Porting proving difficult

I have a Montréal number but now live in MB.

When I first moved and got Internet, BellMTS got me with a good offer of internet plus phone plan for ~ $80.

So i ported my number from Lucky to Bell. The port didn't work and was told that the only way to keep my number was to get a new phone plan via Bell Canada at ~ $80/month.

I've now tried to port to PCMobile multiple times to an eSIM. It hasn't worked.

Has anyone gone through something similar?

I've changed plans to ~$60/month now but would ideally prefer sub $40 on a phone plan. Especially as I use almost no data.

In defence of Pulp & Paper

Strangely, I did not know much about Pulp & Paper until close to the end of Undergrad. I primarily wanted to work in environmental remediation, waste-to-energy, polution control. I chose chemical engineering because of the pollution in the waters & land from the exploitation of Petroleum in the crude oil rich Niger Delta in Nigeria.

Now, I've worked in 2 paper mills, and have at least 3 others from my class that also work at paper mills. I'm 4 years into the industry but feel like I need another 5/6 years to be quite competent.

Funny enough, there are somewhat endlss opportunities for chemical engineers in Pulp & Paper in N. America. It is somewhat of a guaranteed job, if one is willing to move.

One can leave a mill having gained practical experience with wastewater, water treatment, boiler operations, evaporation/crystallization, reaction kinetics, washing/mass transfer, overall industrial energy management. I struggle to think of other companies that could afford one the same learning baptism.

Process Engineer TN

I'm still in the interview process for a process Engineer position.

My degree is in chemical engineering. So should they ensure the letter states Chemical Engineer, not Process Engineer?

They said i likely would be coming in as the Senior Engineer. Would this help or hurt the application?

My wife is not a Canadian citizen yet so she likely wouldn't be able to work. Has anyone been in this situation?

Given the "at-will" work style of US employment, do y'all usually ask for a premium for US jobs?

I have eventually wanted to move to the USA, there are just much more options (professional, academic, etc) and mugg higher pay ceiling.

Woodstove worth it in MB Canada?

I live in Northern MB.

Currently renting but likely to buy the home I rent.

It's a small ~ 700 sq ft home with ~ 300 sq ft basement.

The heating is all electric and the insulation is quite shyt so this tiny place cost ~ 3000 in electricity this winter (cooking, oven also electric).

Furthermore, there were 3 electricity outages this past winter. All were swiftly resolved but still.

So, I am considering getting a wood stove/furnace to heat the basement/house and as a backup cooking (and heating) unit if there is a prolonged outage.

The stove itself may not be that expensive but the installation would likely start from $6000.

Is it worth it to consider this? I doubt there would be any incentives in MB for wood heating, all incentives are towards efficiency and heat pumps.

Buy okay home and save money vs buy good home later and pay (high) rent.

Hi guys,

I live in northern MB with my family and pay a very high rent ($1500) compared to the house value ($75k). We are currently a 1 income famil as my wife awaits her papers, and we have 1 child.

The house is available for sale at a price that I could easily afford now, while it would cut my housing costs by about half (mortgage plus insurance plus taxes = half of current rent).

The house isn't what we would like. It is okay, but we would likely spend its current value in additions (at least air exchange & humidity control, change insulation, install heat pump, add a garage and likely add an add-a-room, could even finish the basement, or turn the basement into the main parlour, buy an adjoining plot) over the next years to fully enjoy the home if staying in it for . Alternatively, we could max out RRSP contributions and use the HBP to move to a nice house in 2 to 3 years.

How do I frame this dilenma in a way that would convince my wife that we come out well ahead with buying the house now, making minimal changes first (air exchange, maybe heat pump), then either buying another home or making whole scale changes to this home.

There is a tax incentive if modifications increase the home's value by ~ 100k (basically no municipal tax for 3 years). Not sure if there are other benefits from such renovations as we will not be making a second accomodation/basement suite).

Buying a Home is more Serious than I envisaged

I rent a house (that is also kinda for sale). I live in a very housing starved rural city. So I jumped on this when it became available last year.

I have basically paid 10% of what the owner said he would sell it for (even adding rent consideration). Buying this home would cut my housing costs by half.

However, the house is not very nice and the necessary renovations would be too much money. Plus, I would lose all my first time home buyer options.

Again, due to the tight supply and forced price discovery, I am not sold on any of the existing homes. In any case, I knly have about 5% for the down-payment anyways as my tax return is taking so long.

Furthermore, most of my assumptions on the rules and perks were seemingly grossly overexaggerated.

I think I have to buy a home that we will like for many years and would require minimal large scale improvements.

I'm strongly leaning towards getting off the market, saving another $15k+ before rejoining the market. However, if this takes even 1 year, I would have paid close to half the value of my current home in rent alone.

Family Visitor Visa Status while waiting for PR Approvals.

My family (spouse and child) is visiting me while the family sponsorship application is being processed. They have done their medicals, which is usually the last stage before a passport request.

Going by the processing time at the time of applying, we should have received the PRs by now.

I'm concerned that, if the PR application continues to delay, and if they stay for 6 months and leave, they won't be allowed to return soon after.

I'm now considering applying for a visitor record but wonder how that affects everything.

I did some research and it seems my spouse could apply for the SOWP and simultaneously apply for a visitor record for our child.

Has anyone gone through this or similar?

CMT Online

Hi, Chem Eng grad here. Looking at doing the online. CMT program for a possible pivot to the Mining/Metals industry (from Pulp & Paper).

Any thoughts? Is the program considered highly? Anyone here who took this program as well?
