Nancy's DNA results are in!

It's been a month now since I started fostering Nancy through Helpless Hounds and she's recovered enough from her initial medical drama to get comfortable and start to be very naughty- which I'm so grateful for! Heartworm treatment is brutal and I'm not looking forward to her feeling sick again after her injections, but she's fully transformed into a loony coony now that she's put on weight and had a month of meds!

I'm surprised by her results! I was 100% convinced there was some sighthound in there! I know DNA results only go back three generations and they don't account for bad breeding, but I never expected 100% Walker.

If anyone has experience with keeping a very active coonhound calm during heartworm treatment I'd love to hear it. I'm scared!

Thunder got his DNA results!

Thunder is an adoptable dog with Helpless Hounds rescue and someone donated a DNA test to help get him adopted!

We figured he was a beagle mix but could not possibly have guessed the rest of this. The tiny percentages are always wild with Wisdom Panel's results but l've never seen sooooo many in such small numbers before.

Hound breed guesses wanted!

I sent off her DNA test and won't have results for a couple weeks, but I'm dying for opinions from people who know hounds!

Info to help make a guess:

- estimated to be 4 years old

- 28 lbs, but underweight

- long snout, minimal stop

- almond shaped, almost slanted eyes

- Much smaller than she looks in pictures

- Mostly legs

- Located in Oklahoma

- Heartworm positive and recovering from her spay so she's not feeling well, and I don't have a lot to share about her personality just yet, but she likes to do little air chomps when she's playing

Also if you have a similar hound, I'd love to see!

Uzi's test was sent in this morning

I pulled this girl from the shelter last week. She's heartworm positive, had to have an emergency spay, plus kennel cough, among other things. She's a million dollar baby and I'm obsessed with her.

When I first saw the shelter pictures, I assumed she was a young Walker mix, but now that she's here, it turns out she's closer to 4 years old and I'm leaning more toward foxhound/sighthound? Whippet?

I won't have her results back for a couple weeks and I'd love to know other people's thoughts and see similar dogs in the meantime.

We've been having fun trying to guess what he's mixed with, but he's gotta be predominantly hound with those ears and his behavior- specifically the singing and the standing on tables.

Helpless Hounds picked up the last Bluetick Coonhound puppy from an "oops litter" a couple days ago. We had an amazing pre-approved adopter for her and assumed it would be a pretty straightforward adoption, but the minute we saw her it was clear she needed emergency help.

The first 12 hours of her parvo treatment cost $1,700. She's stable now and transferred to a regular vet for continued care, it's just so expensive

We've been getting hit with back to back surprise medical bills lately:

-two heartworm positive dogs (and 4 more on our wait list)

-a hospice case we couldn't say no to

-two recent mass removals (we were able to cover one full surgery through a Facebook fundraiser!)

-one puppy has upcoming surgery to fix her deformed third eyelid (sorry, I can't remember what it's called, but it's not cherry eye- it's bigger and weirder)

-two injuries needing stitches, including another midnight ER run

-one who that fully lost a toenail on Thursday (not quite the same type of expensive medical emergency but COME ON)

It’s been a lot. If y'all can help with Shayla's medical treatment we would really appreciate it. I can pay you back in gross surgery/eye/missing toenail pictures.

If you prefer to donate to the vet directly, they'll be open Monday: Catoosa Small Animal Hospital (918) 266-4090

(Please ignore the typo on her receipt- her name is Shayla)

Almost everyone at the rescue agreed that he had to be mixed with something, but border collie wasn't even in my top ten guesses.
