The mental healthcare system has done me more harm than good

At 18 I trusted a psychiatrist who misdiagnosed me with bipolar. Spoiler alert, I just had trauma. I was put on and off over 20 medications. I still have tremors from Lithium and that was over a decade ago.

My experience in psych wards honestly deserves its own post. From having the cops called on me and patting me down and handcuffing me like I was a criminal, to the rampant abuse within psych wards and everything that I endured there. I tense up a bit whenever I’m at home and hear sirens now.

When I was 22 I was in an intensive outpatient therapy program. Their program was for ages 13-23 and they didn’t separate us by age. They literally asked me the most personal and intrusive questions about my trauma in front of people I didn’t even know and expected me to talk about it in detail. They asked me about my sex life in front of minors.
Twice a week they had what they called “family nights.” All of the adolescents in the program and their parents or support person would all sit in a circle in a big room and literally shame each other. They would put the parents and adolescents on blast and talk about ALL of the problems that they shared in one on one therapy.

That program was absolutely fucked and apparently it’s still running, but it’s not for anyone 18+ anymore.

This isn’t even all of it but probably the most traumatizing. I’m sorry to everyone on this sub who has experienced abuse at the hands of the mental healthcare field.

What flower would you recommend from holy city farms for anxiety/relaxing at the end of the day?

I’m totally new to hemp flower. I’m very sensitive to thc and really don’t enjoy the head high at all, but it’s really great for my appetite. I want to have mental clarity but feel very relaxed. The strains that I’m looking at are Lemon Lurker, Ice Capades, and Galactic Icee.

What strain would you recommend to increase your appetite?

I’m sorry if this has been asked a lot, I tried searching but nothing recent came up.

I used to smoke everyday for years and it was the only way that I could eat. Eventually I was prescribed a stimulating antidepressant that made me have panic attacks every time I smoked weed, so I had to quit. That was in 2018 and since then I have tried a myriad of medications to increase my appetite and nothing has ever worked long term and also without major side effects.

I recently stopped by a dispensary to pick up some 2mg thc 4mg cbd drinks hoping that maybe I could try it again, and they’ve been amazing for my appetite. For the first time in years I’m genuinely craving food. I love feeling relaxed, I love feeling a body high, but I don’t enjoy having a head high in any way, and these give me a bit of one and I’m not really enjoying that part.

So basically, what would you recommend for someone who doesn’t have an appetite at all but also doesn’t want a head high at all?

edit: I want to add that I’m in California and I know the laws have changed recently, if that will change any recommendations for me.

What are your favorite things about the Midwest?

I’m really missing the Midwest right now. I just visited my family there last week and we went to the fair and Midwest fairs are superior to west coast fairs in every way.

Apparently my sign is an invitation😪

Ugh. I’m like the only person in our neighborhood with a “please be respectful” sign. Everyone here seems to be an entitled dog owner. Not only do my neighbors not have a sign, but there is a park right next to my neighbor’s house. But they still choose my yard. I watched someone on my camera literally let their dog piss directly on my sign. I’ve seen people in this neighborhood let their dogs pee on someone’s Christmas lights that were in their grass!

I cannot wait to get out of this shitty ass tract home community. Unfortunately we’re broke right now so that can’t happen, but not only do I hate the dog owners here, I also hate my douchey nosey ass neighbor (who of course has a barking dog.)

Thanks for reading my rant lol.

Will the feeling of desperately wanting a mom ever go away?

I turned 31 this year and every day just wish that I had a loving and supportive mom instead of the joke that I’ve been stuck with my whole life.

I’m constantly wishing that I had someone that i could talk to about my bad days and cry and actually be comforted. I wish that I had someone who had my back.

Has this gotten better for anyone? The older you got maybe the less painful it has gotten?

edit: thank you everyone for all of your comments and advice❤️ I would like to add that I have accepted that my mom will never be my mother and is incapable of being emotionally available. I no longer try to receive any support from her. But I still continue to wish for someone else to be a mother to me, if that makes sense.

Will living in a cold climate make things worse?

I really hope that it’s okay to post here, the cardiomyopathy subreddit is very inactive.

My husband was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy last week through an echo. His EF is 40-45%. The results were posted on his Kaiser app, not a single doctor has called him to discuss the results He’s seeing a cardiologist next Monday. But for now we just have Google which I know isn’t great.

