Y'all, I'm thinking about doing some overkill upgrades to my Shapeoko 5 Pro

I have a Shapeoko 5 Pro 4x4 (which I upgraded to from a Pro XL a few years ago). It has a 65mm spindle and vfd from Carbide3d. I absolutely love the machine and I'm about to convert it over to do aluminum work. I have a Saunders plate, some mod vises, soft jaws, yada yada.

I have seriously been thinking of how much I would like an ATC for this machine and the ability to do a 4th axis rotary. The PwnCNC kit looks fantastic but on the stock controller it only offers MTC abilities which is barely useful (still a good kit but doesn't really solve much).

To do an ATC I'd probably need to upgrade to a Masso G3 or something and again PwnCNC has a great very complete kit for it at $3k. I'd need a probe and a bit setter but those aren't terribly priced. For another $3200 I'd get an ATC, a 2.2 kW 80mm spindle, and water cooled with a chiller that would work with the Masso.

So let's say all in I'm ~$6500 in upgrades to a $5k machine that even with the 30mm riser blocks has a fairly limited amount of Z.

Since this is at my house I only have single phase power and I have enough room for the aforementioned SO5.

There are very few single phase powered VMCs out there even used. A Haas mini-mill is around $20k on the used market. Not many used Syils out there. The Tormach is interesting but reviews are mixed. The Langmuir MR1 is pretty decent (I have one of their big plasma tables) but lacks 4th axis or ATC but looks pretty rigid.

The question that will invariably be asked is 'what are you trying to make on it?'. I have made a metric shit load of wood signs on it and I absolutely love both the machine and the support for that. I have some prototype parts I'm making for my car out of 6061 and I suspect that some of them might actually sell but not enough to justify trying to get a big machine.

So would you do the upgrades to the machine and if I run out of capacity just farm it out? Save the money and try and get a mini mill at my shop (I'd still have the Shapeoko at my house at that point)? Just looking for some 'sane' thoughts.

Where are you getting your sunglasses?

I'm not one for 'fashion' (despite what the flair it made me pick) generally but I'm usually in my normal outfit of cargo shorts and mechanics shirts and either my pomp or a hat. I have owned half a dozen pairs of Crown Deluxe sunglasses over the years and I love the way they look but they are out of business. Since I bought my last pair I've been wearing prescription glasses so I'd like to get some big fat arm sunglasses with good lenses like the Deluxe used to do.

So for those who wear bigger armed sunglasses where are you getting them these days?

Help me pick out some wheels for my '17 Z06 in Watkins Glenn Gray Metallic

So I'm one of those who has a micro cracked wheel that keeps leaking down and I want to buy a new set of wheels. Car is ridiculously optioned and has the carbon ceramic brakes and just about every feature you could get on one in '17 other than the Z07 skirts.

I've looked at a ton of pictures of different wheels and I'm thinking I like the Apex VS-5RS in anthracite.

I also like the way the ZR1 wheels look so was thinking the Factory Reproduction variants of them (which are notably cheaper than the Apex) and I'm sure they don't have the same cracking problem as OEM. I'm not sure the quality and reputation though so any insight would be good.

I love love love the way the Strasse SP5Rs look but holy shit I don't want to spend carbon money on wheels.

I have always liked the way a split 5 spoke looks and really shows off the massive brakes.

Anybody with a similar color car put aftermarket wheels on theirs that they like? Mind sharing a picture and your experience with those wheels?

Sir Pterry tribute in Good Omens (doesn't spoil anything)

(yes I acknowledge not specifically Discworld but it is about the man himself)

We were watching the last episode of Good Omens last night and this painting was in a scene. I legit got a little choked up and now must commit to finding a print of that painting for my office. It was a very sweet homage to Pterry and it was appreciated.

(That pic is ancient, truck is much cleaner now. Also I acknowledge the phrase 'big stereo' is subjective.)

Was at an event with a bunch of coworkers last weekend and we had a mix of employees and college aged interns there. Earlier in the week one of my peers of a similar age (I'm 48, he's 46) and I were talking about the stereo in my truck after I said I couldn't take any passengers in the rear seats of my truck because of the sub. He said 'of course you have a sub in your truck' and he was into stereos 'back in the day' so when we were loading up to leave he wanted a demo of what I had. We were in a parking deck outside of a big festival that was loud as shit so I didn't feel like 'that guy' being loud when you already couldn't hear each other without almost yelling.

I rolled down the windows, loaded up a song that absolutely hammers in my truck (Kill Jill by Big Boi feat Killer Mike and Jeezy), and gave it the beans.

I'm pretty sure that this was the first time most of them had ever heard a car stereo that was louder than stock judging by their reactions of just pure joy of entertainment. People started dancing and sticking their heads in the windows giggling with the violence that it was giving. They were daring each other to put their heads in next to the port to feel the air flow etc. It was absolutely remarkable and fun seeing them all have such a good time. As the token 'old guy' relative to people literally half my age it was nice to see the respect they had for the excess.

It's also not just loud (it does 142 db all day measured in the passenger floor) but it actually sounds really good.

Setup:

  • Stock F150 Sync 3 head unit
  • XSPower D2700 battery and all the appropriately sized cables
  • Custom wiring harness to intercept speaker signals
  • Dayton DSP
  • JL XD600/6v2 amp
  • Morel Tempo Ultra 602 MKIIs in the doors and pillars
  • Sundown Xv3 12" in a box I built tuned to 32 hz
  • D4S JP23 wired to half ohm
  • Probably 20#+ of sound deadening mat on the walls, doors, and floors

I spent about 2 hours with a measurement mic and REW tuning on it when I built it so it would sound good for daily use.
