Nothing like face time to reinforce your standing amongst your allies
I toyed with the idea of adding a binky, but that felt a little heavy handing.
Pimburaththawa Tank Spillway, Sri Lanka- 7°43'58.95"N 81°12'04.18"E
Pimburaththawa Tank Spillway, Sri Lanka - 7°43'58.95"N 81°12'04.18"E
This reservoir dates back to at least as far as the 12th century, when King Parakramabahu declared, "not a single drop of rain should flow into the ocean without first serving mankind." The modern hydro works were introduced sometime in the 1980s.
The spillway is open for recreation, however being situated along the border of Maduru Oya National Park, visitors are sternly warned to clear out before dusk to avoid encounters with wild elephants.
Aside from the potential elephant trampling, I also enjoyed trying to wrap my western brain around the double "th" in the middle of a word. Followed by an "awa"? Yea, I'm in over my head on this one.
Liyutan Reservoir's Weir Spillway, Taiwan - 24°20'29.22"N 120°46'54.71"E
Unlike Pimburaththawa, this entire system began construction in 1985, and was completed in 1992, replacing a network of smaller, haphazard, often hand dug, century-old irrigation systems. However, it's name translates to "Carp Lake", paying homage to a spiritual "carp deity" in honor of the local valley's ecological and cultural heritage.
I was unable to determine if this spillway was open for recreation, but looking at that massive drop on the runoff side, if it ever was, it probably wasn't for long. The water is also praised for it's purity, so I imagine that's another reason to keep the public on the demand side of the system.
Noteworthy: I assumed the purpose of these zig-zag patterns were for reinforcement purposes, however, after looking in to it I learned it's method is less about resisting water pressure through brute strength, and instead, decreasing pressure by increasing surface area, allowing for greater water flow.
Nikumaroro (Gardner) Island - 4°40'40.50"S 174°31'10.55"W
The South Pacific atolls are some of my favorite finds in Google Earth. So, while listening to one of the mystery channels on youtube cover the potentially found remains of Emilia Earhart, I decided to check it out. The more I looked in to it, the more I started to think this would make an interesting post.
Pic 2: The SS Norwich City Wreck - 4°39'36.52"S 174°32'42.36"W
It's believed that after failing to reach Howland Island to refuel, due to signal issues, Earhart ran out of fuel and successfully landed on Nikumaroro's coral reef, near the rusted remains of the SS Norwich City, a freighter that ran aground in 1929, approximately 640KM Southeast of her planned destination.
Pic 3: Tatiman Passage
It's believed rough weather conditions and the tide eventually tore her 1936 Lockheed 10E Electra apart, sending the lightweight aluminum fuselage and wings floating through this passage into the inner lagoon.
Pic 4: The Taraia Object - 4°40'06.09"S 174°31'42.38"W
While not visible through google earth, there's an anomaly buried in the sand here, said to match the size and shape of the fuselage and wings. This has yet to be confirmed.
Pic 5: Seven Site (Castaway Camp) - 4°41'10.36"S 174°29'46.51"W
A partial skeleton believed to be either Earhart or her navigator, Fred Noonan, was found here, along with a heel from a woman's shoe estimated to be from the 1930's, an empty case believed to hold a sextant, and glass shards from a bottle of Dr. C.H. Berry's Freckle Ointment from the US, which Earhart was known to use to conceal the freckles she was extremely self-conscious of. Apparently, it's believed the skeleton was dismantled by coconut crabs.
The wreck of the Norwich was an interesting rabbit hole in itself. Definitely worth the read. Notably, the 24 survivors of the 35 man crew onboard found uninhabited huts left behind by the Arundel Coconut Plantation in 1892, which took me down a whole nother rabbit hole. For the sake of brevity, I decided to keep the focus on Emilia.
Was looking for a bag but this one doesn't look very spacious
An ancient monogenetic volcanic cinder cone crater with a very peculiar surrounding landscape - 36°41'14.55"N 113°10'30.61"W
Found while snooping around NW Arizona, with the only thing nearby being the "Bobcat Reservoir", a remote BLM managed wildlife watering hole, approximately 3km away.
From what I've read so far, pic 1 appears to be Diamond Crater, one of the roughly 200 vents along the Uinkaret Volcanic Field. It formed anywhere between 100K-600K years ago, and permanently sealed as it cooled.
The area experienced another volcanic event approximately 1000 years ago, however due to Diamond Crater's inability to vent, the lava routed itself 20km southeast, forming Little Springs (pic 2) in the Mount Trumbull Mesa.
Mineral collectors shelf
As a miniature enthusiast and mineral collector, this was the perfect project for me
Minamitorishima (Marcus) Island - 24°17'19.82"N 153°58'53.81"E
Found this almost perfect triangle hoping around the various islands and archipelagos in the area. There's an excellent spy plane shot from 1943 somewhere in google earth's history, but I've never been able to find the sweet spot and altitude to get it to appear again after the first time.
I had a little trouble figuring out the name but once I did I found it had a page on wikipedia with a few more pics. Which is where I found the third, taken during an attack on August 31, 1943, and the fourth, from 1975.
LPT The point of no return on tightening a knot in a plastic bag is much tighter than it seems
The tighter the knot the more time it might take, but chances are it can easily be untied by twisting the loose ends until they're stiff enough to slip back through. They can be tied and untied over and over again without showing any signs of wear and tear, keeping food fresh much longer than the occlupanids or twist ties food is often sold with.

The path light makes my rock planter look like an old man with crazy hair through my security camera.
I'm fairly agnostic about the whole staged/not staged thing. I wasn't there. I don't know nothing. I just want to address this particular point in the title, that David made in today's show.
This article is just one example of a terrorist act orchestrated by the FBI at a crowded event. There were only three or four agents that had any idea what was really going on. The device was supplied by the FBI and they were the only ones aware it was a fake until the story came out in the news.
This is obviously nothing more than an anecdote, and in no way informs what happened the other night. However, it is an example of a manufactured perpetrator being placed in the right location, at the right time, to unwittingly follow through on the FBI's agenda.
It illustrates that whether it CAN happen, is an entirely different matter than if it makes sense to any of us.
If this recent event was staged, who's to say it has anything to do with +rump's polling? He is an objectively stupid person. He does stupid things all the time that aren't any easier to understand than why he would do something like this. Maybe he thinks he's priming conditions to call off the midterms. He might have intended to use this as a route to get the ballroom construction going again, because it's "military stuff" need to be ready to go in time for another insurrection on January 6th, 2029.
I'm not saying I think either of these things are true, I'm just saying there's no reason to think polling has anything to do with "the plan", if there was one.
I know David thinks he's being reasonable, but unless he was in on it from the beginning, he wouldn't have any more insight than anyone else on the outside looking in.