We’ve been planning to move to Michigan for a long time, and we’re going to in the next few years. But from what I’ve looked up (which I know is not completely reliable) it seems like a cold climate may not be best for his heart? Has this been true for you all?

Again I’m very sorry if this is not the right place to post this.

Your experience taking the mini pill for a hormonal imbalance?

I had a pretty severe eating disorder for a long time and even though I’ve gained weight and am in recovery, I still have a pretty severe hormonal imbalance. An endocrinologist recommended birth control until my hormones become more regulated because of the brain fog and near debilitating fatigue that I have.

I won’t take the combo pill because I’m really stable on Lamictal and I don’t want to risk that changing, so the mini pill is my only option.

If you took/are taking the mini pill for similar reasons, was it helpful?

I’ll never understand why people think psych wards will help

Psych wards are rampant with abuse, they can and will force drugs and ECT on you, and they can and will tie you down. They treat you less than human.

I have had my clothes taken from me and forced to wear paper scrubs. They refused to give me a blanket while I shivered. I was forced to wear something called a turtle suit even though I showed absolutely zero signs of aggression. They wouldn’t give me plastic silverware so I had to eat with my hands, which would’ve been fine if they had given me finger foods but they didn’t. I was prescribed antipsychotics while showing zero signs of psychosis. And sure, I could’ve refused, but the would’ve just forced it on me anyway and that just would’ve made me stay there even longer.

The staff is allowed to yell at you and be verbally abusive towards you and nothing happens to them. But if you’re too happy or too sad, they medicate you. If you try and stand up for yourself, they medicate you and keep you there even longer.

I’ll never understand why people think that this benefits you when you already want to die. Especially because getting sent to a psych ward could cause you to lose your job which means you’ll lose your home. People have pets that they need cared for as well. But nobody thinks about this part. Everyone has just been brainwashed into thinking that they need to call the cops on you.

Have you taken N-Acetylcysteine and has it helped?

This supplement was recommended to me 6 years ago for my OCD. I’ve honestly just been lazy and that’s why I haven’t taken it. Reading through this sub I’ve seen that a few people have tried it and it seems to have helped with their fatigue, but I’ve only seen about 2 or 3 people mention it.

Have you taken NAC and has it helped with your fatigue?

Did low dose naltrexone help give you some of your life back?

I have read through a ton of posts on here talking about low dose naltrexone but I’d love to hear from more people who it has helped.

I’m still not sure what is causing my chronic fatigue. It wasn’t sudden, it has been slowly getting worse and worse. I thought that it was being caused by my eating disorder, but now that I’m in recovery I’m still fatigued, and my blood work is perfect. I’m speaking to my doctor next week about ANAs and having that done.

I want to be able to work full time from home once I finish school but I genuinely don’t even know how I would do it. If I don’t get 12 hours of sleep my brain fog is worse than usual, I’m nauseous, and I have hot and cold flashes. I’m also still exhausted after getting that much sleep. I just want my life back and if it has helped you, could you share your success story with me?

I didn’t realize how much I’d miss the Midwest

I was born and raised in NWI and lived there for 27 years. While Indiana wasn’t for me, I think the Midwest is. I miss the seasons and the laid back lifestyle. I miss Culver’s and White Castle. I miss the beaches in Michigan so much.

I miss the crap out of the fair. I miss fried veggies, elephant ears, corn on the cob dipped in a giant tub of melted butter. Free admission before noon and free parking. Midwest fairs are absolutely unmatched.

I miss the green.

I hope I don’t sound ungrateful in this post. I’m so grateful I’ve gotten the opportunity to live in Southern California. I met my husband and I’ve enjoyed experiencing a different part of the US. I definitely needed to leave Indiana for my mental health and wouldn’t be where I am today if I hadn’t. But I can’t wait to move to Michigan. I’m ready to have a slower pace of life back, be closer to my friends, and spend the summer at the lake.

Calcium and immunoglobulin A are right on the cusp

Technically all of my bloodwork is within the normal range, however my calcium is 10.1 and my immunoglobulin A is 71. They are right on the cusp.

All of my other bloodwork is completely normal. I did an at home sleep study and it came back negative for sleep apnea.

Are there any other tests that you’d recommend that I ask for based on my calcium being almost too high and my immunoglobulin A being almost too low? I’ve gotten all of the basic blood work done. Thyroid, electrolytes, etc.

I’m so exhausted every single day. I just want to be able to work again and live my life.
