Jason Schreier says he can't confirm the Undead Labs rumor, and that it's "fundamentally wrong" that all 4 studios needing buyers to survive, with some of them going independent being "possible (even likely)"

On ResetEra https://www.resetera.com/threads/gamesbeat-undead-labs-is-one-of-the-xbox-studios-that-may-close-if-no-buyers-are-found.1564195/post-157184182

>I can't speak to the Undead Labs part (I've heard tons of rumors but I'm not going to comment on any specific studio until I am 100% certain it's on the chopping block), but this article is fundamentally wrong about these studios all needing to find buyers to survive. What's possible (even likely) is that some of the studios that are lined up for closure will be spun out and taken independent again by their management, potentially saving some jobs.

Jason Schreier via Bloomberg: several Xbox studios including Compulsion Games, Double Fine and Ninja Theory are in negotations to spin off into independent studios to avoid being shut down

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-06-15/studios-in-microsoft-s-xbox-division-brace-for-closures?accessToken=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJzb3VyY2UiOiJTdWJzY3JpYmVyR2lmdGVkQXJ0aWNsZSIsImlhdCI6MTc4MTU1NDUzNiwiZXhwIjoxNzgyMTU5MzM2LCJhcnRpY2xlSWQiOiJUR09XOTRLSVAzTE0wMCIsImJjb25uZWN0SWQiOiJCMUVBQkI5NjQ2QUM0REZFQTJBRkI4MjI1MzgyQTJFQSJ9.qu5M4E4sve-8r60rL_e-Xv-LrGJvIGgWiKLxMitTl5A&leadSource=uverify%20wall

>Several studios in Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox gaming division, including Montreal-based Compulsion Games and San Francisco-based Double Fine, are in active negotiations to spin off as they try to thwart closure, according to people familiar with the company’s plans.

>Cambridge, England-based Ninja Theory, the maker of Hellblade, is also in conversations with Xbox, as are several other studios across the portfolio that are at risk of being shuttered.

>The studios may still have the opportunity to buy themselves back from Xbox and go independent, although many employees will likely lose their jobs as a result, said the people, who asked not to be named because they were not authorized to speak to the press. Employees at several studios have been informed of the situation and given permission to seek new work but were told that the status of the studios is still in flux.

NateDrake/NateTheHate on Xbox layoffs: says it's gonna be "a bloodbath", says there's been talks about significant layoffs since SGF concluded

>It's going to be a bloodbath -- lots of layoffs are expected across the entire Xbox division.

Also says Double Fine if needed could go back to being an independent studio through a buyout clause (NOT implying this is actually happening, just responding to someone saying they could be at risk)

Cloud9 is making a player pay for part of his buyout by giving up guaranteed prize money, guilt tripping amateur organization into accepting a lower buyout by alleging they're keeping player hostage

Bit of a controversy going on in Call of Duty esports right now with Cloud9. For a few days now there's been a rumor that Cloud9 has been trying to sign Wevy, an 18 year old amateur player on amateur organization Telluride Shrub. Through recordings of the negotiations between the 2 organizations, it has now been revealed that Cloud9 was trying to bring the $10k buyout down to $2k by alleging Telluride Shrub was holding Wevy hostage, with Wevy then also having to compensate part of that buyout by having to give up part of the prize money from an upcoming tournament.

Cloud9 co-founder and CEO Jack Etienne also responded in the linked thread, confirming that Wevy is indeed expected to give up part of his prize earnings to pay back for the buyout.
