end-to-end on-site work.

We won’t misrepresent him as an Architect or Engineer, but many tenders ask for technically qualified staff/team credentials.

What are the best legitimate certifications, diplomas, or programs that actually add credibility in bidding and firm profiles?

Considering:

  • Construction management/supervision
  • Quantity surveying
  • AutoCAD drafting
  • Safety certifications
  • NSDC / Skill India / CIDC programs

Would appreciate practical advice from architects, contractors, PMC firms, or people handling government/private tenders in India.
